Strengths:Tivo interface (not new directv dvr brand), silver/metallic body color, 80 hours recording, fast response time, finds and records shows relatively fast
Weaknesses:None. Need to be replaced when Directv DVR service replaces Directv Tivo in 2007
Posted Jan 18, 2006 - I am replacing my old Hughes 35 hour Directv Tivo that is about 5 years old. I'm getting some technical issues, so I'm replacing it now but it has served me well! This R10 model is the latest (and last) Directv TIVO dvr box ("DirecTivo") before Directv rolls out their own dvr hardware and service later in 2005. The Tivo and directv contract expires in 2007. After that, I think all Tivo users must switch to directv's dvr hardware and service. I hope the new equipment will perform as good or better than Tivo's. I guess we'll see.
I had a choice to getting the new Directv DVR (the R15 model is available now) but decided to get this R10 DVR with Tivo since I LOVE Tivo's (proven) interface and service. Since I have been using the Hughes DirecTivo for 5 years, I can only tell you what's different with this new R10 box. First, this model looks much better than the old Hughes model. It has a nice metallic silver finish and is more "boxy." It responds (refreshes) faster to channel changes, show searches, and "on the fly" recording. Also a bonus is the 80 hours of recording time and 2 tuners to record 2 shows at once. All other functions and features are about the same.
Even though the Directv DVR R15 model is available now, I still recommend this Tivo box because of Tivo's reputation and ease of use. I'm willing to stick with the Tivo service until it's replaced (and forced to change it).
