Valkyrie Profile

Strengths: Gameplot, battle system

Weakness: None

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is an enhanced port of the original Playstation video game "Valkyrie Profile". It features enhanced CG cut-scenes and remastered music.

The overall presentation of the game is excellent. It retains the great gameplay, unique battle system, graphics and characters. The new cut-scenes add some depth to the game.

It was great that Square Enix released VP Lenneth for the PSP system for those who couldn't get hold of the original VP which had a limited run and became overly expensive on the used market.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

Strengths: Story, graphics, gameplay

Weakness: Slow load times

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a worthy port of the original, hard-to-find Valkyrie Profile for Playstation. It has new, better graphics and new, engaging full motion video cut scenes.

The story is unique and great. Graphics is superb and visually stunning. The battle system and dungeons are among the best I have played on PSP. They work very well for this game.

The biggest drawback is the slower than usual load times.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a very well crafted game. I would recommend it whole heartedly.

One of the best Remake Rpg from ps1

Strengths: Great Graphics, great gameplay and Story

Weakness: a few Loading times

This games is a port from the Original Valkyrie Profile from PS1, with new graphics and new FMV movies and animations. This game packs good hours of gaming content. This game features the amazing combo link in the battle system and the game dungeons itself are awesome. You can recruit several characters during the game. The magic spells and special attacks are very awesome to watch. This game is a must have for the PSP system. Recommended for those hardcore RPG fans.

Profile of Valkyrie Lenneth Go!

Strengths: Unique plot, gameplay, and characters

Weakness: The best ending requires use of a strategy guide/FAQ.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is an excellent port of a hard-to-find PS1 game. VP deviates greatly from convention in terms of plot and gameplay, and everything, from the side-scrolling dungeons to the combo-based battles, works very well. The sheer amount of characters and customization is excellent as well. The biggest failure of the game is how getting the best ending essentially requires use of a strategy guide or FAQ.

Valkyrie Profile

Strengths: graphics, story

Weakness: load times, some slowdown, very involved

Graphics are excellent and the plot and storyline are engaging. Given that there are 3 difficulty levels and different ways to meet your objective of training and sending souls to Asgard, you could have a different result every time you play through. I’m anticipating holding onto this title for quite a while and enjoying it the whole time.

The only weak point of the game for me is the 2D platforming section. It’s pretty average when compared to the Castlevania, Metroid or Mario titles. However, it doesn’t detract from the overall fun. The load times are tolerable, but if you’re in a hurry, it may be a problem for some.

So if you have the patience to play through load times, long dialogue and multiple endings, I’d highly recommend this title. However, if you’re into just “get it over with”, you might want to shy away. This is what prevents this port from getting a full 5 stars from me.

Wow!

Strengths: Graphics, unique gameplay

Weakness: controls

This is an excellent game with great story, graphics and unique gameplay mechanics. Depending on how well I did I would get a different ending, plus it was very helpful to have difficulty settings as several of the boss battles where too difficult to finish.
Surprisingly since this is a port of the Playstation 1 game, the frame rate does slow down from time to time, plus some of the controls are hard to use with the limited PSP controls making the platforming element frustrating.

Overall an excellent game for any fantasy PSP game player.

A decent port for those who can't afford (or find)...

Strengths: Classic PSone Valkyrie Profile now at a reasonable price, new CGI cut-scenes, nonlinear game play, portable for the people

Weakness: No new game play additions, no graphical updates, long load times, occasional frame rate issues

With the PS2 release of Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, public interest in the original PSone Valkyrie Profile has reached a fever pitch. Unfortunately, the original game now runs $80 to $100 used (in varied conditions) on EBay, so many gamers on a budget have had trouble getting a copy.

Fortunately, the classic PSone title has now been ported to PSP as Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth with new computer generated cut-scenes. Besides the new cut-scenes, it's a straight port of the original, so anyone without access to the original should consider the PSP release.

Unfortunately, the PSone original wasn't a perfect game, and all of its problems have come over to PSP without being addressed. These include long load times, occasional frame rate issues and a complex inventory management system. If you have questions during play, the game doesn't give any hints, so you'll have to seek help elsewhere.

If you're a fan of Valkyrie Profile 2 and want to see where the series started, the PSP release of Lenneth is a much cheaper alternative to the original Valkyrie Profile on PSone. Lenneth is also arguably one of the better role-playing games available for PSP at this point, so genre fans may want to consider it as well.

A Haptic RPG that never loses its direction

Strengths: Engrossing and visually stunning environment; layered depth; esoteric mechanics that are easy to understand

Weakness: Cookie cutter RPG storyline makes it unmemorable; lacks character development

As remakes go, retellings can be bereft of the originality and freshness that came with the first edition. Instead of endless tinkering good "reimaginations" leverages the technical ability of present day hardware to give a vivid depiction of the original story. Valkyrie Profile is a representation of that ideal direction by making a world so vivid it induces senses beyond sight, evoking a quasi-tactile warm feeling that never departs until the game ends.

The old playstation 1 graphics this game was built on has been enhanced by the hardware potential of the PSP capabilities. Cutscenes and animations have been cleaned up, especially the full motion cinematic scenes. Anti-aliasing effects are utilized with great efficiency and the widescreen presentation makes the experience a visually stimulating experience. The game isn't purely based on the graphical upgrades. Battling and moving about in the town has been given a careful refinement that on first glance, daunting, but on multiple replays, flexible. By having a system that isn't on a fixed point, when the level gets progressively harder, the player is able to appreciate the smooth gameplay mechanics established in the earlier levels.

