4 Star Review Re-format (reformat) Olympus DM-10

Strengths:

It's been reliable, sturdy, and produces excellent recordings.

Weaknesses:

I'm delighted with the product; however, after a two-month period of inactivity, with new batteries the recorder booted back up with foreign characters. Needed to call Olympus support.

Posted Sep 17, 2007 - Here are the steps from Olympus tech support to reformat the Olympus DM-10. Be sure to remove any files you want to keep beforehand. Along with resetting any stored recordings, reformatting will reset the device back to the initial language (English for mine). (1) set device to VOICE and make sure HOLD is off (2) press/hold DISPLAY/MENU for four seconds (3) press REW six times (4) press PLAY (5) press REW (6) press PLAY (7) press REW (8) press PLAY www.olympusamerica.com...

Strengths:

One the whole, this recorder is top notch. The built in microphone has a good pick-up range. In SHQ and HQ mode, the sound is suberb. Its a big bonus that it doubles as an MP3 player.

Weaknesses:

The software installer crashes on my Windows 2000 machine. The voice versus music modes setting is confusing and seems like it could be removed. The menu is not so instructive or easy to navigate.

Posted Jun 6, 2004 - On the whole, I like this device a lot. It performs well, the range of recording types provides ample recording time and sound quality control, its small size is perfect for stashing away in your pocket or small bag, and the provided accessories are also compact and well built. The metal body is also an excellent feature as it makes the unit that much more robust -- I've already dropped it a number of times by accident and its holding up just fine. However, there are a few things I'd wish for in the next model. 1) Some means of expanding the memory capacity of the device (ex. Sony memory sticks), or for swapping between large collections of recordings and music without having to do a data transfer 2) a clearer menu system, and easier menu navigation 3) cradle based battery recharger. A carrying case would have also been a nice touch.

Strengths:

It has great sound quality even on the hp mode. I'm using it for lectures and it picks up the prof from the back of the room. It is small and it isn't flimsy.

Weaknesses:

I connected it to my pc through the included usb and it was not recognized it says there is no driver sooooo i can't download any of the material. I emailed olympus and I'm waiting for a response.

Posted Aug 18, 2004 - Over I think this is a great product especially if you are looking for a recorder for lectures...the sound quality is great, it has the most memory for its price, and it looks like a sturdy product. I looked at allthe reviews for a bunch of digital voice recorders and I tried buying a cheaper one but I ended up with the dm-10 because it gives you the most bang for your buck. The only thing that dissapointed me was that I the usb connection didn't work. Hopefully I can fix that.

5 Star ReviewI am a proffessional speaker. I speak to audiences ...

Strengths:

Superior Audio Quality and simplicity of use.

Weaknesses:

Needed to contact Olympus to reformat when it accidently changed to Chinese language. They responded promptly.

Posted Mar 16, 2004 - I am a proffessional speaker. I speak to audiences 5 times a week on average. For more than 17 years I've been looking for this solution. Finally, Technology has caught up with my desires and given an incredible device for recording live speaking environments. The DM-10 is a phenomenal little device. It uses a WMA file for capturing Audio. I use a Sony Stereo Mic. To record I simply push record and put the hold Switch to on and put it in my pocket. When I'm finished I take the switch off of hold and push stop. It's that simple. But while many machines offer that simplicity of recording what they produce is far inferior. I don't use the supplied software, however, it does appear to be good. I installed it and it readily recognized the recorder when plugged in to the USB Port. When I'm ready to download my freshly recorded audio file I simply plug it into the USB Port on my laptop and Windows XP recognizes it as a remote drive. I then open the file and drag it to where ever I want to keep it on my system. I then open it with Sound forge and edit it. This audio file is a perfect speaking audio file. While I wouldn't recommend it for music, it is perfect for speaking. Every minister or motivation speaker should have one of these. The Audio file is perfect. It boosts the signal when you are quiet and suppresses it when you are loud. I position my mic about 10 inches down from my mouth and get a perfect audio file. Not one "clip" and absolutely no noise whatsoever. I convert my files to mono through sound forge which gives you the option of merging the two stero tracks thus doubling the quality. When burned to a CD it is unparalleled. I don't use the unit for MP3's. In my my mind that's a nice added feature but the real power is being able to record a perfect recording whether you're standing my a campfire or in front of 5,000 people. I love this machine. The DM-10 can hold two hours and twenty minutes of Super High Quality (Their term) Recording. What that is, is a "left" and a "right" of 64 Kbs. When merged with Soud forge it a a mono track of 128K. That is standard CD Quality. It takes about 4 minutes to down load an hour speach. I can record 8 hours of speaking on one set (two AAA) of batteries. The only problem I had was I bought some batteries that I've come to realize were no good. When it ran low the display turned to chinese characters. I then had to contact Olympus to find out how to reset the system. It should be included in the manual. They promptly responded (weekdays) both my email and also when I phoned them stepping me through the process. The machine, however, continued to record, even with the chinesse characters.

