The robo sapien from a construction stand point is ...
Programmable Functions, Great range of motion, versatile, relatively cheap for what you get, incredibly stable, Functional demos and commands out of the box, KIDS WILL LOVE IT!! (and some adults)
Packaging from hell, No Mute command, No Seperate command for arm rotate and open close claw. Targeting system for picking up would have been nice.
Posted Dec 20, 2004 - The robo sapien from a construction stand point is relatively well made. (We even rammed the woot remote controlled car into it for awhile while it was walking and were unable to tip it.) The parts do not feel to flimsy and there is nothing there for kids to swallow or really hurt themselves with assuming they play with a decent amount of responsibility. The operation is relatively simple with an IR remote to the robot with the buttons labeled with 3 seperate set of commands, which are accessed using a shift key. The asthetic appeal of the robot is rather pleasing and the size is impressive. All I got to say is when I was a child I really wish there was a toy this cool around. I can imagine all the fun i'd have with this thing merging them with legos and other figurines. Anyway to the basics, the robot has several regular functions such as sound effects, pickup, throw, several variations of chop, independent control for both arms, walking, and turning. The robot is programmable so that you can program in a sequence of command to occur at the touch of a button or occur as a result of setting off either the touch or sound sensor. This offers a whole bunch of creative programming. The commands may be imtimmidating for kids and even adults at first but after awhile it becomes relatively intuitive. Wowwee even offers some guides for preset programs here- www.wowwee.com/robosap... . The range of motion and the way the robot moves it's arms especially is the most impressive part. It reminds me of all those movies I used to watch as a kid with robots and big guns like in robocop. One of the features I wish they left in was either a mute button or a volume slider. Since I use this product at work mainly, I would prefer when fiddling around with it that it not make so much noise. However many people in the office have found it to be quite amusing (I taped some paper to the speaker grill to mute it a bit). The robot itself also comes with various premade demos such as dance where he plays some music and starts doing the "robot" har har. If you got to buy any kid (especially a boy who loves robots) this is the toy to get. Maybe it'll also pull your kid off the couch from all those video games, after all playing with the robo sapien is better on the eyes. Another note: Parents should help thier kid unpackage this item for sure. It took us quite awhile to get this bad boy out of the box at the office (took just about my whole lunch break). The box is litereally a crazy prison enclosure with everything securely tied (at least he won't be moving around). And to top it off here's a link to a picture of my robo sapien in action- zoglog.clearlyseen.net...
