The Logitech Harmony 1000 features a brilliant 3.5 color touch screen that allows for one-touch activity-based control of even the most sophisticated A/V components. Say goodbye to the wasted time and unnecessary complexity of multiple remotes controlling multiple devices, Logitech's patented Smart State Technology makes it easy! Control your HDTV, adjust aspect ratios, or change sound modes - there are no complicated macros to program. Just press an on-screen activity icon and Harmony does the rest. The Harmony 1000's sleek shape and brushed aluminum surfaces will look right at home as the centerpiece of your digital living room. One remote is all you'll need to control even the most complex home entertainment systems. And when used together with a Harmony RF Wireless Extender (sold separately), you can further reduce clutter by placing your components out of sight. Since the remote can transmit both infrared and radio frequency commands, you can control equipment inside a cabinet or even in the next room. minimize

5 Star Review Way Better than I expected

Strengths:

I really got rid of 6 complex remotes ! I put them in a cabinet and NONE of them have been needed since. That is a first !

Weaknesses:

NONE

Posted Jan 26, 2008 - I am blown away. I had an old Harmony 659 that was shaped in the traditional way with regular buttons. It was good to me, but my wife could never figure it out- mostly because even with all the programming you had to do a lot of 'next' and scrolling to find the one button you were looking for. It was easier to just use the orig. remote with that older model. HOWEVER- now with this 1000 remote- I actually put away ALL my remotes- and after 2 weeks, my wife and children can do ALL tasks across my TV, PVR, DVD, DVDR/VCR, and Receiver-including surround sound settings, TV aspect ratio's, muting, PVR TV show recording, PVR playback - ALL with one remote. The user interface on this is excellent. I was really surprised how much easier it is for non techies to understand the touch screen. I set it up within 60 min's including tweaks and was amazed at how improved it is over the earlier models. One impressive thing: my cable PVR box- has special buttons on it "A", "B" and "C"- and each is a specific color and shape. This Haromony- automatically displayed the colors and shapes of these buttons on the touchscreen during set up- with no extra work from me. It did similar things for every remote I have. There was NO BUTTON that was not accessible on the touchscreen (albeit some of them took a couple of screens to get to). And the buttons most use were all easily visible. (you can also cusomize the speailty button layouts.) This was expensive to me- but 6th ave had the best price around- , but well worth every penny- to have a wife who can use the system without frustration.

5 Star Review Love the Harmony 1000!

Strengths:

LCD touchscreen, ease of programming, ease of use.

Weaknesses:

Tough to access infrequently used buttons.

Posted 1 year ago - I bought this controller mostly to make life easier for my wife and it has, but I unexpectedly fell in love with it too! It looks awesome, everyone comments on it when they see it and I got a great deal on it with PriceGrabber. I'll never go back to multiple remotes again!

4 Star Review Logitech Harmony 1000

Strengths:

Sleek design, multi-functionality, simple set-up

Weaknesses:

Touch screen not always easy to use

Posted Dec 5, 2007 - This remote is nice for those wanting a cool gadget to brag about. It looks very nice and doesn't look as big as it does in the pictures. The setup is very easy. It didn't take me more than 20 minutes to setup my AV receiver, HD cable box, HDTV, and DVD player. The only downside is that I find myself having to tap the screen more than once since it's not as sensitive as I want it to be. Also you need to navigate through many menu options in order to get to certain functions. I like the fact that you can put your own pictures onto the remote as a screensaver as well as have a slideshow of your own pictures. The remote acts as somewhat of a digital picture frame in that sense.

2 Star ReviewWhen I bought the device I didn't think about the ...

Strengths:

Flexible interface, has potential

Weaknesses:

No tactile feedback on touch screen (see comments) Poor LED output power (see comments) Logitech removed the XML customization from their website - you have to open a case to change the "under the hood" features and tunings.

