5 Star Review Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens

Strengths:

Image Quality is magnificent

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Aug 11, 2005 - This lens makes me look like a good photographer. The images are incredibly sharp. There is only minimal distortion at the widest angles, and really no distortion from 15mm (35mm SLR equivalent of 24mm)on. At the widest angle it is unbelievable how you can shoot whole buildings without even having to go across the street. When combined with my speedlite 580EX, I can shoot at 10mm and get whole rooms without vignetting. While this lens is rather expensive, I feel it is money well spent.

5 Star Review EF-S 10-22mm

Strengths:

sharp - even wide-opened, wide enough for almost everything (10mm!), fast and precise ring-usm, optical performance.

Weaknesses:

its bit pricy, but quality can't be really cheap anyway.

Posted Jul 22, 2006 - Its optical quality is everything what you can expect from good wide-angle zoom (very few CA@wide-opened, reasonable distortions, sharp etc) I have used this lens with 20D for crowd shots in busy exhibition shows and general views and I can only praise the AF speed, accuracy. Only thing I am missing is weather sealing, but what can we do if canon policy is so. You can see many shots made with this lens (all wide-angle shots) in my web gallery: www.meltsas.com...

4 Star Review Very good

Strengths:

Sharp, maybe the sharpest ultra-wide solution for 1.6x DSLR so far

Weaknesses:

Expensive, especially that you need buy hood and lens porch seperately

Posted Oct 1, 2005 - Overall a very good ultra-wide lense, better than Tamron 11-18mm, but you may want to look at Sigma 10-20mm or Tokina 12-24mm before you make a decision

4 Star Review It is because of this lens that I upgraded from ...

Strengths:

o Great results & fun to use! o A perfect travel lens o Sharp as a tack

Weaknesses:

o Should have included some accessories

Posted Apr 21, 2005 - It is because of this lens that I upgraded from the Canon D60 to the Canon 20d! I was sorely missing out on wide-angle opportunities, thanks to the 1.6x crop factor on these DSLRs. My 28-135mm just wasn't cutting it for my typical travel photography. Alot of missed photo opportunities. I had considered the 16-35mm L glass, but this was too expensive and still wouldn't be wide enough. Plus, it would have too much overlap w/ my existing 28-135mm. So with the two new EF-S mounts, one could take two lenses on a travel adventure, and get quite a bit of range: 10-22mm & 17-85mm. First thing I noticed upon using this lens was that it was just plain fun to use! I loved the "distorted" results one could get at 10mm!! Plus, it was able to get "so much in the shot", without having to deal with digitally stitching together pictures later. I was in Belize, and captured whole Mayan ruins...with just one picture! Awesome! I'm not a photography geek, so I rarely notice many of the negative side-effects that others speak of. For my applications, this lens is perfect! Is it worth the money?? For me, maybe. I love how it opens up photo opportunities, but it is expensive...period. But I'm glad I have it, and have no regrets. But to someone more used to L-glass quality and price, they may be disappointed. Unfortunately, if you want to go truly wide, there currently are not that many other options! A knock to Canon is that at this price, they should have included the hood and lens carry bag. The Canon 70-200mm L f4 lens is less expensive, and includes these accessories. Come on Canon!! It is for this reason that I am only giving it 4/5 stars (basically a knock for value).

5 Star Review Only wide-angle solution for APS-C sized camera

Strengths:

Really wide! Product sharp photo with good color reproduction. Fast focusing. (Pseudo) Internal focusing. Flase is very well controlled.

Weaknesses:

Image is quite soft around the edges. Pricey.

Posted Nov 12, 2005 - For APS-C sensor digital camera, this is the only solution for ultra wide angle lens from Canon. I decided to go with it and I am very pleased. The lens has very decent built quality, with (I would call it) pesudo internal focusing. the front element is really moving but within the lens barrel, so if you put a filter on, it will be a single solid piece without any moving part from the outside. That will help protect the lens from dust and moisture as other "real" internal focusing lens. USM has decent speed, but not the fastest I have seen. Images produced are really sharp in the center at all aperture settings, the edges and borders are quite a bit soft. It produces great color and very good against flare. Last, and most importantly, it is really WIDE!

4 Star ReviewThe Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Len ...

Strengths:

compact and light, good sharpness

Weaknesses:

minor CA near edges, "L" price but build quality is less

Posted Jan 16, 2005 - The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Autofocus Lens is a good piece of equipment for the right camera owner. And that may be is greatest limitation. For owners of Canon 20Ds and Digital Rebels, this lens will let you go wide, very much like a 16-35mm on a full frame camera, but it won't fit any other camera. The optic quality is very good, my only complaint being minor chromatic aberration near the edges. Non-Canon lenses don't seem to compete but are cheaper. Light and easy to carry, the build quality is not the same as Canon's L series, but it is better than the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens. Bottom line - a good lens at a premium price, but maybe the only game in town for a 1.6x sensor.

5 Star Review A wonderful lens from Caon

Strengths:

superwide, sharp, contrasty, superfast focusing, construction quality

Weaknesses:

cost, ef-s mount

Posted Sep 24, 2005 - I am a nature photographer and with 1.6x crop factored bodies it was impossible for me to take the picture of wide skies and mountains. Finally Canon came to our rescue with 10-22 ef-s lens. This is the only lens from canon that carries special glass elements outside of professional L lenses. So far I am very happy with the picture quality. Like other wide angle lens it does suffer from distortion, but stopped down it's pretty decent. One gripe, even with such huge price tag, there is no hood included. Make sure to use a hood when using thins lens.

