This is my first digital recorder which I purchased for recording class lectures. Simple to use and powerful software and convenient connectors to transfer the recordings onto your computer. Recording quality is satisfactory and I recommend this product.

Weakness: small memory (only 32MB)
This is a solid performer in digital voice recording field. It is very cost-effective compared to other name brand products at the same level. Recording and playing quality are excellent. It can record voice within a medium-size meeting room with 30 people and all sound details are captured.
Navigation controls and menu are very easy to operate. Even the relatively small built-in memory is a weakness, but you can work around it by transferring your recordings to PC via USB port and bundled software.
All in all, this is a very cost-effective, high quality digital voice recorder.

I bought this to record some lectures for class and I must say that it does its job great! Since this is a lower, older model, this particular recorder can be found for a pretty low price, which is always a good thing. The mic on it is VERY sensitive and will pick up the slightest sound near it. Navigation controls and menu are very easy to operate. Even the relatively small built-in memory is a weakness, but you can work around it by transferring your recordings to PC via USB port and bundled software.

I bought this to record some lectures for class and I must say that it does its job great! Since this is a lower, older model, this particular recorder can be found for a pretty low price, which is always a good thing. The mic on it is VERY sensitive and will pick up the slightest sound near it. The ability to transfer your sound files to your PC is terrific! No more tapes needed! My only gripe about this recorder is the software included. The drivers that are included are supposed to be compatible with Windows XP but I had some difficulties, such as manually selecting the right drivers. Once that is overcome, you have yourself a great digital recorder.

TopPC connectivity is the good function I like to have for editing audio sound and elimnating potential noise for better control of sound quality within a reasonable price range.

Weakness: So-so bundled software, speaker could be higher quality (but still very usable)
I previously owned the VN-240, however it was not made to be able to withstand the spin cycle and dryer ( that’s right, it got left in a pocket). I owned the non-PC version because I could digitize the sound files by hooking on the mic line to the ear line out the on the recorder and use audio software to record it. It was a simple solution , but VERY time consuming. I had to listen through the WHOLE thing to get it onto my computer. Can you say waste of time? I can...
But not anymore! This thing is great. I didn't see a need to get the VN-480PC because I'm able to dump the files onto my laptop on a daily basis. The mic works just fine for me when I'm recording lectures and tech. support calls (with the other persons consent of course).
The bundled software is okay, but don't expect anything to flashy. It does the job flawlessly once I got it up and running. I did have some minor problems with the drivers, but was resolved easily with a little bit of work.
I would highly recommend this product over the non PC version if you plan on moving many files to you computer. Great product!

Good product and good value for what you pay for. I found the olympus recorder easy to use and fairly straight forward. Interfacing with your computer simply requires you to download the software and plug and play. The only problem was the recorder feels cheap and seems like it would break if dropped. Otherwise, a good product for recording lectures.

I could have bought this unit, or another for the same price that had twice the memory, but no PC interface. The interface was important to me. I've thus far tried the Olympus software on 3 Windows XP machine, most recently on a clean install of XP SR2. The software had not worked on any machine I've tried. Email to customer support yielded: Gee, it works for us. I like the unit, but would not buy ANYTHING from olympus in the future.

Topcould someone please provide me Digital Wave Player software. I've purchased an olympus VN-960 PC voice-recorder an year back. The software worked fine with it then. Recently, I formatted my system & discovered that my CD is misplaced. Could some-one please provide me the link to download. or let me know what should I do now ?

Olympus VN-240 PC Digital PC Link Voice Recorder
Strengths: Small size, very sensitive microphone(with a good recording quality), easy to transfer files to the computer
Weakness: Confusing buttons on the panel
I am a graduate student using this voice recorder to record lectures and seminars. The quality and sensitivity of its microphone are very impressive. Recorded voice was clear though I recorded it from the back row of the 60-seat lecture room. The provided software for downloading voice files to a computer is also user-friendly. I highly recommend this recorder.
