5 Star Review awsome TV at reasonable price

Strengths:

picture quality on up-converted DVD signal, HD signal from Cable/over air. Sleek design (for a DLP), light weight

Weaknesses:

sound quality

Posted Jun 5, 2007 - I have this tv for about one month now. Bought it from amazon.com towards end of April. --- My experience with the TV has been nothing but great. The TV picture quality from up-converted DVD signal, HD broadcast from cable service is mind blowing. It makes me want to stay in the living room and watch more TV program/ movies. The picture from the TV seems really "life like" and the charactors are like "popping out from screen". Picture quality on standard broadcast is acceptable. To me, they are just as goog as from my 10 years old CRT, but my buddies are staying the pictures for SD are blurry. In either case, i think this is expected since the stardard broadcast is 480p, and this set is 1080p. There are lot more "fixed" pixel on the screen. The sound quality is ok, comparing it with the previous version hls5087w, the quality is better, and this model comes with SRS (surround sound). Samsung is attempting to creat surround sound experience with only two speaker. My advise, not to expect much from the built in speakers. but if you are considering this HDTV, you should also consider investing in a decent set of HT system. Once you couple this TV with a decent set of HT system, you will really get to learn the meaning of "enriched experience" on watching movies or just TV shows. ---- on the technical side, this TV offers the first LED engine in the industry. LED engine used to replace the conventional lamp and color wheel. which translates into less mechanical moving parts (the color wheel), and the LED life cycle is rated at 20k hours, where the conventional lamp is rated at 6k. In another words, one should not have to replace the light source for the life of the TV. from my experience, the TV runs very quiet comparing to its previous version hls5087w, which gets some auditable noice from the color wheel spinning. ---- over all, i will recommand this TV to whom are looking for true HD experience, not intending to all mount the TV, but also want to save a few bucks on other home theater gear.

5 Star Review Great TV at a great price

Strengths:

absolutely great tv with great clarity; 1080p; first LED DLP; so weightless just 60 lbs compared to 90+ lbs for Plasma; DVDs play great very apt connection options with so easy setup

Weaknesses:

none so far; I am using with direct antenna connection and yet so better.

Posted Jun 8, 2007 - What a great tv, makes me wonder what I was doing w/o a 50" all this time. I was always considering many models of Panasonic like 600U and 50PH9UK for a long time, but never could get the price around 1500$. Memorial day and Buy.com brought this TV to my attention with LED DLP and 1080p (Full HD) with 2 yr additional full warranty at 1600$+. Amazing price, TV was at my doorstep in 2 days. HD Tuner within TV adds so much ease of use. Samsung products are so easy and intuitive to use and setup; they make it so simple.

5 Star Review Amazing Television

Strengths:

Color, Contrast Ratio, Amazing picture clarity, No bulbs, no color wheels

Weaknesses:

none so far!