4 Star Review review for 10-22mm canon lens

Strengths:

Super wide. Fast focus. Sharp. Low distortion

Weaknesses:

Price. Hood is not included.

Posted Aug 15, 2005 - This lens is very sharp. It also has great build quality. USM focuses fast and quiet. Colour and saturation is great, although not as "wow" compared to my "L" lenses. For those of you who shoot wide, this is probably the best lens. Compared to Sigma, Tamron and Tokina, you get the Canon quality. In addition, Canon is giving you the 10mm, and I believe only Sigma really goes to 10mm

5 Star Review A MUST have for the 20D or Rebel XT owner

Strengths:

SUPER MEGA WIDE! If you have a 20D (like me), or an XT, you NEED a lens this wide, and this is your only real option.

Weaknesses:

It's an EF-S mount, so it can't be used on EF only cameras (90% of the canon cameras), including the 1Ds and the new Canon 5D. High cost for a non-L lens.

Posted Nov 29, 2005 - PROS: 10-22 with the 1.6 crop factor (multiply 10-22 by 1.6 to see the 35mm equivalent) is equivalent to the 16-35 lens on a Full Frame camera, but that lens costs over $1000. You get that kind of view and shooting ability for half the price!! Barrel distortion is minimal at the wide end, and is fun to play with. Besides, Photoshop CS2 can correct this now, if you don't like the result. CONS: The EF-S mount doesn't fit EF cameras! This means it will likely lose resale value more quickly, especially if Canon never makes an EF-S camera again. No lens hood or case is included, like you get for free with all Canon L lenses. I guess they didn't want an EF-S lens to be an L series, despite having almost the same quality. Despite the cons, you MUST have this lens if you have a 20D and want to shoot wide. There simply is no other option. GET IT! It's a blast to shoot with.

4 Star Review A good choice for superwide zoom users ONLY for Digital Rebel and 20D

Strengths:

Super wide zoom, and the distoration is indistinguishable until the focal length is shorter than 15. Fast focus, and acceptable photo quality, a bit poor compared with L-lens. Light weight.

Weaknesses:

The price is a bit high, compared with Tokina 12-24. EF-S mount.

Posted Aug 23, 2005 - This is a good choice for users need superwide zoom, and do not want pay higher price (Canon also offer 10mm L lens, and 20mm as well). The stuff REQUIRE you having Canon EOS Digital Rebel (XT) and EOS 20D because it is a EF-S mount, make sure before ordering. The lens does not come with a hood and it is quite difficult to get saparately, better go to eBay. Overall, it is a good product, though a bit expensive. Do not expect L lens picture quality.

5 Star Review lenses are very high quality with awesome picture quality

Strengths:

N/A

Weaknesses:

This is my first time to use professional lens so i need some time to learn how to use it and the price is expensive.

Posted Sep 5, 2005 - We current have canon 20D and now buy the EF-S 10-22 since my husband like shoot landscape mostly and don't think 17-40/L is wide enough for him. EF-S 10-22 is superb and unlike most consumer zoom, it has one UD glass element. It's quiet, fast and fairly light. Best of all, it shoots extremely sharp photos. This lens allows you to gather a lot into a photo and when shot at unsual angles you can get some very interesting images.

4 Star Review Awesome Lens!

Strengths:

Extremely Wide!

Weaknesses:

Possible vignetting wide open?

Posted Aug 15, 2005 - I've been really pleased with this lens. It is nice and wide and captures the 'entirety' of a scene in one shot. It's a 'necessary' lens if you want a complete kit. The only possible issue may be vignetting at the widest if you get a bad lens.

4 Star Review one of the best choice for Canon EOS 20D or Rebel XT

Strengths:

10-22mm is perfect for digital camera with 1.6 cropping factor. price is OK comparing to the 17-40mm L lens. and it is well-built and light weight.

Weaknesses:

10-22m is good for 1.6 cropping, but not for a full-frame digital camera

Posted Aug 29, 2005 - overall, it is the perfect match for peopel having Canon 20D or Rebel XT. Considering the 1.6 cropping factor, it is the wide-angle lens you need. Price is OK, well built, and light weight. however, with 5D is due the end of this year, the 10-22mm EF-S will be a waste of money if you are gonna upgrade to 5D.

5 Star Review Superb landscape.....

Strengths:

Picture quality is equl to L range

Weaknesses:

No lens protection provided with the lens.

Posted Dec 11, 2006 - I bought it recently and fully satisfied. Wonderful to play with. Hope this will be compatibe via an adapter to use in EF range camers in the future if this happens this will have a good value. Lens distotion is almost nil and may show in larger prints.

4 Star Review Excellent ultra wide zoom lens

Strengths:

10mm (angle), weight

Weaknesses:

Distortion is pretty heavy throughout the zoom, price, EF-S mount only

Posted May 24, 2007 - This is a pretty good ultra wide lens. Somewhat soft at 10mm but improves significantly at 14mm and beyond. Chromatic aberration is also higher then what I'm used to, but since it can be fixed in post-processing, I'm not considering it to be a major problem. As with other UWA lenses, 10-22 vignettes almost throughout the zoom, so I typically stop down to f/5.6 or f/8 to get better results. Build quality is rather average - not bad, but good either. A couple of interesting comparisons of Canon 10-22mm and other UWA lenses, including Sigma 10-20mm and Canon 17-55mm are available at slrlensreview.com. The site has a few other interesting articles.
