Strengths:Extremely Clean, Hefty(adds to innate IS aka Newton's First Law of Motion), Makes girls go "wow, that's a biiiiiig lens, wanna take my picture??", sharp wide, and stopped down, & Tones Biceps.
Weaknesses:Catches' attentions when in a den of thieves (like London, Paris, or Amsterdam[the weed is good at least]), makes weaklings complain about heft cuz they refuse to be fit.
Posted Aug 28, 2005 - I love this lens. As an everday lens for the street, Landscapes, or even studio photography working with models, it's difficult to beat. Unless you're looking for 600mm lenses w/ a 1.4x converter to shoot sports illustrated swimsuit edition this lens comes as a close second ^_o
You see, as a heavy lens, it will work out your arms and increase your stamina as you have added weight to your typical shooting setup. The more you take shots, and the longer you stay out daily, the better you'll feel. [Disclaimer: Not suggested as a complete replacement for a healthy diet and exercise, but it's better than sitting on your butt every day sipping soda instead of drinking water and eating carbs and meat instead of vegetables and fruit].
If you're a woman, guys will take you seriously as a photographer.
If you're a man, women will take you seriously as a photographer and ask for you number to shoot them at later dates. [No guaratees, I just know it works for me cuz I'm also fit as a fiddle(and for being in my 20's)].
Sex-based stereotypes aside, this lens will get a lot of notice from onlookers as well as undesirables such as thieves, muggers, and murderers. Not everybody likes their picture taken, and this can make you look like a spy or something. Shifty fellows will take offense and take your lens(along with your body[i mean lens body, unless you're a fit and trim lady]).
Also for this lens, Canon QC is great, about 80% of all 24-70mm F2.8L lens and dslr body combinations sold are ultra sharp, the rest might have difficulties. Also make sure your camera body is adjusted properly for back/front focus issues with regards to this lens and you should eliminate another 17% from the bunch. That last 3% will require a return.
If that Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG or Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di is looking good, be aware that with the Sigma, your odds of obtaining a good copy is 1/20, and with the Tamron, 1/10. Both still won't have the contrast and neutral color that the Canon L Lens possesses, but they are mighty cheaper.
Past experiences dictate that the Sigma and Tamron will be a smidge warmer(faint yellow cast).
Good luck, spend the extra dollar(if you can on a Canon 24-70mm F2.8L.
