The Olympus 141910 Olympus Ds-40 Digital Voice Recorder stores highly compressed WMA (Windows Media Audio) format voice messages in integrated flash memory. High-sensitivity detachable stereo microphone included, offering excellent portability. Built-in monaural microphone for monaural recording. Three modes of microphone sensitivity to meet recording needs. Several recording modes can be selected including stereo recording modes ST XQ or ST HQ, and three types of monaural recording modes including HQ, SP, and LP. Five voice folders can save up to 200 messages per folder. Music, Podcast, and Audible folder are also available. New, brighter high-contrast monochrome LCD panel with backlight. The voice guidance feature gives audio notification of operating conditions. It ensures seamless operation of various complex functions. Built-in Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) function. Timer Recording and Alarm features enable automatic recording and playing at a set time. The Low Cut Filter minimizes air conditioner noise and other similar noises while recording. Amazing little digital voice recorder

Strengths:

Small footprint, brand name, nice design, detachable external mic

Weaknesses:

None so far

Posted Jun 4, 2008 - It was a hard decision to pick the Olympus, I was shifted more to the Sony voice recorder that are cheaper than Olympus but can play MP3 and has larger storage. After reading a lot of reviews online about the Olympus DS40, I know I didn't make a wrong decision purchasing it. I couldn't believe when I first held the recorder in my hands, it's tiny and removing the external mic makes it even smaller. Sound quality is amazing. I even recorded some phone conversation using speaker on the cell phone but it's really good. Glad it didn't come with rechargeable battery. i prefer using the AAA battery that is widely available.

Strengths:

easy to handle and work. records all discussion activities great.

Weaknesses:

no charger with unit no rechargeable batteries

Posted Nov 4, 2007 - This product has great memory capacity, easy to carry with you. Picks up voice in large rooms, and play back very clear. Purchase case and charger when purchasing this product.

little recorder that could (hopefully)

Strengths:

small, holds a lot of info, software, good sound quality

Weaknesses:

maybe a bit too small, no rechargeable battery

Posted Jun 30, 2007 - I'm a grad student conducting research and I'm planning to use this to record interviews. I tried it out with some friends and so far it creates much better recordings than my old tape recorder, but I have yet to see what will happen when I'm actually out "in the field." Nevertheless, it seems to be a promising little recorder. My old tape recorder was a good one but the quality of the recording depended heavily on the setting of the interview-- and rarely do we have perfect conditions for interviews. It took me hours to transcribe and listen to the tapes. Moreover, buying and carrying around all those tapes was a real pain. I'm hoping this little device will redress these complaints and make it easier to anlayse the recordings, make notes, etc. It allows indexing the recordings with notes. I'll probably try to use this in conjunction with OneNote.

Superb

Strengths:

Recording Quality, Detachable Mic, Metal Body

Weaknesses:

Detachable mic feels cheap

Posted Jun 29, 2007 - Lots of features in this small package such as low pass filter, noise cancelling, voice filter etc. Recording quality is great, 3 options : Lecture, Conference, Dictation. Frequency Range is large so you won't miss anything you want to be there. One thing I got disappointed is there's no dictation software coming with the package. However, I prefer not paying extra for a program I won't need or use too much.
