2 Star Review Buy the other systems' version if you have the choice

Strengths:

5 decent games in one package

Weaknesses:

Slow framerate, no dolby digital via optical out, long load times, EA server drops connection a lot when playing TF2

Posted May 30, 2008 - This is a nice compilation of Valve's latest games. They stuffed 5 in this bundle making it a great value for the price. However, the PS3 version is the weakest port of them all. It's done by EA, not Valve and lacks quality in several areas. First, the game has inconsistant framerate. Second, the Dolby Digital sound track is only available through HDMI connection. Dolby ProLogic is used with optical out. That is very disappointing considering Half Live 2 on the original Xbox featured Dolby Digital over optical and sounded 10x better. The PS3 port is a step backwards even though it is the latest console. Finally, there's frequent long load times. Even game saves take longer than usual. I summed up the flaws as EA's bad programming. On the other systems where Valve themselves actually made the games, they have none of these problems. Therefore, if you have a choice, get the Xbox 360 or PC version. I got the PS3 version because it's nearly 50% less on clearance compares to the 360 version and I don't have a high end PC. However, I eneded up with nearly 50% less enjoyment. The game is good, but this port isn't! My score of 2 stars is strictly for the PS3 version. The 360 and PC versions get 4 stars easily. Added 5/30/08 Additional con is that the online portion of this PS3 port is broken by EA's server where it drops you every few minutes. It's completely unplayable. I have no problems with any other online games on the PS3 and 360. I've already sold this broken piece of EA garbage port.

5 Star Review Orange Box is a must have!

Strengths:

I love Portals! This is the only game I played.

Weaknesses:

Screen frozes during loading and fps is very slow.

Posted Mar 24, 2008 - If you love Portal then you should get Orange Box on Playstation 3, because its make you addict. Other games like Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 is pretty fun!

5 Star Review Orange Box - More like a Deal Box

Strengths:

Five great games at a great price

Weaknesses:

Little lag in online play

Posted 1 year ago - This game has five great games in a package priced for a single game. My favorite was portal but I am sure that everyone who has slightest interest in shooting genre will find great excitement in at least one of the included games. You have great online play in Team Fortress 2 although it may lag a little at times (My only complaint). If you are fan of Half series, you get both Half life 2 & Half life 2 episode 1. Half life 2 looks much better than the same game on original Xbox(never came out on PS2). Portal is a real innovative game although it is a little on the short side. For the bargain price that this game is available now at few places, it is a steal. Do not miss it

5 Star Review Orange Box for PS3

Strengths:

Five terrific games in a single package makes this game a must buy for virtually every gamer. Portal by itself is good enough to make a full price game alone.

Weaknesses:

Definitely a buggy game compare with the 360 version. Slow frame rate and long load time will also hurt the PS3 owner over the far superior 360 ver.

Posted 1 year ago - Portal is very very good game and justify the purchase of this game by its own. Regarding to Team Fortress 2, it is also a very good online only game, unfortunately EA did a very poor job in porting the game from 360, and the EA server is very buggy which will drops you very often. Overall i would recommend the 360 version over this PS3 version.

4 Star Review half life for half price!

Strengths:

Portal

Weaknesses:

Buggy without the patch

Posted 1 year ago - I would highly recommend this set of games since it is now a budget title. PORTAL is worth the price of admission and the other games are nice to have on a console rather than booting up the PC. It is a little buggy at times, but the patch fixes most of the problems with the PS3 version. Overall I really like all the games, but Portal is the most entertaining. It is innovative, has a fresh feel, and would be a great addition to your library.

3 Star Review It could have been so much better

Strengths:

Great Value

Weaknesses:

Buggy

Posted 1 year ago - I was so excited to finally get this game for the PS3 after reading the reviews on all the other systems. Unfortunately, as soon as I loaded up Team Fortress 2 and started a match, I had my worst yet gameplay experience on the PS3. It was extremely choppy and jittery. Very disappointing for what could have been such a fun game. The Half-Life series are highly rated games, but you really have to get into the story, because the graphics do look a bit dated. And yes, the load times are quite long. Nonetheless, where else can you get this many decent games at this price? Definitely a decent buy, but not a great one.

4 Star Review Orange Box on PS3

Strengths:

5 games in one. Portal is very enjoyable.

Weaknesses:

Glitchier than the PC and Xbox360 versions

Posted 1 year ago - For five FPS (first-person shooter) games on one disk that can be had for under $30, this is a very good purchase. The packaging cover doesn't quite do the contents justice - it downplays the Half Life 2 and HL2 Episode One. But Orange Box actually contains all five games (HL2, HL2 Episode 1, HL2 Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2) in their entireties. Most of these games have earned great reviews individually, Portal was even considered the 2007 game of the year at many places. I think the ingenious design of Portal alone justifies the price of admission - it combines puzzle game and FPS into one addictive game. The PS3 version unfortunately does not compare as well as the PC or the Xbox 360 versions. The game's creator Valve had openly exppressed their dislike for the PS3 console's structure. Most of the single-player games in Orange Box play fine on PS3, but there are occasional lags and small glitches. However, the sole online-only game, Team Fortress 2, has garnered quite a few complaints because its bugs and lack of updates when compared with PC and 360 versions. But for the same reasons, the PS3 version can be found at a slightly cheaper price than the other versions. If you are a diehard FPS fan, you probably have already played this game on PC or 360. But for those new to FPS genre who want to know what the fuss is all about, this is a great game. Especially if you don't plan to play against others online, the Hife Life 2 games and Portal will keep you busy for quite a while.