Posted Dec 12, 2007 - I’ve purchased the Samsung HLT5087S 50" Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV a few weeks ago and I can only give is EXTREMELY high reviews. Picture: The TV provides for a full 1080P resolution. The picture clarity is amazing! I am now officially spoiled. I receive my HD signals over the air using a plain antenna. The decoder in this TV also picks up a few extra stations sometimes depending on the quality of your antenna. I also have standard analog cable. When I scanned the analog cable, I found that my cable company broadcasts the digital HD stations in between the normal analog stations. While the HD picture wins no contest, even the analog signals look cable stations look good. The LED light engine produces amazing colors and gets rid of the need for costly replacement bulbs and a noisy color wheel. I would suggest if you get the TV to go into the setup menu and turn off dynamic contrast mode. While it makes the colors bright, just like any TV that mode makes for bright but inaccurate colors. This isn’t the TV’s fault, all TV’s with this mode suffer from it. If you’re not ready to jump on either the HD-DVD/Blu Ray bandwagon, fear not. An upconverting DVD player still looks good on the 50” screen. As with any DLP TV, there is a view angle on the TV. From side to side the view angle is 70 degrees (140 degrees total) and top to bottom about 30 degrees (60 degrees total). I’ve seen many DLP TV’s with horrible view angles, but this TV isn’t bad at all. If you usually watch TV on the couch, you’ll be at the perfect level for viewing. I have my TV in the corner of the room so it’s impossible to go past the side to side view angle limits. Even at the extreme side to side views, the picture dims a bit but isn’t bad. My family also has a 50” Samsung plasma TV and I have to argue that the picture quality (colors, contrast ratio, etc.) are very comparable. Another positive of DLP technology is there is absolutely NO motion blur. Typical response times for LCD’s are about 10-15ms on average. For a DLP, using mirrors its response time is negligible. DLP does not suffer from burn in so if you like to play video games or use it as a computer monitor, this TV is for you! Inputs: I’ll just list the inputs: Coax Air Antenna and Coax Cable Antenna 3 HDMI Inputs RS232 input (Serial connection) Digital Optical Out 2 S-video In 3 Composite In 2 Component In VGA PC in USB 2.0 Is that enough for you? I have used the TV as a computer monitor using the VGA connection and it looks BEAUTIFUL. HDMI works flawlessly and composite and component both work great. A neat feature for the TV is you can plug your USB drive into the back of the TV and view pictures directly from the thumb drive. If there is an MP3 music file in the same folder as the pictures, you can play music while you view pictures. Great for showing off your last vacation or family get together. The USB drive can also be used later on to update your TV’s firmware as they are released. Sound I’ll admit, reading other reviews of this TV I was a bit wary of the sound quality since the speakers are inside the TV and not visible from the outside. However I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. Obviously you can’t beat using a home theater, but the sound is very clear and not muffled. The sound is still very good. Navigation The menus are very intuitive and navigate. Even if you have a little experience and some basic understanding of TV’s you’ll have no problem setting up the TV. The menu’s are broken down into the following categories Picture Sound Channel Setup Input Application Menu Map Most likely you’ll only have to mess around with the first five. Overall, I can’t give higher praises for this TV. The picture is amazing, the LED light engine produces amazing colors and gets rid of burned out projector bulbs and noisy color wheels. The inputs leave you plenty of room to expand in the future. While the sound will not replace a home theater, it is by no means bad in any way. The menus are intuitive and simple. The cost to size value is amazing. I got a 50” amazing HD tv for $1500. Don’t pass up this TV. You won’t be disappointed!

5 Star Review Samsung 50" DLP High Definition Television HL-T5087S

Strengths:

Gorgeous picture...I'm so impressed. Quite skinny for DLP at 11" deep. This is the new LED technology--no bulb replacement after one year of use. This DLP is great value versus plasma.

Weaknesses:

Location of the remote sensor limits placement of the center surround speaker. Sound on the TV is ok, but a surround system is essential to fully enjoy the HD experience.

Posted Dec 11, 2007 - I highly recommend this television. I have admired the Samsung plasma TV's for years but could not afford such an expense! After hearing of their new skinny DLP version I had to check it out. I viewed this TV alongside my other two favorites: Samsung plasma & Pioneer Elite plasma. I could not tell the difference. I paid about $1500 for this TV, which beats paying $3500 or more anyday. I'm very pleased with this purchase & had plenty left in the budget for a new AV receiver, surround speakers & DVD player. This unit will not hang on a wall, so that may give some buyers pause. I never intended to do that, so it worked out wonderfully for my situation. Again, I highly recommend this TV and hope this review will help you.

4 Star Review Samsung HL-T5087S 50" DLP Projection TV

Strengths:

no bulb, bright, good preset-picture settings

Weaknesses:

brightness can fade if youre not sitting directly in front of it

Posted Nov 6, 2007 - this has been a great unit so far. the picture is very bright, when youre sitting right in front of it. the brightness levels falls off pretty fast once you get more than 2 or 3 feet off to the side (from about 10 feet away), but, even then, you can still see the picture. it just is not as bright as head-on. the sound is fine for a tv. dont expect a sound that you would get from a dedicated sound system though, as so many seem to think it should have.

5 Star Review Samsung HL-t5087s

Strengths:

Great blacks. No rainbows for me. slick design fits in decor without being obtrusive.

Weaknesses:

None noticed yet

Posted Jun 3, 2007 - Did extensive research and compared to Sony DLP equivalent. Did not consider Plasma or LCD since specific place to put the TV in my house only teh DLP fits correctly. Picture is a clear improvement over my previous TV - Samsung HLM507W (DLP with native resolution of 1280 x 720). I never saw rainbows so neither is deficient in my eye sbut claims are that the new LED has fewer to no rainbows.

