5 Star Review Metal Gear Collection

Strengths:

- 3 Great games in one package

Weaknesses:

-Not really. Maybe that Metal Gear Solid one is still on a PS1 disc instead of a PS2.

Posted Apr 22, 2008 - Really can't beat this deal - 3 Metal Gear games for $30 MSRP. Considering Metal Gear 1 still goes for a premium price , you might as well pick up this collection for less than MGS1 will run you. You get: Metal Gear Solid 1 Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance & Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence Metal Gear Solid defines stealth action. Even though the graphics are a bit antiquated by today's standards, the gameplay is still intense. Waiting in the shadows to sneak behind your enemy never gets old. Metal Gear 2 Substance (as well as Subsistence) is the later release after the initial MGS2 was put out. This adds new VR missions as well as some alternate gameplay modes. Metal Gear 3 is more of the same. Another addition release with bonus material. This even comes with the original old school NES version of Metal Gear. Definitely worth playing. All in all, these are great games, and absolutely NO reason not to own them all with this collection being out there.

5 Star Review Metal gear collection

Strengths:

Includes 3 games at a nice price. Includes special box cover art

Weaknesses:

Could have included a more robust tin packaging

Posted 1 year ago - This collection of metal gear games is a must have for any player that ever played or plans to play Metal gear games. But before buying these, there are some special points to keep in mind. 1) If you have a PS2, all the games will play fine but for games saves on Metal gear 1(a PS1 game) you will need PS1 memory card. 2) If you have a PS3 with complete backwards compatiblity (read 60 GB version), all the games will play fine & you do not need any additional memory cards 3) For non backwards compatible PS3, these games are as good as a coaster i.e. they will not play For a collection of games this big, they could have come up with a better packaging. I would have gladly paid extra 10 bucks if they had provided a nice tin packaging for this & maybe a mini poster!! Still, the fact that they provided these 3 evergreen games at such a nominal prices deserves a special "Thank You"

5 Star Review Get to know the full story before the final act

Strengths:

Great value for the money

Weaknesses:

Convoluted story

Posted May 5, 2008 - Never played the MGS series when it initially came out on the NIntendo and Sony systems, but amazing footage of MGS4 made me want to play these games before the PS3 sequel is released next month. Having a lot of fun playing through. For fans of the series, there is nothing new here. But for some new to MGS looking to see what the hype is all about, this is the one to buy. You get all the MGS goodies released over the years, all in one package, priced reasonably. The graphics obviously don't match up to the latest next-gen games, but the gameplay is still there to be enjoyed.

5 Star Review An Amazing Bundle

Strengths:

Low Price, 3 of the Best PS/PS2 Games

Weaknesses:

None

Posted 1 year ago - This collection is the one to get if you are just getting into MGS. The price can't be beat, and the definitive versions of each MGS game are included. Each game has its pros and cons, but the overall story, presentation, and gameplay are fantastic and will keep you entertained for hours. Highly recommended.

5 Star Review Relive or Experience the best tactical steal games on PS1/PS2!

Strengths:

Three fantastic games that are well-worth the $30 price tag; the best tactical/stealth games on PS1/PS2 in one package

Weaknesses:

Bonus disc of MGS3: Subsistence is absent...

Posted 1 year ago - You know a system is near the end of its lifespan when bundled games are released - Hitman Trilogy, the Resident Evil compilation, a few others, and now Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collecton. With Metal Gear Solid 4's release on the Playstation 3, it was an obvious choice to release the trilogy so that those unlucky to have missed out on the first three games could have the chance to better understand the story. Included in this release are: Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty/Substance, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater/Subsistence. These games have defined the stealth combat genre starting with Metal Gear Solid, originally released on the Playstation. Many of the characters present in the Metal Gear Solid story are introduced here and this title laid the groundwork for the three other games. MGS2 advances the story a few years in the future, playing as a character that might surprise players who were used to the gameplay from MGS1... MGS3 takes the story back to the roots of MGS, detailing the background of who's who in the world, completing a view of the key characters and events that culminate in MGS4. If you have beaten/plan to play MGS4, PICK THIS UP. It's the definitive collection and the only thing that would have made this title more complete would be the second disc released in the standalone edition of MGS3: Subsistence, a disc that contained bonus games Metal Gear 1 & 2 and a now-defunct online mode. I definitely recommend this title!