Posted Jul 2, 2007 - When I bought the device I didn't think about the fact that with a classic remote there is a lot of tactile feedback - the button pattern is quickly memorized and you can snatch it up and begin selecting functions without ever looking at the remote. I took this for granted. With the touch screen, you have nearly no tactile feedback, so you constantly have to take your eyes off the monitor to look at what button you're pressing/menu you're on, etc. This kind of sucks. Even worse, the output power of the LEDs isn't even close to that of the other Harmony remotes, so I find that I have to hold the device so that the LEDs are pointed directly at my equipment. When I'm holding it in that fashion, I cannot see the screen at all. What would be "natural" is if one could hold the device like a book (so one can see the screen straight on) and then select functions - but if you do that, the LEDs don't have enough output to change the functions on your devices. As a result, you have to look at the screen, position your finger over a function, then tilt the remote down and point it at devices before pressing the button. It's extremely awkward and unpleasant. IMHO, they expect you to buy the RF repeater, which would solve this problem. But if that's what they wanted, why bother putting the IR LEDs in there in the first place? I'm very frustrated by it. Another problem is that Logitech removed the XML customization options from the Harmony web set up program. I had done a lot of "under the hood" tuning of my older Harmonys, and I can no longer do so myself - I have to open a case to make such changes (and rely on the Logitech support engineers to get them right). Also, it's difficult to create macros that do more than one function with a single button press - for example, my receiver allows me to control a second zone, but on the receiver remote I have to push "ZONE 2" and then push "POWER" to enable the second zone, then "ZONE 2" and then the volume controls to control the volume, etc. I'd like to turn these into single button presses, but I cannot. So as a result (of mainly the LED power and tactile feedback issues), this thing is gathering dust and I'm using my old Harmony remote. :(

4 Star Review Stylish remote, easy to setup, very good macro features.

Strengths:

Bright and clear LCD touch screen, easy computer setup

Weaknesses:

Price

Posted Jul 4, 2007 - The computer setup wasn't as bad as I had expected. It took a while to figure out the complexity of my home theater system, but it wasn't nearly as bad as using my older Sony remote. This product worked great on my MacBook Pro. The only negative I can think about is that it doesn't work 100% on all my components out of the box, rather about 90%.

3 Star Review Harmony 1000 - Great concept but surprisingly too focused on touch screen

Strengths:

Best value in the programable screen category of remotes combined with an on-line based system database that is pretty bullet proof in accommodating every conceivable combination of vendor equipment.

Weaknesses:

The touchscreen approach is surprisingly less satisfactory than the tactile pattern of a well designed button pattern. I find the right side button far more pleasing in function than the screen.

Posted Mar 30, 2008 - I was surprised to find that the most enjoyable part of the unit was the standard button set on the right rather than the screen. Had I to do it over, I believe I would have chosen the better combination of small, selective programing screen with a greater fixed button pattern for most operations. This is opposite of expectations but certainly the reality after using this format. I also found the icon symbology for the favorite channel setup virtually impossible to get programed and have yet to crack the process.

4 Star Review Not Perfect ... But One Very Cool and Highly Capable Remote

Strengths:

- Convenient Activity Based Interface - Easy to Program - RF Capability

Weaknesses:

- Annoying high-pitched tone when first placed on Charger - Commands are a little slow to execute from time to time - A little on the expensive side

Posted Mar 7, 2008 - With at least 4 remotes each in both our family room and Master Bedroom, I finally decided delve into the world of universal remotes. After a thorough online shopping expedition, I decided to purchase the Harmony 1000. It's a great remote and for the money I paid, less than $300, I feel it was a great value. Programming it was a breeze, and activity-based controls allow convenient one-touch transitions from television to DVDs and back again. While I love the remote, I will a note a couple of issues. 1) The touch screen takes a little getting used to. As other reviewers have noted, there is no tactile feedback, and "no look" clicking is difficult at best. 2) The "Devices" section of the remote, which emulates the factory remotes for your A/V equipment is not particularly user-friendly. For even the simplest of remotes, the buttons are laid out on multiple pages and as seldom as normal operations require using this section, it can be a challenge to locate the specific function you need. 3) The remote's firmware/software bogs down from time to time and causes some irritating delays. In spite of these issues, I am more than satisfied with the purchase and would recommend this remote to anyone interested in getting rid of excess clutter int he family room.

3 Star Review One remote to rule them all??

Strengths:

It's cool looking ; touch-screen

Weaknesses:

Requires two-handed operation; base-station does not provide enough support; lame technical support; expensive

Posted Jun 26, 2007 - I was really hoping to like this little device. I bought it online, without really playing with it. had I done that, I might have spent my money elsewhere, or gone with a cheaper unit. I already own a Harmony 880, so was familiar with the interface and how to program it. However, I had more problems this time around. I kept on having driver issues. Apparently, you cannot just download the software, you actually need to use the included CD! This is contrary to what I've experienced before, as I would always want the latest-and-greatest, versus the older bundled software. There is a disclaimer about this, but it just doesn't make sense!! I had another issue with controlling my TV-Lift. The manufacturer was on their list, as was the model number. However, there were not codes in their database. It took Logitech over a week for them to get back to me. When I responded, it took another 3-4 days. They promise phone support, but I was on hold for over an hour before giving up. This is simply unacceptable for a $350 device!! I guess they have grown enough in popularlity, but in order to keep profit margins up, have not staffed appropriately. Lame! I don't like how this device requires two hands to operate it. It's too bulky to typically use only one hand, as you need to support it. Also, since the charging station is so flimsy, you cannot reliably use it as a support base. In addition, they still have problems achieving good contacts for charging. If you want a device to show off to your neighbors for that WOW factor, this is it! If you want something that is more practical, look elsewhere.

