Strengths:

HDTV Satellite/cable/off-air combo, dot-matrix display, DVI output, caller ID, 5 components universal remote

Weaknesses:

No RF output, Bright standby display, DVI/HDCP only.

Posted Sep 2, 2004 - I purchased this HDTV receiver to replace my dated Panasonic one. This receiver is a three-in-one unit. It will display satellite (directv only), cable, and off-air channels when scanned, with a choice of DVI, component, S-Video, and composite outputs. No RF output however. The audio portion can be chosen from digital (optical/coax) or analog via RCA outputs. All the video and audio ouputs remain active regradless of which one you're using, giving you numerous connectivity options. For example you can be watching an HD channel using the DVI connection while recording the same show with a VCR using composite/S-Video inputs without switching the resolution. The same can be accomplished with the audio section. This unit has a very bright green colored dot-matrix display, which shows the current channel, resolution, and audio format. But it will remain almost as annoyingly bright when turned off (standby) showing the current time. Lastly, the DVI output of this receiver is an HDPC (copy protected), which it's only compatible with TV sets of the same input. However, I recently learned that the there will be adapters to make it compatible with the newer HDMI tv sets. Because of the numerous connectivity options, and operational flexibilty, I strongly recommend this unit.

Strengths:

Front panel display; Resolution display indicator; Wide array of inputs; Component Switching

Weaknesses:

Lack of info on "optional" RF Remote; lack of backlit keys on IR remote

Posted Sep 15, 2004 - This is a great option if your cabling is limited; you can use one component cable set and provide signal from both your DVD and HD Sat Receiver to your HDTV. The price make its weaknesses easy to forget.

Strengths:

Built-in scaler to upconvert any video input signal from RCA, s-video or component video ports to 720p/1080i video output through the RGB or DVI output connectors

Weaknesses:

Bright display cannot be dimmed

Posted Jun 28, 2005 - Unlike the first generation Samsung SIR-T165 and the second generation Samsung SIR-T351 HDTV tuner, the third generation SIR-TS360 responds much faster when changing channels. In addition, it has DirectTV capability and a wonderful built-in scaler to upconvert any video input signal from RCA, S-video or component video ports to 720p/1080i video output signal at the RGB or DVI ports. A comparable equivalent external scaler alone could cost more than twice the price of the SIR-TS360. Connecting a regular progressive scan DVD player through the component video input of SIR-TS360, I was able to obtain upconverted video picture quality better than an expensive stand alone progressive scan DVD player with built-in upconverter made by Toshiba. Not to mention the DirectTV reception feature, the SIR-TS360 performs very well as an external HDTV tuner and video upconverter. You also have the option to watch video in various formats such as pillow box, full screen, zoom1, zoom2 and panaroma on a 16:9 display monitor. Although Samsung has recently came out with the fourth generation HDTV tuner SIR-T451 similar to the SIR-T351 without the video upconverter feature, I would strongly recommend the SIR-TS360 for watching DVDs beyond HDTV until the new HD-DVD or Blue-ray DVD players are standardized and reach the consumer market.

Strengths:

Price, fanless operation, RF remote capability, caller ID,

Weaknesses:

caller ID, slow channel switching, built in games.

Posted Sep 22, 2004 - This receiver has just about every single video and audio connection available. You don't have to have a DirecTv account to use this unit as an OTA HDTV receiver, although some dealers will want you to sign some kind of agreement. It has a cool and informative front display which I did not mind the brightness, I use it as a nite-lite. There were very few things I disliked about this unit, but I most mention the following, the caller ID stays on the screen way too long, asking you to acknowledge it. Also when you switch from an HD to a SD channel, it takes about 4 seconds to complete the process. It works a lot quicker when switching channels of the same resolution. Last thing, Samsung should have never included the games it comes with, they're not exactly XBOX caliber. Overall, a very good HDTV receiver.

1 Star Review Samsung SIR -TS360

Strengths:

bright display

Weaknesses:

Does not offer OTA/cable set up, does not change channel, no possible way to set the clock, will not play DVDs through component video. Where else do I begin?

Posted Aug 24, 2006 - I bought this unit used, only with a remote(which has done more than the unit). This unit not being hooked-up to DIRECTV HD has yet to produce a picture except a limited menu(DIRETV HD only). It will tell you it failed to pick up a satellite signal, get transponder power ratings, + signal strengths which mean nothing when it is not connected to a satellite. No where does it offer Off-The-Air pickups. I hooked it up driectly from a JVC DVD progressive scan player wiht component video. No picture, sound, or anything. Just a blank screen. When I first hooked it up it ticked like a time-bomb for hours. When I woke up the next day it finally had something on the display. I can to between component and RGB, standby or no standby. That is it. Will do nothing else. A traditional Samsung produt.