5 Star Review Three Metal Gear Solid games in one

Strengths:

Three Metal Gear Solid games in one set.

Weaknesses:

No second disc for Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. If only the Metal Gear Solid 1 in the set is a port of GameCube's Twin Snakes version...

Posted 1 year ago - With the hype of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots getting near of being released, Konami has another trick up their sleeves for Metal Gear Solid fans and would be players. They put the previous three Metal Gear Solid games into one set and selling it for a fairly good price, considering the Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance alone is fairly expensive. Metal Gear Solid 1 in the collection is the basically the Metal Gear Solid from Playstation 1, no known changes. Metal Gear Solid 2 in the collection is the Substance version that includes the VR missions, Snake missions, and the skateboard thing rather than just Sons of Liberty. Metal Gear Solid 3 in the collection is the Subsistence version that includes new camera view, theater mode, and downloading of camouflage. Though disc two from the original Subsistence version is not included. Second disc of the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is not included in the collection. That might be a big deal for some, but it might not be for others. The second disc have the Metal Gear 1 and 2 from NES, Snake versus Monkey, and online mode, though the online service is closed for every region as of late 2007. Konami would have made the collection better if they port the GameCube's Twin Snakes and put it as Metal Gear Solid 1 in the collection instead of the Playstation 1 version. That way, players can enjoy the similar type of graphic and gameplay throughout all three games. Not sure the reason why they did not try to port it to Playstation 2. Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection is a great deal for three games in one set. Even though the first game is still the same as the Playstation 1 and do require Playstation 1 memory card to save it, it did not make the collection less valuable. Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection should be Konami's answer to the Metal Gear Solid: 20th Anniversary set for American fans/players.

5 Star Review Metal Gear Solid: The Essential collection

Strengths:

A mighty collection for a great price.

Weaknesses:

Missing some games.

Posted 1 year ago - Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection is a great collection of the popular Metal Gear Solid games in one affordable package. It includes Metal Gear Solid 1 for the Playstation, Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance for the PS2 and the disc 1 of Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence for the PS2. Unfortunately, disc 2 of MGS 3 Subsistence is not included in this collection. That means Metal Gear 1 and 2 are not available in this collection. Another point to note is that Metal Gear Solid 1 is a Playstation One game, which means you'll need a Playstation memory card in order to play it on a PS2. You don't need the memory card if you have a PS3 though. Despite the missing Metal Gear 1 and 2 games, the essential collection is still an excellent buy. At $30, you get all 3 highly rated games and hours and hours of gameplay. Highly recommended!

5 Star Review Perfect MGS collection for fans and newbies alike

Strengths:

The first three Metal Gear Solid games for only $30, that's a great value.

Weaknesses:

Disc 2 from MGS3 Subsistence is not included, which means Metal Gear 1 and 2 are not included. MGS1 is still a PSOne disc and needs a PSOne memory card if played on a PS2

Posted 1 year ago - As the proud owner of a PS3, I looked forward to playing Metal Gear Solid 4 even though I'd never played the first 3. The Essential Collection provided me an awesome opportunity to pick up all three together, new, for only $30. That sure beats trying to find used copies of them all, especially considering what that would cost and that the discs might be in bad shape. All three games are absolutely incredible and I can not recommend them enough. I strongly recommend that every PS2/PS3 owner go pick this up now before its long gone.

5 Star Review Excellent Collection for a Great Price

Strengths:

* Provides the first three Metal Gear Solids in a convenient and affordable package

Weaknesses:

* The included version of MGS3: Subsistence lacks the second disk, meaning that you can't play the classic Metal Gear games or view any other of the bonus features * Nothing new is really added.

Posted 1 year ago - Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection is a fantastic compilation of the series pre-MGS4. Given that a copy of any of the games in the series will run you at least $20 these days on eBay, this is great way for someone new to the series to get their feet wet. These games are classics and honestly must be played by all Playstation owners. The biggest downside of this collection is that it doesn't really add anything to the package, so unless you're going to sell your old copies on eBay, players who already own all three titles will find little reason to buy this collection. In fact, because MGS3 no longer has the bonus disc, there's really no reason to buy the collection.

All three Metal Gear Solid games included in one awesome collection!