Strengths:

Sleek look, conveniently small, affordable high capacity recording, easy-to-use menu, great sound quality, and ability to add index points.

Weaknesses:

Screen scratches easily (happened on my first day using it) and no carrying case (you can purchase a bulky one that carries the USB cradle and everything).

Posted Nov 10, 2004 - I love this recorder! I waited some time before writing this review because I know that a product can initially be very amusing, but after some time, the downfalls of the product emerge. As a college student, I bought this recorder for lectures because microcassette tapes became a hassle to organize and to constantly erase. Olympus DM-10 was the most affordable, high capacity recorder, and DM-20 was a beyond my budget. The recordings come out great in lecture. Even from the back of class, I can pick up clear recordings of my professors on the lowest quality (LP), but I would recommend boosting the quality just slightly to SP and listening to the recordings with the provided headphones. Besides that, if the lectures don’t come out clear from your headphones, there’s also a noise cancellation function within the recorder and the software program. The manual explains how to use this function because the menu doesn’t display it. Overall, the manual is very easy to read, the software is so simple to install, and the menu in the recorder takes about 2 minutes to master. I was a bit worried about using the software because other reviewers expressed trouble, but I had no problems. The first time I used it was smooth sailing…the computer recognized the recorder immediately and the program was a no-brainer. On the other hand, the second time was a little more frustrating, but I played with my recorder and after some time it worked like magic again. So just try fiddling with it. Right now, my friends are trying to use the program because I can send them the files to lectures they’ve missed, so no longer do I have to share my microcassette tapes and wait forever to get them back. Now I can easily share and store my recordings without ever deleting them. About the music feature…I haven’t used it. Frankly, I intend to use my recorder as only a recorder, but it’s nice to know that I can add music if I want. I would recommend buying a recorder with a larger audio capacity. Even though the DM-10 can record 22 hours, it cannot handle a lot of songs like an mp3 player and simultaneously handle hours and hours of lecture recordings. I love the index cue points you can add to recordings. During recording, I add index points when a professor says something important or changes topics. In addition, since a lot of my classes use PowerPoint slides, I add index points every few slides so I can scan through my recordings a lot easier when studying. You can always modify or erase these index points later through the software. In addition, I love the folder system. I name the folders after my classes and doing so really helps me organize my recordings. Overall, this recorder has helped me stay on top of my classes because I don’t miss anything from lecture…I’ll never go back to microcassette tapes!

Strengths:

Solid construction; Great looking; Compact; Intuitive to use; Non-linear access.

Weaknesses:

Reguires reading of the instructions and practice to become used to Menu use.

Posted Jul 12, 2004 - I have owned an Olympus L200 Microcassette recorder for 15 years and have been very pleased with it. With the advent of digital recording I wanted to see what Olympus had produced. The DM-10 was the least expensive of this series. The DM-20 has more built-in memory and the DS-2200 is capable of a memory card that holds whatever amount of memory you want. This DM-10 looks great and its bronze color is less visible than the silver of the other D series recorders. Best of all, is recording within Folders and sub-sections of those folders. The non-linear aspect of digital recording makes it easy to get around folders and sections. I use SP mode which gives me over 20 hours of recording time at 300 to 5,000 Hz. The software provided allows me to transfer recording via USB to my PC.

Strengths:

Size, Sound quaility, setup and transfer is a breeze, good interface

Weaknesses:

Posted Jan 7, 2005 - The DM-10 is a wonderful work tool. The sound quality is excellent for such a small pocket size recorder. The battery life is good. This all digital device eliminates the need for tapes; and that's a good thing. Data is easily stored in WMV format on your PC. I would highly recommend this handy, easy to use recorder for home or office. I have not tried the MP3 feature on this unit.

Strengths:

Easy to use. Generates very good recordings. Small and compact. Requires no special batteries, chargers or cables. Like the fast play function.

Weaknesses:

The enclosed DSS-player is unstable, it lost the connection twice, so I had to reinstall. Speaker is somewhat bad, and browsing a interview is painfully slow using FF/REW. I'm missing a clip.

Posted Feb 6, 2005 - I'm using this device for interviewing relatives, for my genealogical and historical research. So far the device have worked perfect for me. I have also used it with my inductive pickup, which I place on my telephone headset for recording telephone conversation, and that worked tremendously well on this device, because the noise level wasn't there. I previously used a olympus with micro-casette, and it was too noisy. When people talked too faint, I could barely hear them afterwards on the tape. I tried to find an update for the DSS player software, and I couldn't find any. That's irritating. I only found several "lite-version", but not the same as the enclosed version. If you make lengthy recordings, and don't have access to a PC at all times to upload the files to, then I would suggest one device with larger memory. I would probably buy this again, as it fully satisfies my needs.