4 Star Review It's Nice!

Strengths:

Light-weight, good sharp picture

Weaknesses:

Bowing, screen-door effect for non-HDTV programs, had to overright color settings

Posted Dec 9, 2007 - I first used this TV with Comcast non-HDTV (for 1 month). I (not other family members) suffered from an unusual effect. The effect was acute in images with sharp contrasts. Thus, in close-up mode, the eyes would float around the face! Very disconcerting. After 1 month, I moved from Comcast non-HDTV cable to Dishnetwork with HDTV and this issue has gone, even when watching non-HDTV programs. The out of the box, and the (reset) default color setting was too blue and dark (family and friends observed this too). I have had to change some settings. There are a number of settings and it became an exercise in permutations. The setting that had the most effect for me was Color Gamut, which I set to sRGB. Like most others, I too see the bowing issue. Does not bother me much though. The HDTV clearly brings out the vibrant colors! The HDTV pictures are also nice and sharp, making this TV worth it. The sound is OK. The remote buttons functionality is easy and intuitive. The TV turn-on time is fast. Even though it is a rear projection TV, it is pretty thin. One of the nice features I have come to use often is to show slideshow of photos by connecting my USB memory stick to TV. Although, it (wiselink) seems little slow in recognizing and navigating the folders in the USB, the photo slideshow brings the family and friends together. And the HDTV does justice to the high resolution pictures!

5 Star Review Samsung HL-T5087S DLP TV - Awesome 50" DLP TV

Strengths:

Full 1080p resolution, very slim design compared to other DLPs on the market, lots of connections, LED bulbs

Weaknesses:

Speakers

Posted Feb 27, 2008 - I've purchased several Samsung TVs and each one doesn't fail to exceed my expectations. This TV is great bargain for such a large screen and it also has the new LED bulb technology, which saves the headache of changing out the bulb every couple of years on conventional DLPs. The LED bulbs will almost never burn out and will most likely outlive the life of the TV. The LED bulbs also consume less power than the regular bulb DLPs, which will save you money on your electricity bill as well! This is one of the best DLP TVs out on the market! Has awesome 1080p picture. The picture is bright and crisp. Thin design at only 12.8" deep, so you can fit it in tight spaces unlike other DLPs. Plenty of connections that make hooking up different units very easy (i.e. DVD player, set-top box, gaming console). This also supports PC input so that you can use it as a computer monitor if you'd like! The only grudge I have with this TV are the speakers, they are actually not very good at all. The sound is distorted when you turn the volume up too high when watching movies. If you are a movie watcher, I'd definitely recommend setting this TV up with a home theater system for better sound. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. For the quality of the picture and the size of the screen, you won't find a better deal.

4 Star Review Excellent television

Strengths:

good quality output after adjustment, slim depth, no unnecessary "frame" around the edge of the screen which keeps it from taking up more space than necessary. Audio is satisfactory.

Weaknesses:

takes a few seconds to find a signal after turning it on, image quality on standard definition signals is adequate but could be better

Posted Feb 17, 2008 - We enjoy the television tremendously. We are satisfied with the internal speakers, the output is satisfactory, and we like the efficient size. It produces less heat than the plasma it replaced and uses less energy which is one thing we appreciate about this television. The best feature is supposed to be the LED-based light-engine which is used in place of the standard bulb found on most rear-projections. It is unknown to us whether or not the LED-based bulb will actually last the life of the television, but if that is true, then it makes this television even more appealing by saving us the several hundred dollar cost associated with replacement bulbs.

5 Star Review Samsung HLT5087SAX 50" Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV

Strengths:

awesome picture, easy to set it up. Very recommneded!!

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Feb 3, 2008 - I've had my set for three days, and it has proven to be a very nice upgrade from my over-a-decade old 27" CRT. I had, at one point, considered getting a Sony SXRD, but decided on the Samsung for four main reasons: Price, standard definition performance (since we'll have to deal with SD sources for some time; the SXRD does quite poorly on SD sources, judging from a friend's set), the PC interface (SXRD doesn't support the full 1920x1080 resolution when taking input from a computer), and of course, the long life LED. The TV is beautiful, both in picture and cabinet. The thin bezel makes it look "all picture," compared to flat panels with their thick frames. Depth of the set is not a concern for me, since I will not wall mount the set. The transparent menus are attractive and fairly intuitive, though they could be more responsive. HD broadcasts received over a simple, cheap, indoor antenna look great. Other than the PC input (hooked up to one of the three HDMI ports with a DVI-HDMI cable; an RGB port is also included), it may be a long time before I ever feed it a 1080p source, as I'm not willing to jump on HD DVD or Blu Ray at their current prices and unclear future, but the content I have viewed (SD/HD broadcasts, Nintendo Wii, DVD) look fantastic.
