Strengths:Graphics, sound, 1080p 60fps, online play
Weaknesses:Price, frustrating penalty system, cannot host your own game during online play
Posted May 6, 2008 - With the real game still a year away, Sony decides to release this oversize demo for the fans of the series to keep them busy for the time being, for $40. The price is defenitely a bit on the high side. Considering it's only a beefy demo, it should be no more than $25. Price aside, the game feature great graphics overall with smooth framerates, good sound effects and music, upto 16 players online racing, 6 tracks and about 70 cars. Overall, not a bad package. The bad side of the game is the penalty system where you get time penalization when you go off tracks or bump AIs. It's not bad when you are in the game's A,B,C class races. It's when you reach the S class races where the system becomes very frustrating. Some of the S class races require you to go from 16th place all the way to at least 3rd place to clear. Basically, you have no time to make any mistake. The AIs will bump you from time to time and cause you to lose valuable seconds. Couple bumps and you can forget about winning the race. I don't mind the penalization system for a more challenging experience but it should be issued to the AIs too. The AIs can bump all they want and go off tracks with no penalization. That's is just wrong and makes the game frustrating. I certainly hope this can be corrected in the final game, along with the ability to host your own game and invite friends during online play. Without these two major flaws, this oversize demo is quite decent.
