Great Recorder!

Strengths: very light and compact, easy to use

Weakness: would like a better sound quality

It works great for my classes! Previously using a SONY cassette voice recorder, I am very impressed with the features of this tiny digital recorder. It's so easy to use through the menu choices with no lag. With the PC-link availability, I am able to put all of my class notes on a CD and listen while driving. It's a great PC-compatible voice recorder, but I hope it has a better sound quality for music. And if there is a case coming handy, that would be better!

exactly what i needed

Strengths: pc connectivity, software, very sensitive mic

Weakness: no off switch, advanced editing features are tedious... save it for after you transfer the files to a pc.

i'm usually not a fan of sony products, but this is a great recorder. i've tried a few others, and this is the best so far. one great feature is the usb connection, which gives you limitless storage, and the ability to burn to a cd. i was very impressed with the included software.

ICD-P520

Strengths: Compact size, user friendly, large memory

Weakness: I playback volume using built in speaker was a bit low. I had to use headphones instead

I purchased this product for college lectures. My classes are in a large lecture hall, but the recording sound quality is still quite good. This unit connects to my PC so I am able to transfer my lectures to computer. I am very satisfied with this product

Easy to use, does the job

Strengths: Very easy to use, and USB connectivity, has posts for mic and headphone, compact

Weakness: Difficulty using with Dragonspeak, needs a case

I bought this recorder to use to dictate interviews with Dragonspeak with the USB connectivity. The sound quality is decent with multiple options to use either the built-in mic or a corded mic. The PC-link software is easy to use also. I just wished it would work better with dragonspeak 8, but I think it is a software issue. I wished Sony would sell a case or offer one to protect the recorder.

could it be better? Yes.

Strengths: easy to use, battery life, features

Weakness: too much background noise. very weak from a distance

I use it for my classes. I have to put it on prof's desk otherwise I ll here everything else but him. But it is amazing from close distance.great for small classes and meetings and personal note taking. But I don't think it is possible to get anything better in this price range

Sony ICD P520

Strengths: Good design, long recoring capacity

Weakness: Voice activation horrible

I've read many, many reviews on this product, and I am amazed that I seem to be the only one complaining about the VOX feature on this thing. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!

While testing it with the VOX feature enabled, I start talking for a few seconds and I can see the device start pausing, start again, and pause again while I'm talking (it should only pause when there's no speech).

Play back the recording and there are numerous 5 to 10 second gaps in the speech! Also, I notice it also records while there's no speech sometimes. I even took the item back to the store (Office Depot) for an exchange, thinking it's just a problem with that one. The new one does the same, exact thing.

The other features and benefits of the device are great. But without a quality VOX capability, I can't use it.

Can I possibly be the only one who's experienced this?

I apologize. The feature I spoke on is not called 'VOX.' It's VOR, for voice operated recording. The feature enables the recorder to operate only when someone's speaking, or there's otherwise something currently audible to record. It saves recording capacity, and eliminates long pauses in playback.

The technology's been around for decades, so there's nothing new about it. It works so badly on this device, that I'm shocked I hadn't read a single complaint about it in all the reviews I've read.

good-looking, nice quality

Strengths: compact, light-weight, recording quality is good and clear.

Weakness: Plastic, feel a little cheap. No stereo.

The sony ICDP520 recorder is a decent recorder for recording lectures, conferences at reasonable price. It is user-friendly. The software interface is easy to follow too.
Feel a little cheap at hand, but you can't beat the price!

Handy Voice Recorder

Strengths: Small, Good Battery Life, Sound Quality, USB Interface

Weakness: Cost, Software

I purchased the voice recorder to record class lectures. The package is very small and operations is quite simple. The microphone is very effective and the device records with nice sound quality. Even at the highest quality, the recording capacity is quite good and get 100+ hours. The USB interface is nice and allows for the export of recording to the PC. The only complaint I have is that it requires Sony's software and can be a bit tedious. While the voice recorder is not the cheapest on the market, I would gladly recommend to anyone interested in one of this handy little devices.
