Silent Hill Origins (PSP)
(1) Great graphics (2) This is Silent Hill that you can take with you
(1) The Silent Hill series has great atmosphere but the gameplay really needs some innovation
Posted Mar 2, 2008 - Silent Hill Origins for the PSP is a great portable game. Granted, you really need to be in a quiet, dark place to get into the game but once this is accomplished, you can really enjoy the setting, atmosphere and suspense. The team that created Silent Hill Origins (PSP) did a great job of recreating the classic Silent Hill feel, however, at this point I really feel like the gameplay needs some innovation. The morbid, but usually simple, puzzles that used to really add to the horror are pretty much done by-the-numbers here and I think their effectiveness has worn off since the series inception. The main character, Travis, also is not as interesting or memorable as previous characters - perhaps because his tie-in to the first game (PSX) keeps us locked into story we are already familiar with. All the other games in the series (even SH3, which was a follow-up to SH1) seemed further removed from the original games plot so that they could present a fresher experience. However, Silent Hill Origins is still very enjoyable for fans of the series and it has great graphics. I also appreciate that the monsters are more dangerous and frightening than the mostly lumbering foes in previous Silent Hills. Overall, a great PSP game and a must-have for series fans.
