This installment in the critically-acclaimed Virtua Fighter series packs a serious punch fueled by the power of the PLAYSTATION 3. Virtua Fighter 5 has an all-star cast of 17 fighters, including characters from the previous iterations along with two new characters named El Blaze and Eileen. El Blaze is a Mexican fighting champion that defeats unsuspecting opponents with his lightning-quick Lucha Libre fighting style and Eileen uses a Monkey Kung Fu fighting style which she learned from her grandfather, a former Kung Fu master. Choose from an array of costumes and attachable items and then step into the ring and prove that you're the best. minimize

5 Star Review Virtua Fighter 5

Strengths:

Phenomenal graphics and great gameplay

Weaknesses:

No online play

Posted Mar 26, 2007 - This is one of the best fighting games I have ever played. The graphics are superb and the gameplay is very deep. The game includes the standard arcade and versus modes as well as dojo (practice) modes and quest modes. I believe the quest mode would have to be my favorite as you travel to other "arcades" to play against simulated "real-life" opponents. The AI for these characters is based off of real arcade players. Sadly, the game lacks online play which is it's only drawback.

5 Star Review One of the few great games for the PS3 (~5 months after US launch).

Strengths:

Makes some good use of PS3's graphics abilities; unbelievable amount of moves and combos available for each player.

Weaknesses:

Doesn't seem to use the *full* potential of the PS3's graphics; some long load times; some control mapping could be improved.

Posted Mar 9, 2007 - Okay, I was hoping this game would be one of the VERY few on the PS3 (as of this writing in March 2007) to live up to expectations, and I can say without hesitation that it is does accomplish that. But it's not perfect. Styles... The good: the characters have move lists that are extremelt extensive. The bad: it's almost daunting to the casual player -- there's a learning curve here that exceeds any other fighting game I've played. And some of the combos, especially those that require you to make "continuous motions" (like half-circles) using the d-pad are clunky. It results in some button-mashing at times... But with some many combos, even the button-mashing produces very interesting moves/combos rather often. Graphics... The good: character animations are great, collision detection feels right, camera generally is well-behaved. The bad: some of the effects (the first one that comes to mind is the snow on the ground in one of the arenas) feel cobbled together and definitely not using the of the PS3's capabilities (maybe that would have been more forgivable in a launch title, but not a late-feb. release). System performance. The awkward: load times seems to be on the excessively long side, and that's after an initial installation that takes a good 10-15 minutes (and I have a 7200RPM HDD dropped into my PS3). With two-win matches enabled, it feels like you spend more time on the load screens than playing. And the intermittent games saving also seems to take longer than they should (a save file that's approx. 2.7MB and a disk cache of 8MB should result in almost zero delay for the player, but that's not the case). It even make me think there might be something wrong with my aftermarket HDD, but the other games I own (Resistance, FA2) load and save at reasonable paces, so I'm pretty sure it's VF5. Anyway, reading the review over I've really accentuated the minor annoyances, but overall the game is great -- especially if you're familiar with previous versions or have the patience to spend some time practicing long. long lists of moves. From start to end, this might be my favorite PS3 title... And if you like fighting games at all and own a PS3, this is one to definitely add to your collection, minor annoyances notwithstanding.

5 Star Review Most Beautiful Console Game Ever?

Strengths:

Extremely deep fighting game

Weaknesses:

Very steep learning curve.

Posted Feb 25, 2007 - After owning this game on my PS3 for a week, I can honestly say the PS3 is starting to live up to its potential. Sure, I've owned my PS3 for months, but so far only used it as a Blu-Ray player and owned one PS2 game "God of War". The guys at Sega's AM2 division have done it again. This game has seemingly infinite number of moves, and while others might pick nits at the lack of features like no online play (there are no other fighters that offer this) or on-line leaderboad (this they should have offered), I would say forget about it, go buy this and have a good time. In a few months hopefully people will come back to this review and wonder what the big fuss was all about, because of all the amazing games out on the PS3. But right now, VF5 is probably one of the, if not the amazing game ever made.

5 Star Review Virtua Fighter 5 Review

Strengths:

Deep Gameplay

Weaknesses:

Can be challenging for new comers

Posted Apr 23, 2008 - Virtua Fighter 5 is the 5th game in the legendary Virtua Fighter series. You will be hard pressed to find a deeper fighting system then this one, and that can be both good and bad. Good because it will keep you occupied for a long time, bad because it will be tough for people new to the series at first. The game looks great and has a good single player mode. Overall I recommend Virtua Fighter 5 to any fighting game fan out there.

4 Star Review VF 5 brings beatdown on the PS3!

Strengths:

many characters to choose from, unlockable items, costumes

Weaknesses:

no online play mode, lack of story

Posted Apr 29, 2008 - The Virtua Fighter series came from a long way back from the early Sega Genesis days. The gameplay remains with 3 simple buttons of course, punch, block and kick. There are 2 new characters in this once since Virtua Figher Evolution which included Eilieen and El Blaze. The quest mode is very close to the one found in VF 4 where characters gain money and items to costumize. There is even replay mode where arcade matches are found. Fans of VF or even not will be pleased.

3 Star Review Good, but needs online play

Strengths:

Very solid fighting system, good variety of characters, quest mode adds replayability

Weaknesses:

Fighting system not beginner friendly, the computer AI is not very challenging, lack of online play.