4 Star Review harmony 1000

Strengths:

ease of use, removes remote clutter, touch screen, easy to see

Weaknesses:

Lots of questions on remote (is this OK

Posted Apr 12, 2008 - I have lots of friends using my system, and with the pile of remotes, and a surround sound receiver, iPod, TV, and DVD player, it was getting confusing what settings were needed. With the harmony 1000, it is intuitive, and so far everyone has been able to pick it up and use it. It is pricey, but look for deals. At one point it was $179 with a special on-line coupon.

5 Star Review Absolutely Harmonious

Strengths:

one touch watching, listening or playing in a sleek and stylish design that isnt too pricey

Weaknesses:

Not true RF - NEED Extender NOT ZWAVE compatable as advertised.

Posted Jan 15, 2008 - Key points here for those looking; 1. rechargeable 2. cradle 3. large LCD touch screen 4. intelligent backlighting features and of course, the basics 5. one touch home theater automation Starting with the latter, anyone who has ever had a universal controller not only appreciates the “ONE” remote, but looks for the “ONE” button to turn everything on or off. The H1000 is simply the flagship of all Logitech’s remotes that perform one button functions. With the exception of that, all these were absent on my 680, so this was an upgrade long time coming. It is silly for me to reiterate what everyone has praised about this unit, but rather tell you my experience with the device and software. Setup was fairly easy for me because I had already owned the Logitech 680. All my settings were transferred to the new H1000 seamlessly. Having owned the 680 for several years, I was very comfortable with software already and found the newer version quite simplified and streamlined. I had read a lot of reviews on people having issues with it, but patience is a virtue. I had also read a post somewhere of someone having issues with a AV receiver and two zones. This may have been the case having a newer model receiver since updating the software and re-adding mine, recognized it was 2-zone capable. In any case, everything is customizable and keys are easily ‘learned.’ The only gripe I have about this unit is it doesn’t integrate with Windows Media Center like the older controller, but even that isn’t a big deal. I use a BT keyboard and mouse for that aspect of the HTPC anyway. I also posted a review on the RF EXT, which is essentially necessary for the complete RF/Z-wave ‘package’ if you want to run multiple AV equipment from another area in your home. The H1000, although advertised as RF and Z-wave, is not! With the extender however you can control virtually all your equipment, just not Z-wave devices. I also got the Z-wave lamp module FREE with a Logitech promo, that interestingly, cant work but advertised as such. I put my RF extender about 12 feet away on a far wall facing the AV cabinet rather than in it and everything works harmoniously.

4 Star Review Harmoney

Strengths:

Universal remote control, touch screen, controls everything (Even RF with the given extension)

Weaknesses:

Price, shape

Posted Dec 2, 2007 - If you are looking for the best universal remote control that will control everything... well almost everything, this is the way to go. Touch screen, easy to set up, and controlling everything will eliminate all the extra remotes you have sitting around. This will be your ultimate remote control.

5 Star Review One piece of technology !!!

Strengths:

Can control almost any device

Weaknesses:

Price, needs more programing control of the buttons (size, shapes, names).

Posted Jun 3, 2007 - This is an excellent universal remote control, bit pricy and tricky to program, but once you spent time and get to know how it works, is wonderfull. I can control my entirely home theatre (HD TV, Receiver, Ipod, Tivo, HD DishNetwok, DVD/VCR combo, 5 disc CD player, HD DVD ). In a normal use (all days, 2 hours, except for the weekends that I used it more) the battery life is 6 days, which is not bad at all. Logitech should improve the programing control of the buttons, so we can have a better remote.

5 Star Review Excellent remote

Strengths:

Touchscreen, Multiple Options

Weaknesses:

Some devices do not respond as well when manually programmed

Posted May 28, 2007 - This is an excellent device if you are looking for a touchscreen remote that can handle hundreds of devices. It is easy to setup and to program. The tactile buttons on the lightweight remote are responsive. The only setback is when you try to manually program some devices. I had trouble trying to setup my automatic fan. My other 10 devices worked great with the remote. If you are a novice like me when it comes to electronics, this is a remote that is worth buying.
