3 Star Review Like no other Music/Dance game

Strengths:

Quirky characters and somewhat of a story (at least it tried)

Weaknesses:

Lots of memorization and there's just not a lot of depth.

Posted Dec 30, 2005 - Just because Unison is labelled as a music/dance game, don't expect it to be like the other games in the genre. Unison is all about memorization of the choreography and thus makes the game quite hard for those who have weak short term memory. In each level, you're shown the whole dance choreography and then you're given a chance to practice it. Unlike other games where they feed you short sequences, Unison requires you to remember everything in one sitting. Once you have it down, you have to perform it to a "crowd." It makes the game a bit more realistic but then that isn't the point of playing video games. Other weaknesses are that the choreography is quite simple - it only requires you to push the analog sticks in one of the four directions. Supposedly the Japanese version had gamers doing arcs and circles with the analog sticks. The collection of songs is also kind of odd - you have dance mixes like Barbie Girl and then O.P.P. and Country Grammar?

Strengths:

Unique dancing game, good music that isn't in other games, Japanese humor.

Weaknesses:

Gameplay is not addictive

Posted May 25, 2005 - Unison is a dancing music video game, using the analog sticks to control your dancers through a routine set to music. On the one hand, Unison is amazing and sure to make you smile. The characters and plot are silly and funny. If you're a fan of Japanese humor, you won't want to miss this. The game also has a lot of charm. How can you not like a dancing game with tracks like "YMCA" or "We Are Family"? That said, the actual dance engine is not as fun as some others. Like Parappa or Bust A Groove, you repeat sequences to make your characters get through their routine. Unlike those games, which would give you a little segment, which you repeat, followed by another segment, which you repeat, Unison makes you learn the *whole* dance and then repeat it. It's a much more difficult test, and more a test of memorization than of reflexes. Fortunately, you still get cues during the dance (although if you're masochistic, you can turn them off). You still have to remember things in order, though, or your score suffers. It's not terribly hard, and it rewards persistance, but it's not as fun as other music games like Bust A Groove. Unison is fun for awhile, but it's easy to tire of it. The focus on memorization, on having to do a routine and repeat it until you get it right, can be boring. This is not a game that you'll pick up and breeze through, especially if you haven't played it in awhile. There's also not as much replay value here as in other games. While it's fun to dance to "We Are Family", I wouldn't put in the game just to hear the music. I like to replay Parappa or Bust A Groove or other music games just to hear the music. Since the music in Unison is already familiar and you're likely to hear it again soon, it's less of a draw to the game. If you like music or dancing games, you'll probably like this, though it's not something you'll pick up for a quick dance. Add stars if you like anime or Japanese humor. Stay away if you're thoroughly hopeless at Simon or have no short term memory.

Strengths:

Decent music, innovative gameplay.

Weaknesses:

Too much focus on memorization. Once you finish it once, you won't play again.

Posted Apr 27, 2005 - This is an interesting music game that you play with both analog sticks. You learn a routine, that is to say, what direction to push the sticks and when in a song, and then perform that song. You may have to go through the learning process a few times before you're ready to perform, but if you do well enough in the performance, you move on to the next stage. There's a stupid plot going on in between stages that I recommend skipping. This game is more from the Parappa school than the Bemani school of music games, meaning that it progresses with a story and each stage is one song. That of course means that, once you've played it once (which will take all of maybe 2 hours), you're done. There are higher difficulty levels, but you probably won't be too motivated to play them, due to the game's focus on memorizing the song before you play it for real. This game only comes recommended to hardcore music fans looking for something different. Casual fans will probably be happier with DDR and Amplitude.

Strengths:

Fun party game, good music score, Cool animation, addicting gameplay.

Weaknesses:

Not much depth into this game, kinda of a Dance Dance revolution knock off which doesn't stack up.

Posted Apr 25, 2005 - Titled: Unison: Rebels of Rhythm/dance, it's at best a dance type gameplay game simular to Dance Dance revlution, but not quite. I was exdpecting less from this game, but at most it's a decent game, not bad, but not good either. Pros: FUN gameplay! with tons of friend or at a party this could be quite entertaning. Music soundtrack is pretty good, but not so when compared to Dance Dance Revolution. It feature anime type character graphic, so thats kinda cool. Cons: Looks kinda cheap at most parts, budget game during devolopment, There isn't much depth, beside from the regular mode & a few others, there isn't very many. Overall: *** 3 Outta 5 STARS *** A decent attempt in to this genre by Tecmo.
