Posted Jun 28, 2005 - Unlike the first generation Samsung SIR-T165 and the second generation Samsung SIR-T351 HDTV tuner, the third generation SIR-TS360 responds much faster when changing channels. In addition, it has DirectTV capability and a wonderful built-in scaler to upconvert any video input signal from RCA, S-video or component video ports to 720p/1080i video output signal at the RGB or DVI ports. A comparable equivalent external scaler alone could cost more than twice the price of the SIR-TS360. Connecting a regular progressive scan DVD player through the component video input of SIR-TS360, I was able to obtain upconverted video picture quality better than an expensive stand alone progressive scan DVD player with built-in upconverter made by Toshiba. Not to mention the DirectTV reception feature, the SIR-TS360 performs very well as an external HDTV tuner and video upconverter. You also have the option to watch video in various formats such as pillow box, full screen, zoom1, zoom2 and panaroma on a 16:9 display monitor. Although Samsung has recently came out with the fourth generation HDTV tuner SIR-T451 similar to the SIR-T351 without the video upconverter feature, I would strongly recommend the SIR-TS360 for watching DVDs beyond HDTV until the new HD-DVD or Blue-ray DVD players are standardized and reach the consumer market.
