Strengths: Varied units, good tactical gameplay
Weakness: Small maps, long load time
Let loose the hounds of war. Field Commander is a lot like a more realistic version of Advance Wars and some other tactical strategy games. Instead of little anime/cartoon figures, the units look more realistic running around on a 3-D backdrop. Like most games of this type, there are a ton of different units both land and air, with their own special abilities. Capture cities to learn money and churn out new units from your bases.
The single player campaign mode was well put together and as you advance you can unlock new 'divisions' which each have more specialized abilities. Some attack with greater power, some defend better, some move faster, etc and of course all have special powers they can use once the power meter fills up. The storyline has you completing missions in differing terrains with various units. To tell you the truth, I didn't pay much attention, choosing to fast forward through the voice actors reading out the missions and the videos. I was just happy to run around blowing things up.
If you like turn-based strategy games, field commander is an easy one to pick. The campaign mode is challenging without being too difficult and you can also make your own maps with a built-in editor. I really liked it and the episodic nature of the battles allowed me to play a mission here and a mission there whenever I had time.

TopStrengths: Turn-based strategy game taylor-made for the PSP
Weakness: Missions could use more variety
Field Commander is a military turn-based strategy game in the vein of the Advance Wars series. Like that game, you control various units in turn-based combat in an attempt to clear the mission parameters (which usually means destroying something). Unlike Advance Wars, the game has more realistic unit types in addition to a more realistic appearance. The single-player campaign is fairly robust and spans 30 missions. The game is packed with multiplayer modes, too, ranging from one where you swap the PSP with a friend, to local multiplayer, to multiplayer over the Internet, to "Transmit" mode where each player (located in separate places) can take a turn at their leisure and upload the turn data for the next player to download next time they turn the game on. This mode emulates the old "chess by mail" type gameplay that many will remember from their youth and is an intriguing concept for a video game.

TopStrengths: Online game play
Weakness: loading time
If you have played Nintendo's Advance Wars then you will have good idea of what this game is like. Like AW, this is a turn base strategy. You use your units to take over enemies cities or destroy them all. The addition of online game play adds a lot to the game. My only complain is the loading which can get annoying.

TopStrengths: Looks good. Quality strategy game.
Weakness: Somewhat easy. Long Load Times and lockups.
Field Commander is a great game strategy game for the PSP. The Gameplay is rich and the graphics are attractive. I was worried about viewing the combat field on the smaller PSP but it works well.
If anythin, the game is on the easy side. But I don't mind that since I suck as RTS's. :) Also there are some longish load times and a couple bugs. But overall it's onee of the better games on the PSP and highly reocmmended.

TopStrengths: Easy to learn. A turn-base stragegy game I am long waiting for.
Weakness: Too easy to beat. The AI is not smart enough.
This is the 2nd turn base strategy game I had ever play. I am a big fan of Romance of Three Kingdoms game series.
Surely this game will not disappoint many people who love strategy game. The weakness of this game is their simple AI design. Their moves are predictable and easy to beat.

TopStrengths: Easy to learn, good single player modes
Weakness: A bit easy, lock-ups
This is essentially Advance Wars from the Game Boy platform on the PSP with a little older target audience. It's so similar if you have this on the other system I don't see the point for buying this for the PSP. This game works if you are looking for strategy instead of fast-paced action. It's very easy to play in segments if you are travelling or will be interrupted. The campaign mode is a bit easy and doesn't represent much of a challenge (I haven't finished it though). So far I haven't been able to play multiplayer. I tried playing on-line, but I couldn't find any games available. It's probably better if you can find a live person to play instead of the somewhat limited AI. It has locked up on me a few times, but luckily it has only been after saves when it was loading a new mission.

TopStrengths: Easy to pick up, interesting story, variety of units
Weakness: weak AI, not very challenging if you take your time, not much strategy involved
Had this game for about a month now and been playing it on and off for a bit. My main concern about the game is that is too easy to beat, which in return makes the game too short. Levels are tiny and you can clear it in minutes. There isn't much strategy involved, basically the more units you have, the most likely you are to win. For a portable I guess it's not bad, if you are playing it once in a while, but if you are a hardcore gamer and play non stop this is not the game for you, you can finish the entire thing in 1 day. Online, like others commented on, it is very slow. If that's all you are interested in, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Overall it does the job of wasting time on bus, plane, car, etc...

TopStrengths: The game has depth and flexibility while remaining quick and fun
Weakness: Load times, Bugs, Freezes, Weak Online Support
A great game for the psp due to its range of modes and Command and Conquer like playing style. It thrilling single-player mode with storylines and FHMs and a robust set of multiplayer options. Loading time can hurt the games performance and the bugs cause occasional problems here and there, but that hardly gets in the way.

TopStrengths: Simple gameplay. Turn-based RTS. Online modes for different types of Multiplayer. Reasonable length campain mode.
Weakness: Bugs bugs bugs! Game locks up somewhat frequently. I have it lock on me I'd average to once for every 2 hours of gameplay. I'm running firmware 2.70. Lockups durring multiplayer games really bites
I spent $30 on this game last month. I wish I'd bought something else. Now that I see the release date on the game, I realise I haven't had it more than a month, if that. Please don't waste your money! Buy an EA Games game, not SoE! I bought it b'cause Sony PSP... Sony Online... I thought the game would kick butt, since Sony made both. WRONG!

The strategy genre has been an overlooked when it comes to the PSP. Sure, there are some other games that you "could" call a strategy game but none of them in the classic sense of the genre. When I think about a strategy game I usually think about controlling armies of assorted units and vehicles. Until recently nothing came close to filling in that gap on the PSP. Sure, portable gaming fans have...