Posted Apr 6, 2008 - Virtua fighter 5 gives a nice leap in graphics from the previous games. Anybody who has played the past games will be right at home here, unfortunately for everybody else the Virtua Fighter series has never been beginner friendly and will take a few hours learning the basics of the game, before you really start enjoying it. Quest mode has you traveling from arcade to arcade earning points to buy accessories to change the appearance of your character. This adds a lot of replayability, but after a while you will wish that it had an online mode for you to challenge new people. Note to all of the veteran players out there, the PS3 version is based on Ver. B of the arcade version and not the newer Ver. C, which includes some balance tweaks. But the differences are minimal and unless you are a hardcore player you will probably not notice the difference.

5 Star Review best fighting game

Strengths:

a lot characters

Weaknesses:

hard to play, doesn't have any online play

Posted Dec 13, 2007 - Best fighting game. No other fighting game ever made can match the intricate beauty of this game. I grow up with this game. This new version has definitely the best image quality with PS3's hardware accelation. I like the deepest single-player mode, quest mode, a lot. Too bad Virtua Fighter 5 doesn't have any online play.

3 Star Review Same game, better graphics

Strengths:

Pretty graphics, lots of moves, two new fighters to select

Weaknesses:

Basically the same game; no online player versus player on PS3 version

Posted Dec 3, 2007 - Let me start off by saying I am a huge fan of Virtua Fighter. I loved the original game in the arcades and was quite good at it. I bought the Sega 32X to get it for home play. I bought the Sega Saturn to play it, even buying Virtua Fighter Kids. I bought the Sega collection game for the PSP to play something that calls itself a Virtua Fighter game. I bought both Virtua Fighter 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution for the PS2. Now I bought a PS3 and Virtua Fighter 5. And I am quite disappointed. This game is just like Virtua Fighter 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution. Sure, the graphics are better, but, underneath it all, it's the same game. I guess that could be said about most of the series...maybe I'm finally growing tired of it. After playing a lot of VF4, the game essentially boiled down to a game of rock-paper-scissors, except it's low attack-mid attack-high attack. I used to be interested in the new characters they tack on, not minding buying the game all over again to get them, but, for whatever reason, I just can't get excited about El Blaze (luchador) and Eileen (monkey style). And the music...oh god, the music...I hate it. It's so last-gen. In fact, aside from the graphics upgrade, I don't see how VF5 takes advantage of anything else the new console has to offer. The music stinks, the game seems tiny (so no real use of the Blu-Ray disc, yet it takes up a huge amount of hard disk space anyway). On top of that, Sega screwed PS3 owners by putting online play in the 360 version but not this one. I'm sure Sega will repackage this with online and some other add-ons and re-release it again for the PS3, since this is the sort of thing they've done throughout the series, but I'm out. I've become very jaded about Virtua Fighter, and, unless Sega shows me something revolutionary, this is my last Virtua Fighter installment.

3 Star Review Good fighting game with some missing features

Strengths:

One of the first fighting games for the PS3, Quest mode is fun.

Weaknesses:

No online support, some load times are rather long.

Posted Sep 25, 2007 - This is a good fighting game for the PS3 and can be purchased for a decent price. Graphics are very good, although it cannot compare to games such as Heavenly Sword. Quest mode is a lot of fun and winning money and unlocking items helps to extend the gameplay. Playing against/with your friends is a blast. The game is lacking in that there is no online mode at all. In contrast, the upcoming Xbox 360 version will have online support. I guess this is why the PS3 version can be purchased for a somewhat discounted price. However, you can purchase Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection from the Playstation Store for less money than Virtua Fighter 5 and Tekken 5 DR has both a single player and online mode.

5 Star Review Incredible showcase for the PS3

Strengths:

A good game (not just a tech demo for PS3's graphics), deep fighting system, gorgeous graphics

Weaknesses:

No online play (as is promised for the Xbox 360), difficult to just pick up and play, long initial load times

Posted Aug 29, 2007 - Virtua Fighter 5 is Sega's first "next gen" fighting game and it really shows off both the potential of the Virtua Fighter series as well as the PS3 itself. Even on a standard definition TV, the game is a graphics powerhouse for the PS3, and does the system justice. As for the game itself, Sega yet again shows why the Virtua Fighter series has remained popular for so long. It is a very deep fighting game where "pick up and play" will only get you so far-- you really have to learn the game and understand how it's played to win against the best. (which I definitely am not!) That said, it means it's a deep game with a lot of replay value, as long as you're not easily frustrated. The biggest single downside to the game is the loading times-- even installing it to the hard drive when you first start it up doesn't quite bring the game to where it should be in load times, not to mention having to tell it to use the cached data every time you start the game (and then it has to check the HD's copy instead of just launching). But for a near-launch game for the PS3 I can't blame it for being a bit rough around the edge. The lack of online play is a shame, especially since it appears the Xbox 360 version will have it, but except for that minor hitch this is really a great game and experience for the PS3.

3 Star Review VF4 + better graphics = VF5

Strengths:

Deep fighting system, decent graphics

Weaknesses:

No online play, long load time, annoying character voices

Posted Jun 15, 2007 - This game is very similar to VF4 on the PS2. Basically, if you liked VF4, you will like VF5. There are couple technical issues with this game. First is the lack of online play. In this day and age, fighting games need to have online play, period! Then there's the long load time, even if you cache the game to the hard drive; VF5 have about 5 seconds load time between each stage. It's not bad but if former disc based consoles and the Xbox 360 can do near zero load time with fighting games, why can't the PS3?! All in all, it's one of the better games for the PS3 since the system doesn't have any real quality software yet. However, be prepare for a steep learning curve if you are new to the series.
