Strengths:

Easy to create PDF files, photo editing and editing of text

Posted Mar 17, 2005 - I bought this scanner primarily to scan text to edit with Microsoft Word. The scanner comes with ABBYY FineReader OCR software. The scanner operates by scanning the page and then seamlessly integrating it with the ABBYY software to convert it from the scanned image into text that you can edit with Word. The website claims something like 99% accuracy and I can attest to this fact. I have to make minimal changes to the completed project but it saves me countless hours. A+++ product!

5 Star Review ScanMaker s400 super buy for your money

Strengths:

4800x9600 dpi, easy to set up and use, instruction manual easy to follow, all button at the front for easy access, copies direct to printer, scans at reasonable speed (faster than my old scanner)

Weaknesses:

have not found any weaknesses yet... a real upgrade from my old scanner

Posted Aug 10, 2005 - AAA+ Product / company For the price range I think you get a lot for your money.. It comes with some fantastic software. On my old scanner I had to make sure scanner was on before I booted up my PC or it would not find it. With the s400 just push the ON button and within 60 sec. you are up and running and ready to do anything from scan, copy, e-mail, fax or OCR a text document. Just push the corresponding button for the job you want it to do. I am elated with it. I love the fact that the lid lifts off or raises so you can scan books. Every few days I am learning more of what it can do. For the average user I think it is fantastic. For the professional / office user you might want to step up a little to a scanner where you could feed several pages through it but that is only my humble opinion.

4 Star Review ScanMaker s400 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths:

Easy install, hinged flatbed cover for ease in scanning books, is caplable of high resolution scans in Advanced options.

Weaknesses:

Photo Software isn't really a full program, more like a trial version. Install software BEFORE YOU PLUG IN SCANNER!! Advanced options are needed for high resolution needs.

2 Star Review Still Waiting!!!

Strengths:

Ease of use, High resolution & Price.

Weaknesses:

Scanning speed, Lightlid filmstrip adapter.

Posted Dec 16, 2005 - This is the first scanner I have owned. I made this purchase mainly to scan old negative filmstrips. I find the scan speed to be slooooow! At 600 dpi resolution it takes almost 7 minutes to scan a four picture filmstrip. At 2400 dpi, which is recommended for negatives, you can clean the house, wax the car, go shopping at the mall and still not be done with the scan. On the other hand, the scan quality seems to be pretty good. The lightlid filmstrip adapter is kind of cheap looking. I've had problems with it moving around during scans. If the light inside it ever burns out I think the whole unit will have to be replaced...I'll bet that's costly!

4 Star Review Scanmaker s400 revisited.

Strengths:

Great image quality, great web support, user friendly with advanced adjustment menus.

Weaknesses:

A bit slow, but for me this is not a problem as I use it for artsy projects, not boiler room deadlines.

Posted 4 months ago - I have a new passion called lomography. Basically this is the art of using low tech cameras, like my (Diana f+) to capture everyday life or objects in a surreal or dreamlike image. The camera uses 120 size film, and sometimes light leaks or strange color accidents add to the mystique of the image. Anyway, I use this Lightlid 35 plus to scan my negatives and it works great. It is not made for 120 size film, so I simply position the strip between two normal 35mm slides and it works just fine. Love this scanner!

5 Star Review Looks like a winner...

Strengths:

Great Price, good features, ample software, easy set up and a very classy looking product.

Weaknesses:

None...yet.

Posted Jan 10, 2007 - I purchased this on the basis of both reviews and price. Honestly I'm a technological idiot, but the set up was simple right out of the box. Be sure to load software FIRST - that seems to be important. Then just plug it in and go. My unit is quiet, seems fast, and allows a dummy like myself to quickly preview and/or view results and modify if required. I wanted this scanner to transfer photos and documents to my PC to pass on the PDF or JPG files to others. It made flawless copies of some ancient sepia tone family photos, and copies of rare color catalog pages appear as clear as the originals. There is more potential for advanced adjustments of transmitted scans on the machine itself than I will probably ever need to use, but you do not have to mess with that unless you enjoy playing with that sort of stuff, or are more clever than I am, but still a nice feature. The spectrum of the software included is all you will probably ever need to play with completed scans on your PC. Again, the price was very attractive and ordering from merchant "Newegg" (my first buy from them) was very fast, instantly documented, then quickly followed with emailed tracking info for the purchase - which was received in only 3 days! I will definitely re-post later if any problems should turn up with this product, but initially this seems very solidly built and surprisingly quiet, with only seconds of warm up time needed any time it is switched on.

5 Star Review Excellent scanner!

Strengths:

Easy to use, excellent color balance, has a gray scale scan mode, software is quite flexible and allows custom modifications to the scan process.

Weaknesses:

User manual must be downloaded online, but otherwise no complaints

Posted Dec 10, 2006 - I bought this scanner based on recommendations in PriceGrabber, and haven't been a bit displeased with any operation. I use it to scan artwork and photos, both for use as is and also for modification in Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I can't say how pleased I am with the color balance, gray scale adjustments, and ease of use. For $100 you can't beat it!

4 Star Review ScanMaker s400 Flatbed Scanner

Strengths:

Good construction. Quick and high-quality scanning.

Weaknesses:

ScanWizard 5 software has crashed multiple times on my new Mac computer.

Posted Sep 2, 2006 - The scanner operates mechanically very well. The control buttons on the scanner are difficult for me to see. The only downside to the scanner is the compatibilty of the software provided by Microtek with my new iMac.
