Strengths: Works well. Uninstall of 2004 version went smoothly.
Weakness: Live Update for Systemworks plus Firewall has never worked for us. I do it manually.
Been using both 2004 and 2005 versions - so total ~15months. I've no substantial complaints. It's simple to configure. That may not sound like a ringing endorsement. I can't say anymore; it works like it should. I know there are people who never use Symantec or would never use McAfee.

TopStrengths: The best part is the deals you get on this firewall product. For the price its not bad.
Weakness: Slows down the PC, sometimes hangs during automatic updates.
Overall a good firewall for the price, especially if purchased with good deals. The only major drawback that I found was that it slows down the PC a lot. I recommend you to buy it.....

TopStrengths: It has similar user interface like any other Norton software, so you will get used to it very quickly.
Weakness: It will freeze your internet connection while loading NFP2005 load itself.
I don't know how it really works to protect your computer, but it does ask you to allow/deny internet connection for most software or services and generates a black/white list. So in this way, you will clearly see what software use internet. But it's not that good if you are a common PC user --- this kind of question really confuses you, because you don't know the name of good program or real hacker software. I think Symantec must do this more intelligently.

TopStrengths: It works just fine as it declaraed
Weakness: It has a little conflict with Microsoft window sp2.
I got my machine all crashed right after I install this software
on it, which it is running window xp sp2 version.
there are some conflicts between this software and window.

TopEasy stallation. Installation speed is ok, not too fast, but that's what I expected. So far so good. Never used other versions of firewall. Kindof lack comparison but since I have been a Norton user for a long time and still satisfactory with their products, I figure no need to try other versions.

I bought this firewall software about three months ago. I think I made a good decision buying it. It’s very easy to install and convenient to use. And I never had any problem with it so far. With its automatic updates, I feel protected from attackers.

TopStrengths: This software prevents hackers from intruding and stealing personal information.
Weakness: The only weakness this software would have is users lack of use to utilize the effective tool.
If you have ever been invaded by hackers damaging and infecting your system with worms and/or viruses as I have, you would want the best protection available to prevent this from re-occurring. With the Norton Personal Firewall 2005, I can have piece of mind, knowing that my PC is being protected from the most notorious form of computer crime out there.

TopStrengths: Easy installation, works well.
Firewall is an essential piece of software for anyone these days and this one works well with Windows XP. Installation is fairly straightforward and the software prompts/warns the user when there is any attempt to establish a connection to the computer. Standard software like Internet Explorer and Outlook Express can be easily pre-configured to work normally. Settings for other programs can be programmed for future use after the first time when the user is prompted. Overall i am satisfied with the performance of the software.

I've used McAfee firewall and so far this one seems more powerful. However, it's also a little bit more complicated to use. All those popup notifications (for programs accessing the internet) can be annoying; I notice that McAfee didn't have much of this. But for free after rebate, it's a good bargain.

TopStrengths: Very effective and using options, it makes very essential tool in work place network. Also good for home with kids to controll certain IP's.
Weakness: Conflict with non-symantec antivirus or system work softwares.
Effective fireall protection. Online auto updates and very good technical support. Worth if you but Norton Antivirus and systemworks bundle as it is one stop solution. Rebates are available to get those cheaper in case you have McAfee loaded.

You can get it for free if you buy Turbotax or Taxcut and own previous Norton/Macfee software.
It is very professional compared windows firewall within XP SP2. You can choose the security level to meet your need. You can open/close a lot of ports of your computer and have a fully control.
But if you want to share your computer's file or enable remote access, it will be not easy to determine which port should be open. By default, it keeps your computer from any remote access.
Finally, like other software, you will pay $30/hour to talk to a living customer representative if the problem is your own. Their so-called 24/7 customer service is only an automatic service.

Symantec Norton Personal Firewall 2005
Strengths: easy to install, takes over firewall function from windows xp, was free after rebates
Weakness: uses up significant system resources
I got the Norton Personal Firewall along with the Norton Antivirus that I also bought. This was for a new laptop that I wanted to make sure was protected from outside threats.
Installing from the CD was very easy. I just popped in the CD and it automatically initiated the install procedure. When it initially started, it asked if it could take over firewall functions from windows xp. Then for each program you use that tried to access the internet, it asks you if it should allow that program the access or not.
During the first few days of use, this happens quite a lot, but once it's learned which programs you want to have access to the internet, and which ones you don't, everything gets much smoother. I feel more secure now that the likelihood is less for unkown programs getting into my system and then sending my informaion out.
Best of all, this product was free after mail in rebates when I got it. Definitely a plus!