Weaknesses:

None

Posted 1 year ago - Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection is a must have for all fans of stealth action video games. This combination of three great games of the MGS saga is a good start for those wanting to play MGS4 who haven't played any of the previous games. 5 Star Review A+

Strengths:

Great games, great story

Weaknesses:

Graphics, need psone memory card if playing on PS2

Posted 1 year ago - This is a fantastic deal for the amount of games you get with this bundle. Three of the finest games ever made. Of course, they are graphically dated by now (and don't included progressive scan 480p mode, etc), but still stand the test of time. I still prefer the GameCube version of Metal Gear Solid, but that's me. A very good buy regardless.

5 Star Review Fantastic package!

Strengths:

+all 3 MGS games! +covert ops missions +highly intelligent bosses

Weaknesses:

-the games end at some point... -poor camera angles.

Posted 1 year ago - This is a really high quality package including the original MGS, MGS2 and MGS3. These games would eventually set the stage for, quite possibly, one of the best games I've ever played, MGS4 recently released for PS3. MGS1 set the stage for this amazing quartet of games with it's intriguing bosses, the showdown between Liquid and Solid, and it's groundbreaking technology never seen on PS1. MGS2 took the series into the "next generation" of its time. The one con of this game was playing 3/4 of the game as pretty boy Raiden. However, I personally enjoyed playing as him...however most did not. MGS3 was a return to playing as the Snake characters, and the fans rejoiced! This game also has the best boss battle of any game, IMO. (The End!) I highly recommend you get this game!

5 Star Review Three classics in one affordable collection. Catch up to MGS4 quickly!

Strengths:

Three classics in their own right. MGS is unchanged but has a spiffy dvd case. The other two games are the superior Director's Cut versions: MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence.

Weaknesses:

Metal Gear Solid is in PSone format, requires PSone memory card. Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence only includes Disc 1 of the original package.

Posted 1 year ago - Metal Gear Solid holds up extremely well. It's a classic because it was one of the first (if not the first) 3D action games that emphasized stealthy tactics over brute force. The version in this collection is the PSone version, but as I said before, it comes in a PS2 dvd case. You will need a PSone memory card to save even if you're playing it on a PS2. If you're playing on a PS3, you can obviously save to the hard drive. Just keep that in mind if you have just a PS2, since PSone memory cards can be hard to come by nowadays. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is a small, small step below Metal Gear Solid because of the very convoluted plot, as well as the fact that you have to play most of the game as newbie Raiden instead of badass Snake. However, the game mechanics and visuals are among the best for PS2. The extra features in Substance include a bunch of extra VR missions, boss battles, and new difficulty mode. The only disappointing part of this collection is the third game, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. It contains only the first disc of the separate retail version of MGS3: Subsistence. The second disc had tons of special bonus content, including ports of the MSX games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the online mode (now dead), and a boss mode where you can fight any boss from MGS3 you want. Still, MGS3 is a very solid game with the new camouflage and survival system where you wear body paint and eat animals in order to survive in the jungle. Story buffs will be pleased with the setting, a Cold-War jungle setting that tells you about the life of Big Boss, who is Solid Snake's genetic father. In short, I would recommend for anybody who owns a PS2/PS3 and is into action games. I would ESPECIALLY recommend this for anyone who is planning on buying, or already has, Metal Gear Solid 4, as the games in this collection will allow you to get up to speed on the plot up to Metal Gear Solid 4. The MSRP for this collection is $30, meaning you are paying $10 a pop for these three classic games, well worth that money in my opinion. P.S. the completionists out there will want to hunt down the stand-alone Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence game for the missing second disc.

5 Star Review Metal Gear Solid review

Strengths:

3 Great classic games at a low price!

Weaknesses:

You still need a PS1 memory card for Metal Gear Solid 1.

Posted 1 year ago - In this boxset are Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3, all for $30 MSRP. Metal Gear Solid 1 is still a Playstation 1 game, there's no Playstation 2 remake, or even the game cube version, which would be the only down side to this collection. These three games are all excellent games, combining great stealth action with very fun boss fights.

5 Star Review Great Value!

Strengths:

3 games in 1!

Weaknesses:

None that I can think of.

Posted May 30, 2008 - For a MSRP of $30, you get three great games in one package. This series is known for innovative gameplay, great story, and awesome graphics. It's a sneaking type of game, though if you'd like you can go in Rambo style if you wish. Overall, I highly recommend this to anyone.
