The feature-rich CanoScan 8400F Color Image Scanner lets you produce superb high-speed scans of a wide range of materials. Now, you can easily scan valuable photos, important documents, books, old slides and even medium-format film. This powerful scanner can provide super-fast image transfers to your computer, allowing you to see previews in approximately 2 seconds. For added convenience, four easy buttons - Scan, Copy, E-Mail and PDF - automate the scanning process, so your projects can get done more quickly. Just position your original, select the use for the image, and in seconds its ready to go.Canon's Hyper CCD III System features a 3200 dpi sensor offering greater light sensitivity with smaller pixels for capturing more image detail, as compared to 2400 dpi scanners. Built-in retouching technology handles the most common problems found with old negatives and slides. It can remove much of the dust and scratches that may appear on your originals. It can also revive images that have faded over time. Plus, Backlight Correction Technology works to adjust image exposure, and Grain Correction will help smooth out grainy images. minimize

Strengths:

Very good images

Weaknesses:

Posted Feb 22, 2005 - I have to agree with the other reviewers that gave this one five stars. It is constructed well compared to other scanners I have used, and the images look very good. It has an excellent film scanner attachment as well. I really like the four programmable buttons on the scanner. You can scan to email, a printer, a PDF file, image program or reprogram them as you wish. It comes with excellent software that is very intuitive. I have scanned hundreds of documents in the past month, and I am very satisfied.

Strengths:

Solid scanner with an excellent driver and imaging properties. Fast, quiet, integrates will with other software. Feels and looks well made. Easy install and no issues.

Weaknesses:

Application software is OK for many but not sufficient for more advanced designers. It is very basic (I did not expect more) but works well within other more advanced applications.

Posted Apr 29, 2006 - Being a more advanced/technical user, I was concerned that the capture (driver) applet was too simple/limited. But, it has a simple/fast and advanced/detailed mode operation to select from. So I am very pleased and would recommend it to basic or advanced users.

Strengths:

lots of features, scan to pdf, high resolution, film negative & slide scanner, nice design/colors & blue power LED! Photoshop Elements 2.0 bundled for those without full Photoshop. Price below $200.

Weaknesses:

none

Posted Dec 25, 2004 - I am a photoshop user. I was looking for a replacement scanner. I have a broken HP scanner that is 6 or so years old. Was looking for a replacement after it stopped working. Was unimpressed by the local big computer store's HP scanners. Came looking to good ol pricegrabber and did a sort by ratings. These reviews were very helpful. Was looking to get a scanner for archiving old photos and documents. This seemed like it had all the features. I got it shipped from CDW. Came next day fast shipping (I live in IL 4 hrs from warehouse which helps). I was a like little kid at Christmas, litteraly. Easy setup. Install all the software (except arcsoft which is unnecessary as I own photoshop and photoshop album). It does come with photoshop elements 2.0 which is a novice version with the basic features of photoshop for editing photos. Photos: The scanner is easy to use with the photoshop File--> Import--> Canoscan 8400F. Great built-in scratch & dust remover, auto tone, fade correction, etc with cleans up and gets majority of specs out on scan. Very very fast scans at low resolution as expected. It is slow at 1200 or 1600 dpi on photos because they are huge resolution and hundreds of megabytes in size. Get at least 512mb ram. I have 1GB and had no trouble with hi-res scans. Those with older machines must realize they may not be able to handle such hi resolution scanning without an upgrade. Scan-to-text: I have played with the OCR tool and it has very nice advanced features to fully customize layout and scanning areas for scan-to-text. It will then allow you to proof and spelling correct in it's own text editor. Then you can output to unformatted text, text document, spreadsheet, etc. PDF: PDF files come out great. You can set it to scan and launch in adobe reader. You can scan single or multiple pages into one pdf file. I am excited to archive some old documents and backup on DVD. I have already done several. COPY: Nice feature. Automatically scans and sends to printer with touch of a button. watch out for margins and where you place 8.5x11 document. if your printer can't print in the first 1/4 inch or so then place the document down a bit to get it all in the copy. copy of b&w docs comes out crisp and clean with no greying. thinner paper might do this. it sometimes helps to place an extra sheet of plain white paper behind to avoid reflection and text bleed-thru. Customize Buttons: A nice feature is that you can customize the function of each button and specify what actions and what applications launch when pressed. (e.g. when I hit scan button it launches photoshop) This is by far the best scanner I have owned and has all the features I wanted and scans come out beautiful. I thought I would give something back since pricegrabber has come thru for me over the years. Hope this review was helpful.

