While inheriting the basic functions and design philosophy of the current PlayStation 2 (SCPH-50000), the internal design architecture of the redesigned PlayStation2 computer entertainment system (SCPH-70000 CB) model has been completely overhauled, resulting in a slimmer and more lightweight form. Internal volume has been reduced by 75 percent, overall weight has been halved, and thickness trimmed down to 2.8 cm (thickness of current model is 7.8cm). Its size is almost as small as a hardcover book, making it easier to carry around. Equipped with an integrated Ethernet port for network gaming, the PlayStation 2 fuses design and functionality. Approximately 40 percent of North American PlayStation 2 online gamers use dial-up connections and to satisfy this base, the North American model is equipped with both Ethernet and modem ports. minimize

5 Star Review Slimmer is Better

Strengths:

+ smaller + built in network adapter + less noisy + much cooler than original

Weaknesses:

- heats up quickly - not compatiable with Sony's PS2 hard-drive - some 3rd party stuff won't work with this

Posted Jul 30, 2005 - The new slim PS2 is a must buy for those that don't already own a PS2. This new slimmer version of the PS2 is space efficient and is much quieter than it's predecessor. It also comes with a built in network adapter for online play. My only complaint with the slim PS2 is that my 3rd party multi tap was not compatible with it. In conclusion those looking to buy a new PS2, or upgrade their old clunky PS2, will be very satisfied with the new slim version.

5 Star Review Sony Slim Playstation 2 Console with Controller

Strengths:

Sleek Design, Ultra Quiet, Compact and good price. Has all the features of the larger Playstaion 2 (backwards compatibility with Playstation One Games, Built-in DVD player) at half the size.

Weaknesses:

None (except the lack of support for HDD (hard drive)which only a couple games support and for the majority of gameplayers this is a non-issue.)

Posted Aug 2, 2005 - I like this model better than the bulky model that was released orginally. For those with a limited amount of space this model is ideal and is slightly larger than a DVD case. I noticed an improvement in this model in that it is VERY quiet. There is a built-in fan but you can barely hear it. I noticed slightly faster load times as well (though not as such a big difference that is very noticable). In addition, due to better parts installed in this system (such as lasers) the chance of getting a DRE (dics read error) is reduced signifigantly. Overall, I highly recommend this model--it looks very cool, saves space, is very quiet and can perform all the functions the larger model can do at half the size.

5 Star Review Slim = The Win!

Strengths:

Size, Built-in network adapter. The size of this product is the big plus. Can sit horizontillay or vertically, and will probably be the most inconspicuous thing in your entertainment center.

Weaknesses:

None unless you want a built in Hard drive. If you want to play FFXI you might have to use the older models which allow Hard Drives. This is one game though. Who cares?

Posted Oct 24, 2005 - Great console at a great price. By far the largest library of games, plus the PS1 library, there are so many must-have titles. This model is a lot smaller then the previous versions. It has to be seen in real life. It is slightly larger than a DVD case. I have a GC, PS2, X-Box, and a PC. They are all great in their own way. If I'd have to choose a console it would be PS2 solely on the library. If you have an older PS2, it might even be worth it to trade it in and get this model.

5 Star Review PS2 Slim

Strengths:

Smaller, quieter, built-in network port and IR receiver

Weaknesses:

No support for hard drive, new multi-tap required, external power adapter

Posted Jan 16, 2006 - This is a great improvement over the previous version in terms of size and design. It really is the size of a DVD case and that makes it much more portable (I take it on long business trips). Much of the reduction of size and noise is from removing the dc transformer outide the unit - it now has a power brick. I wouldn't rush out and buy one if you have a working PS2 unless you want it for traveling because I haven't noticed and changes in perfromance, etc. A couple of disadvantages are that the hard drive is not compatable with this unit and the old multitap doesn't work anymore because the arrangement of the controller and memory card have changed.

5 Star Review Slim Ps2

Strengths:

Looks cool ,dosnt need a network adapter, Small.

Weaknesses:

Sometimes owerheats.

Posted Nov 4, 2005 - This new PS2 is the best. Its way smaler then any other console thats made for home use. It plays DvDs ,CDs and PS2 games. Nislly desighned and I like that it has a ir resiver built in so you dont need to take up a controller port to use the DvD remote. I found that sometimes after a week of being on it overheats. Overall its the best.

5 Star Review Slimline Playstation2

Strengths:

Very small size, reduced price, amount of games

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Dec 20, 2005 - This is the second Playstation2 that I have bought. The first one was the original version, it lasted 5 years before my kid dropped it and the laser stopped working. This new slimline version is remarkably small, it's the size of a small hardcover book. I could not believe the size difference between the first one. It plays all the games the original one did so there was no compatibility issues. At $150 retail this console cannot be beat and has lasted the test of time. The games available to this platform far exceeds the competition.

5 Star Review A Must Buy

Strengths:

Cool slim design, good price, built-in DVD player

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Dec 29, 2005 - With the cool slim design and low price, I can not resist it. This slim PS2 system is the first vedio game system I have purchased. I am totally satisfied with it. It is fast and quiet. It also has a built-in DVD player. I hope that the DVD player remote control was included. It does not have built-in hard drive, but I do not need it. It is a must buy for yourself or as a gift. Highly recommended.

4 Star Review Slim Playstation 2 Console with Controller (PS2)

Strengths:

Light, compact size, optional vertical stand, quiet, onboard network adapter adapter

Weaknesses:

none encountered yet

Posted Mar 30, 2006 - A stylish lightweight compact unit capable of horizontal or vertical position with optional stand, makes it very space efficient for those with limited space. It is quiet and backward compatible with PS1 games. Its DVD player plays PS games, DVDs or CDs, and online play is possible with its network adapter.

5 Star Review The old PS2 in much smaller space

Strengths:

very slim, small and nice looking

Weaknesses:

no hard drive, gets hot fat

Posted Sep 18, 2005 - This unit looks great and fun to play game with. The main problem is that it gets hot fat. Also I had a third party controller which seems not working with this new unit.