The discernable weaknesses is the fault of the original story. By not touching the story, the spirit of the same old thing is...still the same old thing. Something about saving the world. Something about banding together, pretty soon each plot convention runs together into different RPGs you've played or seen before. The insipid story also obscures all of the characters in this game because the plot does not allocate enough time as to why the characters exists in the game other than being a visual avatar for the player.

Although the weaknesses might sound disconcerting, it's not like this genre is immune from those weaknesses. Overlooking it is easy because of the excellent positive attributes. It's definitely a adventure you don't want to miss.

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth

Strengths: Hand down the best RPG for the PSP

Weakness: N/A

Valykrie Profile Lenneth is a remake of a Playstation 1 game that was released towards the end of the PS1's life and was overlooked by many (and then became an expensive collector's item). Thankfully Square Enix has brought the game back to life on the PSP and in the process provided the handheld with it's best RPG to date. While the game is fairly limited in scope compared to some newer RPG's, it features an excellent focus on the story that allows you just to play through it and enjoy it without worrying about exploring an overwhelming world full of time-consuming sidequests.

As the Valkyrie Lenneth you travel the world looking for newly departed souls to add to the army fighting for the future of the world in Asgard. You train these fighters with Lenneth during the game and send some to Asgard every so often. In the process you explore some towns and dungeons and participate in turn-based battles with a nice twist that keeps the action fresh. Each of your 4 characters is assigned to one of the PSP buttons and if you time the attacks right you can land combo hits that score more damage.

The game is notable in that it is not open-ended. Each visit to a town or dungeon takes up a specified number of time period and each chapter only consists of 24 total periods. Thus, you will find that the end of the game comes along after 20-30 hours of play, almost no matter how you have played the game in the mean time. This is actually quite refreshing as some RPG's consume a ton of time and it is nice, as a break, to be able to get through an entire story-based RPG without spending months playing it. However, for those wanting a longer game, there is replayability in the way you train and promote warriors, the different difficulty levels, and the 3 different possible endings. The PSP version features several new full-motion video cut scenes that help tie the game in both theme and visual style to the new Valkyrie Profile 2 game for the Playstation 2. This is definitely the best RPG available on the PSP and a must-have pickup for any RPG enthusiast.

A Perfect Port With Little Added Or Fixed

Strengths: 3 Endings, Non-linear

Weakness: No New Gameplay Added Over The Playstation Version, Minor Problems From The Playstation Version Retained

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a port of Valkyrie Profile on the Playstation. A great game that many didn't get to play due to a fairly limited press run and while it's still a great game it would have been nice if they added more for the PSP version of the game and fixed a few of the minor problems in the game in order to improve some minor issues and add in something fresh to make it more worth playing for gamers that have played though it on the Playstation.

The only added content in the game is music that was redone and a few new CGs, other then that nothing new was added, it would have been nice if they added some new gameplay elements such as new areas, characters and or items sort of like what Capcom did with the original Resident Evil on the GameCube.

I also think that they should have taken the time to fix some of the minor issue with the original Valkyrie Profile that they probably could have easily fixed like the slowdown during graphic intensive spells or the long loading times as I can't help but think that they could have worked these kinks out on the PSP's hardware if they wanted to take the time to do so.

All minor problems aside Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is still a great port of a classic Playstation RPG with a great turn based battle system with some real time combo elements and a non-linear structure to the game. You might want to pass on Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth if you've played it before unless your a diehard fan that would like to have a copy to play on the go. To RPG fans that haven't played it before I would highly recommend it as while it's a port of a Playstation game that is well over 5 years old now it is still one of the best RPGs on the PSP.

One of the best

Strengths: A decent port of one of if not the best PSX game

Weakness: Loading times

Valkyrie Profile is nothing short of a masterpiece. This port is great if you want to avoid the PSX price tag, but it's not quite as good as the original. The battle system, story and the fact that it's not like most other RPGs make it a great experience. No one should miss out on this game.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

Strengths: Story, Unique battle system

Weakness: Timed gameplay

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth brings one of the best role-playing games from the Playstation to the PSP. This is an excellent port and they've added a lot of nice cutscenes that weren't in the original game. The battle system and exploration are really what set this game apart from the rest. The exploration reminds me of a 2D platformer where, once you have selected the area, you then run and jump to find items and enemies to battle. The story is good and loosely based upon Norse mythology. If you missed out on playing this on the Playstation or just want a portable version of a great game, pick this one up.

Valkyrie Profile

Strengths: Graphics, gameplay, characters, cutscene

Weakness: loading

This rerelease is a godsend because of the ridiculously high prices of the original. This game includes cutscenes that were not in the original. However, all the great gameplay, graphics, and characters are present in this. The packaging art is fantastic, and the overall game is great. Pick this one up.

VP Lenneth

Strengths: Graphics, story, CG cutscenes

Weakness: load times, slowdown

This is one of the best RPGs on the PSP. It has a great storyline with great graphics. It includes spectacular cutscenes which is never on the previous for the PlayStation. If you missed it for the PS one, you should pick this up and catch up. The problems are the loading times and some slowdowns occur during the battle and going to a different area. There are three different difficulty settings for you to choose. The game is around twenty hours for the first play through. If you like RPGs and want to play on-the-go, pick this up. I recommend it.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

From 1997 to 1999, Japanese game developers flooded the PSone with as many RPGs as gamers could handle. There were many clones, variations, and offshoots trying to stand out in the crowd. Only a select few were able to post Final Fantasy-caliber sales figures. Even fewer were able to leave a lasting impression as strong as Square's beloved series. That changed the following year. Square, Enix,...
