Strengths:Sleek look, conveniently small, affordable high capacity recording, easy-to-use menu, great sound quality, and ability to add index points.
Weaknesses:Screen scratches easily (happened on my first day using it) and no carrying case (you can purchase a bulky one that carries the USB cradle and everything).
Posted Nov 10, 2004 - I love this recorder! I waited some time before writing this review because I know that a product can initially be very amusing, but after some time, the downfalls of the product emerge. As a college student, I bought this recorder for lectures because microcassette tapes became a hassle to organize and to constantly erase. Olympus DM-10 was the most affordable, high capacity recorder, and DM-20 was a beyond my budget. The recordings come out great in lecture. Even from the back of class, I can pick up clear recordings of my professors on the lowest quality (LP), but I would recommend boosting the quality just slightly to SP and listening to the recordings with the provided headphones.
Besides that, if the lectures don’t come out clear from your headphones, there’s also a noise cancellation function within the recorder and the software program. The manual explains how to use this function because the menu doesn’t display it. Overall, the manual is very easy to read, the software is so simple to install, and the menu in the recorder takes about 2 minutes to master.
I was a bit worried about using the software because other reviewers expressed trouble, but I had no problems. The first time I used it was smooth sailing…the computer recognized the recorder immediately and the program was a no-brainer. On the other hand, the second time was a little more frustrating, but I played with my recorder and after some time it worked like magic again. So just try fiddling with it. Right now, my friends are trying to use the program because I can send them the files to lectures they’ve missed, so no longer do I have to share my microcassette tapes and wait forever to get them back. Now I can easily share and store my recordings without ever deleting them.
About the music feature…I haven’t used it. Frankly, I intend to use my recorder as only a recorder, but it’s nice to know that I can add music if I want. I would recommend buying a recorder with a larger audio capacity. Even though the DM-10 can record 22 hours, it cannot handle a lot of songs like an mp3 player and simultaneously handle hours and hours of lecture recordings.
I love the index cue points you can add to recordings. During recording, I add index points when a professor says something important or changes topics. In addition, since a lot of my classes use PowerPoint slides, I add index points every few slides so I can scan through my recordings a lot easier when studying. You can always modify or erase these index points later through the software.
In addition, I love the folder system. I name the folders after my classes and doing so really helps me organize my recordings. Overall, this recorder has helped me stay on top of my classes because I don’t miss anything from lecture…I’ll never go back to microcassette tapes!