Strengths:

Good Clear Scans, Easy to use film and slide scanning. High quality images, scan to PDF files

Weaknesses:

Unit is bigger than many of the smaller scanners on the market.

Posted Sep 22, 2004 - I have used my Canon 8400f for several days now and am extrememly pleased with this purchase. I got it to replace an older canon scanner and have not been disappointed. The scanner and software are very easy to use and make great quality scans out of the box. The slide and negative attachments make it really easy to make great scans from your older photo collections. The dust and scratch removal features also make for really clear scans. I really love the ability to scan directly into PDF format. Overall, I love this scanner!

Strengths:

Ability to scan at high resolution, and scan up to 12 negatives at once.

Weaknesses:

none that I am aware of

Posted Dec 23, 2004 - I am very content with this scanner. I purchased it primarily to archive all of my old 35mm negatives. I found the process very easy and the quality very high. I read elsewhere that the adapters to hold the negatives were not user friendly. I found them to be quite to the contrary. I like the ability to scan 12 negatives at once. For the money, this has to be one of the best scanners out there, at least for the slide and negative scanning ability. I haven't yet tried out the other scanning modes, but if it can scan negatives this good, the rest has to be child's play.

Weaknesses:

Posted Sep 23, 2004 - Absolutely the easiest and best scanner I have ever used. My hat is off to the Canon people for their incredible design and performance at a very reasonable price.. Installs easily. Comes with a multitude of accessory programs. Truly a quality product.

4 Star ReviewI bought this scanner to replace my Canon LiDe 30 ...

Strengths:

Fast scans at 300dpi, scans of photos look great, quiet, buttons on front for quick scans and copies, good directions for setup, good online troubleshooting help from Canon

Weaknesses:

Scans of negatives are sometimes too bright or too dark, large size of scanner

Posted Jan 31, 2005 - I bought this scanner to replace my Canon LiDe 30 scanner. I wanted a scanner that was faster then my old one and did negatives too. I am planning on scanning my old boxes of family photos and negatives, so I need a scanner that is fast and can also scan the old negatives that I find. I have just started trying out the CanoScan 8400F. I have tried scanning in a few old photos at 300dpi, using the ArcSoft program that is included. So far all my photos are turning out great. This scanner is much faster then my old one. It takes about 15 seconds to scan three photos. After photos are scanned in the program crops them into three separate photos. I have not tried to touch up the photos yet, but I want to try these features in the near future. I have tried to scan in some old and new negatives. This is the first time I have ever tried to do this. The old negatives came out very dark and the new ones came out way too bright. I will have to see if I can make some adjustment to fix these problems. I also noticed a lot of dust on these scans. I am plainning on geting a blower brush to help solve this problem. Also, when I first tried scanning some negatives I got an error message. I went to the Canon website for help and quickly found the answer to my problem. I plan on going back to find out how to make my negative scans look better.

Strengths:

Very quite when scanning, lightweight, high speed scanning, scans to create PDF files, scans, copies, print and emails documents. USB 2.0 high speed interface.

