The Griffin Technology 9066-IMIC2 iMic/USB Audio Interface, the original USB audio adapter, lets you connect virtually any microphone or sound input device to any Mac or PC system with a USB port. iMic supports both mic and line level inputs via a selectable switch, and has a variable level output for connecting speakers or headphones. The iMic really shines as the essential tool for converting your old LPs and tapes into MP3s and CDs. Griffin's audio recording software, Final Vinyl for Mac OS X (provided for free exclusively to iMic owners), makes recording old records and tapes very easy with its advanced features, including waveform-based cue editing and built-in 10-band EQ. You can use Final Vinyl to equalize LPs without having to connect a turntable to a pre-amp. iMic is also an ideal solution for your podcasting needs and for use with GarageBand, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro. minimize

4 Star Review Truth in advertising!

Strengths:

It does what it says!

Weaknesses:

Supplied with MAC software only -- and a freeware application for PCs.

Posted Aug 17, 2006 - I realized that I've been giving shelf space to nearly 200 LP recordings and 100 audio cassettes that were never released on CD. I've also got a turntable and a tape deck that do little more than take up space. With some time on my hands I decided to try ripping these archaic media and burning them to disc. That was when I realized that neither my desktop nor my notebook were set up for such a task. The iMic 2 sounded like the perfect answer. And it has proven to be just that. While I work at my computer on any number of other activities the iMic 2 is blithely going about its business, interfacing between the computer and either the turntable or the tape deck. The "mic" setting is perfect for the former, while the "line" setting handles the latter. I'm getting good, clear copies -- the only downside is the processing necessary to turn the raw audio files into CDs. I have yet to find an application that will do that automatically with any kind of reliability... So is it worth the cost? Most definitely. Does it do what it's advertised to do? You betcha!

5 Star Review Griffin iMic 2 works well

Strengths:

Support SONY ECM-DS70P Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone

Weaknesses:

USB wire is too short.

Posted May 18, 2006 - I bought this is want to use my Sony ECM-DS70P Electret Condenser Mic. This Mic need power and doesn't work on my PC's Mic. in. This iMic 2 supports Electret Condenser Stereo Mic.(at least ECM-DS70P) And now, I can get high quality voice recorded via the ECM-DS70P, same quality as recoded to MD player. Recommended it to you.

5 Star Review Griffin iMic 2

Strengths:

support Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone. No driver needed for Windows XP.

Weaknesses:

None.

Posted Nov 11, 2006 - I heard that this iMic2 supports the Electret Condenser Microphone, I purchased it. It let my Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone not only work with MD player but also Desktop/Laptop PC. Most of the sound card doesn't have power on MIC port to support Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone. If you want to get high quality Microphone input and you also have Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone, this device is a good choice for the interface with computer. Another application is I used it to get the 2nd sound card and I can separate the voice (like Skype) and audio (Music and ring of skype). Now, all the music are output to the speaker and the skype voice in/out is to/from the iMic, I don't need to switch them each time I use the headset for skype. Good device. I will buy another one once the price is down to $30 again.

4 Star Review Works as an independent sound card.

Strengths:

I have not used this much yet, but it does do what it purports to do. It works as a sound card that allows line or mic input and 3.5mm output. The recording quality seems very good.

Weaknesses:

I am getting a slight, intermittent noise when I record with the mic. I haven't ironed out the problem yet, but I suspect it is specific to my computer.

Posted Nov 21, 2007 - I wanted a second sound card for my laptop running Windows XP, so that I could record from two separate microphones at the same time. I can, and because the iMic acts as a second, independent sound card. Please note, however, that you will NOT be able to do this unless you have recording software that will allow two inputs and from two separate sound cards.

4 Star Review Griffin iMic2 -- Great product, great price!

Strengths:

Only product out there for the price. Does the job.

Weaknesses:

Sometimes seems to distort a little, but still, for the price, great product.

Posted Aug 14, 2007 - The iMic 2 is a great little product if you need to get audio from a stereo or mono source coming off a TRS (phone) jack to USB. Other devices cost a couple of times the amount. Its TRS input is an 1/8th inch but, obviously, you can convert the input to 1/4 for connection straight to guitar's, mics, mixers, etc. Supports mic and line levels. It comes with great software. My sons the musicians say that software is worth the price of the equipment. Highly recommended!

5 Star Review A good solution for simple problems

Strengths:

Smallish, durable, does what it claims, comes with useful software

Weaknesses:

None noted

Posted Jan 5, 2007 - I actually bought this product for a very modest purpose: I needed a port to plug speakers into, as the one on my old PowerBook G3 (Pismo) is broken. Since this product was only $10 at Radio Shack, it was a lot cheaper than getting the headphone port fixed (again!). The iMic lets me pump music through the much more durable USB port instead. And it works just fine! After purchasing it, I discovered that it serves one other useful purpose: it enables the Mac to use microphones. Current Macs only have a line-in port, which I discovered don't work with microphones. As a bonus, it came with useful Mac software for importing music from analog sources. (The software works only with the iMic plugged in, however). Final Vinyl for Mac OS X "makes recording old records and tapes super easy, with several advanced features such as waveform-based cue editing and built-in 10-band EQ. Final Vinyl can also equalize LPs without having to connect a turntable to a pre-amp. Just hook the turntable directly to the iMic, and Final Vinyl will record your LPs perfectly".

5 Star Review Providing mic input for MacBook

Strengths:

Easy to install, small size, decent sound quality

Weaknesses:

Output quality not quite up to par as internal sound card

Posted Oct 21, 2006 - Since Macs don't generally come with a microphone input port (only a line-in for powered microphones) I needed something USB based to use a headset or a microphone with my machine. Sure, I have a built-in microphone, but it's not good for high quality or anything. I plugged it in, went to system preferences to enable it, and it works. No drivers, no nagging Windows "installing new hardware" dialogs. Can change settings easily to use with Skype or any application, so I can choose if I want my built-in soundcard for output (which is of slightly higher quality) or the output with the iMic. Same goes for the input (built-in mic, iMic, etc.). Mac OS 10.4.8 makes this real easy to do. I haven't tried it in Windows yet, but it shouldn't work without too much difficulty (I do have Boot Camp installed on my MacBook.) I have tried it with various headsets (Labtec, Koss, Sennheiser) and they work just like they would in a regular soundcard. In short, this device fulfills for me the Mic jack that Macs should really have.

5 Star Review Excellent Accessory For Headsets

Strengths:

Small, needs no OS X software, selectable Mic/Line switch, cheap

Weaknesses:

Documentation on Final Vinyl only, very little information about use

Posted Oct 9, 2006 - This unit does exactly what it says it will, provide audio in and out including mic. access. It works fabulously on my 15" MacBook Pro, and I use it with a Sennheiser CC-550 call-center headset. I currently have it hooked up to a Sennheiser UI 730 and switch between my computer and desktop phone with a button. My only real complaint is that there is so little documentation. Truthfully, it doesn't need much documentation, but since most packages have more information, I expected some statements basically letting me know not to worry.