4 Star Review Good value

Strengths:

A lot of gaming in one package

Weaknesses:

Half-Life 2 is a pretty old game nowadays

Posted 1 year ago - When "Half Life 2" was first released in 2004, it was hailed almost universally as The Game of the Year. However, it's now 2008, and here's "Half Life 2" again. I've played much of "Half Life 2" before on the original Xbox system. The game is about the same. The graphics have undergone an improvement. It's not anything that'll blow away games like "Call of Duty 4" or "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune", but they definitely better than the version from the original Xbox. The game is still very good. Back in 2004, first person shooters were mostly storyless affairs like "Unreal Tournament" and "Quake" or mission-based "Tom Clancy/Delta Force"-like stuff. The "Half Life" series was a first person shooter with a very immersive story, so it was refreshing. Nowadays, it's not as big a deal, but it's still good. Players may need to beef up on the "Half Life 1" storyline to make sense of what's going on. To make up for the fact that "Half Life 2" is essentially 3 or 4 years old, some new and relatively new stuff was added to the "Orange Box". There's "Half Life 2: Episodes 1 and 2." These are installments that extend the "Half Life 2" game. I think these might be old too, but I've never played them before so they were new to me. There are some glitches with these installment episodes that are corrected by a downloadable patch, so make sure you update your game via an online connection. The "Orange Box" also contains "Portal", a short (a few hours to complete) first person puzzle game using first person shooter gun mechanics as a puzzle device. You play as a test subject with an experimental gun that opens teleportation portals and you mostly use it to get from point A to point B. It's pretty innovative, has a good dose of comedy, and some of the later puzzles get tricky. The last part of the "Orange Box" is "Team Fortress 2". "Team Fortress 2" is a purely online multiplayer component which is pretty refreshing in that, instead of having everyone in the match playing as basically the same character, players have to choose a role or specialty. "Call of Duty 4" does something like this as well. I think it's a good feature to try to promote teamwork in multiplayer games. For people who have never played "Half Life 2" before, I think "Orange Box" is a "buy". Not only are you getting to play "Half Life 2", which won Game of the Year in 2004 for good reason, you are getting so much more with it. For those who have already played "Half Life 2" in its many different prior releases (it was even on the Dreamcast before), I think "Orange Box" is worth getting for $40 or less because you're still getting "Episode 1", "Episode 2", "Portal" and "Team Fortress 2". $10 for each of those is not bad, and then you also have the option to play "Half Life 2" again with improved graphics.

4 Star Review orangebox

Strengths:

great compilation, great game play, portal is awesome

Weaknesses:

choppy framerate, load times

Posted 1 year ago - Orange Box is a collection of Half-Life titles which include Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2. For those of you that don’t already know, half-life is a first person shooter great game play. I really only got it to play team fortress with my friends. I haven’t put too much time into any of the actual half-life games, but portal is a puzzle game that is really entertaining. Team fortress is also entertaining and I think the cartoon style graphics they use works really well. Definitely recommend this title for any fps fans out there.

4 Star Review Fantastic Compilation

Strengths:

Great value for the money

Weaknesses:

this is not a next-generation game

Posted Apr 26, 2008 - Orange Box is a game that gives you great value for the money. It is 5 games in one: 3 FPS, one puzzle, and one multiplayer. The FPS games are not necessarily highest quality games in themselves (they're a little aged now), but if you're looking for a mindless shooter, they will do the trick. Portal is a fun puzzle game. If you're looking to pick this title up for any one of the 5 games, it might not be worth the money. However, if you will enjoy playing all of them, then this is definitely a must-have.

4 Star Review The Orange Box PS3

Strengths:

Great Value

Weaknesses:

Inferior to PC version

Posted Feb 28, 2008 - The Orange Box offers great value to the consumer. It includes Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. Half Life is a high quality single player FPS. Team Fortress offers solid online multi-player and Portal is more of a puzzle game. All in all the orange box is a strong purchase.

4 Star Review A Half-Life box set, is it worth it?

Strengths:

The Orange Box is Definitly something fresh from the average commercial console games you see poping up almost daily. You've basically got 5 games in one, which for the price makes it a must buy.

Weaknesses:

I've compaired the game from PC to PS3 and I think it looks better on the PC. Moreover the controls were originally ment for the PC so playing with a controler can complicate movement slightly.

Posted Jan 5, 2008 - Overall The Orange Box is a great deal, definitely worth a try and a buy if you dig the games. Included in the box set is a new game called Portal which is a fun puzzle game that I highly enjoyed playing. It's a trip! You also got Team Fortress 2; only for on-line play. It's nothing spectacular but it's fun to kill some time with. So please give this game a whirl, first person shoot 'em ups are fun don't get me wrong but if your like me and want alittle more than the usual get a hold of The Orange Box.

5 Star Review Great Game!

Strengths:

Gameplay is classic! Extreme value with mutiple games in one box.

Weaknesses:

A few slow spots on PS3.

Posted Jan 4, 2008 - The few slow spots still are not enough to detract from the overall enjoyment of this game. I would highly recommend this game to any FPS (First Person Shooter) fan.