Weaknesses:

N/A

Posted Oct 29, 2004 - I would highly recommend the Canon CanoScan 8400F to anyone. Scanning color photos, it does an excellent job, and reproduces sharp color images from the photos. I like the idea that you can copy documents and they print immediately after scanning. The Canon CanoScan 8400F is such a quite scanner compared to the one I replaced this scanner with, which was a Microtek. The Microtek was noisy, came with terrible software, and was very heavy. Canon has made this scanner very fast and lightweight. There are several softwares that come with this scanner and they all are very easy to use. I like that it scans and produces PDF files. PDF files, what a great idea! This is my first seeing this option within a scanner. For the price, you can't get a more excellent product. The size is great for a home office. I'm very pleased with my new scanner. I feel I made a wise decision in purchasing this product. I would purchase again from Canon.

Strengths:

High quality Film, Slides, Paper Scanning Photoshop Elements supports JPEG2000!

Weaknesses:

Auto-crop does always crop correctly Speed for high res is low IMO Photoshop Elements doesn't support 48-bit color

Posted Jan 14, 2005 - I've never had another scanner to compair this one to, but I'm impressed. My mother wanted a scanner to backup documents and pictures she has found in her geneology research. There are a lot of family photos on slides, and I wanted to scan them because we can't find a bulb for our ancient projector. It would be nice if it would scan a little faster, 3 to 4 minutes a frame, but we'll only have to do it once since it's scanning at near film quality.

Strengths:

Ease of use. Excellent start-up guide. Very easy to set-up.

Weaknesses:

I wish it would scan faster. Still not bad for a consumer device.

Strengths:

Canon 8400F Flatbed Scanner: easy setup, great quality of scanned images and documents and easy to use software.

Weaknesses:

Essentially not a weakness but on/off switch would be better located to front of unit for easy access.

Posted Mar 19, 2005 - I bought as a replacement scanner for an HP 3570c unit. Scans images and/or text documents faster and with better clarity. Thought I was having trouble installing software until I realized that I had not turned unit on. On/Off switch would be better located in fron for ease of use of scanner.

Strengths:

Able to handle full page scans, and negatives. Photoshop Elements 2.0 included. Relatively quiet and quick.

Weaknesses:

Large footprint on desk

Posted Jan 15, 2005 - I do not have much personal experience with scanners. But compared to ones I have used, this one is quick. Time for lamp to warm-up is noticeable, but not very long at all. Scans come out in great quality and included software can remember your preferences for future scanning. Optical Recognition software works well too.

Strengths:

Good software package, excellent scan quality, easy setup.

Weaknesses:

Somewhat difficult to use.

Posted Nov 29, 2004 - One thing I liked about an epson scanner I tried is that it's "auto" mode would allow you to scan at high resolution. The Canon software included only allows up to 600dpi in auto mode. And, more annoying, when you select a higher dpi, it will scan the entire page instead of just the picture on your scanner. Granted, I've only had this scanner for two weeks, so maybe there's a way to manipulate the software or perhaps use one of the other programs included to get around this. But that is along the lines of other reviews I've read about this scanner -- it takes a little bit of work to figure out how to get it to do what you want.

Strengths:

o Quick installation o Worked first time! Awesome copy & scan features Fine scans

Weaknesses:

o A little bulky o Software is a little complicated (so many switches) o Would like to make multiple printed copies using COPY button o A little slow

Posted Feb 17, 2005 - I've had the scanner for several weeks now, and so far I love it! It does everything I wanted, and then some. My previous UMAX scanner was about four years old, and it was getting locked up too frequently. This new scanner installed easily and worked first time! Linked perfectly with adobe photoshop elements. I just love the COPY button! I effectively have a photo-copier, albeat a little slow. And it worked with my printer first time. Bravo! I have yet to do any scans of film negatives (one of the reasons I upgraded), but have yet to try this. However, if it works anything like the other scanner features, I will be happy! The only downside (thus far) is that it is a tad slow. When you press the buttons on the scanner, you have to hold them for a few seconds, until you get some acknowledgement that the button press was understood.
