3 Star Review Good for Photo, Bad for Books

Strengths:

Fast startup (no delay), Fast scanning (it IS 7 sec at 300 dpi), great quality. Adobe Photoshop elements is a great Plus

Weaknesses:

Bad ergonomics - the buttons are on the lid, so cannot scan keeping lid open. Canon software is not great.

Posted Sep 24, 2007 - For scanning photos and negatives, this is a great scanner - it has great quality, very fast scans, and almost no startup time, as it uses white LED. The included Photoshop Element alone can account for half its price. It is the latest version 5.0 for Windows and 4.0 for Mac. So if you are scanning photo from inside photoshop, you will be at ease. However, I bought this to scan books due to its high speed. I was planning to use the multi button pdf scanning feature. After buying it, I found the buttons are on the lid, and while scanning with the lid open, they are impossible to reach, unlike canon's other LiDE scanner models, where they are on the lower unit. I had to resort to clicking the mouse button with one hand, while holding the thick book over the scanner with other, the exact thing I wanted to avoid and went for this scanner with exclusive multi-page scanning button. The Canon Software for scanning, MP Navigator Ex, is good but lacks some basic features that people expect. For one, there is no contrast (or brightness as they label) control on the scanning function, although it is present in the print and copy functions. Hence if you want to make a scan lighter or darker you cannot use the one-click scans, and have to resort to manual scans. I found the default levels too low for most documents and for copy, I had to set it 25% or 50% darker to make the copy readable. However, no such option is available in pdf or scan functions and they end up to be too light. Overall, if you are planning to scan a lot of photo and negative, and like to use Photoshop Elements and have not bought it yet, this looks like a great investment. However if you are like me and planning to scan books faster, this is not the one to select, although it does scan fast!

5 Star Review 8800f on Windows VISTA

Strengths:

EASY Install for base drivers, click and scan ease, includes adaptors for film!

Weaknesses:

Omni Page OCR software included with the scanner is not as easy to install for some reason

Posted Oct 8, 2007 - I Love this scanner, FAST, great scans, Very well built unit. Includes film adaptors, I currently am still unable to install some of the supplied software: Omni page OCR that comes with the scanner does not want to install on my Windows Vista machine. Not a big deal to me since I do not use OCR but if this is why you are buying this scanner you might want to get that question answered before buying. otherwise I would recommended this scanner to all my friends and family.

4 Star Review Works better than expected

Strengths:

+ Can scan at very high resolutions. + Is easy to use. + Comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements, a valuable software package in and of itself.

Weaknesses:

+ After scanning a number of negatives a white border starts to appear on the scanned images. Appears to be a driver problem. You have to reboot the computer to get rid of the white border.

Posted Nov 28, 2007 - The scanner worked better than I expected. Be sure to download the latest drivers from the Canon website. There appears to be a problem with the driver/software that causes a white border to appear around the negatives. This problem only shows up after I scan about 10 sheets of negatives. Rebooting the computer solves the problem. Adobe Photoshop Elements contains a lot of tools to enhance your photo, e.g. removing scratches, brightening up a dark photo

4 Star Review Great scanner, but needed to swap first unit

Strengths:

Very fast (uses a white LED lamp). Very good quality scans. Impressed with the scans produced from both photos and film. Can scan multiple medium format negatives at once. Less expensive than V500!

Weaknesses:

The first unit that I received needed to be replaced because there was lint/dirt on the inside glass. What a hassle! The software is also a bit cludgey.

Posted Nov 4, 2007 - I compared the output of the unit against its primary competitor (the Espon V500). While I liked the Epson software better, the quality of the scans on the 8800F appeared better to me. That's the most important thing, so I'm sticking with the Canon 8800F, which is also less costly. Note the Epson has a higher optical resolution, but in practice I preferred the Canon's scans.

5 Star Review Canon all the way

Strengths:

Fast, worth the hype, SHARP 35mm.

Weaknesses:

Size-read further...

Posted Jan 20, 2008 - This thing is all that you hear it is. The only problem is the size, but it delivers with large sized scans. Very lean piece of equipment for the size, so it delivers. Made me realize how scratched my negatives were. Does a good job of cleaning them up though. It won\'t lie, so if the film is bad, it can only do so much and not look fake. I have been looking at film scanners for a couple of years now, mainly Nikon. I am a Canon man and glad I stayed the path.

5 Star Review Excellent Scanner

Strengths:

Extremely fast, LED technology, Zero warm-up time, high quality scans

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Mar 21, 2008 - When I purchased a new computer I found that my old scanner was not compatible with the newer operating system. I researched what was on the market and found this model was the replacement for another Canon that one multiple editor's choice awards from respected publications. As soon as I could find one, I grabbed it. I never regretted it. This Canon gives new meaning to the word fast. It uses LED lighting as opposed to a bulb, as tradition scanners have used. For this reason, there is no warm-up time and it is ready to go when you are. The internal mechanisms are also very fast. It is able to do high quality scans in a fraction of the time it took my former high-end scanner to do. The bundled software is decent as well. It includes drivers and applications for both PC and Mac. My system is a Mac Pro and I run Windows Vista as well as OS X with this scanner. It offers the ability of taking paper content direct to PDF files as well. Overall this scanner is a winner. I am a pretty picky person and the image and text quality if provides are respectable.

5 Star Review Canon 8800F Rocks!

Strengths:

Quick warm up time, Quality Scans, Ease of Use, & Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 included!

Weaknesses:

None so far

Posted May 27, 2008 - My old scanner would not work with my Xp PC. I did a lot of research on Epson and Canon to decide which scanner would work best to digitize my 35mm slides and negatives. Based on the price, features and reviews, I decided to go with the Canon. I have scanned hundreds of slides and pictures so far and I am very pleased with the results. The slide guide works great and allows up to 4 slides at a time. I preview the slides (photos or negatives), make a few adjustments for fading, scratches, etc., select scan, and presto, digital pictures! I love it.

4 Star Review Great scanner but hard to use software

Strengths:

Very fast, high-quality scans, free Photoshop elements

Weaknesses:

MP Navigator Software (for scanning) not user-friendly

Posted 1 year ago - I bought this scanner mainly for photo, negative and slide scanning. It does all of this very well. However, it took a while to figure out the software. Two 4X6 photos are scanned in about 15 seconds at 300 dpi. Negatives are scanned in about one minute each at 1200 dpi, at 2400 dpi it takes about two and a half minutes each. It is very convenient to load 12 negatives and scan them all in one shot. The negative loading tray works quite well. Of course, scanning at 2400 dpi, 12 negatives will need about 30 minutes. But, 1200 dpi should be enough to get good 4X6 prints. Negative scans look better than 4X6 photo scans. A Black&White scan needs to be made brighter in PhotoShop elements before getting a good printout. Same while using the copy function (brightness should be increased). All in all, an excellent scanner. I am giving it 4 stars only because the MP Navigator software and the manual could have been better. If you wish to do all your scanning from Photoshop elements, this may not matter.

Sleek design, easy to use and setup

Weaknesses:

Too many programs associated with teh scanner, I have 7-8 new icons of which I certainly don't need all of

Posted 1 year ago - Its a great scanner, works nicely, good quality. Scans both film and prints. Film: 35mm, and medium format. It's a very good price for a good quality scanner, highly rated by Consumer Reports as well.
