Office Mac
Strengths: Files from Word exchange very well from mac to pc.
Weaknesses: Sometimes when working in excel the process takes too long.
I'm not sure as to why?
Summary: From the first time I loaded this program to my Mac everything has gone without one problem. In my work environment I use a pc but at home I use a Mac. This program has been very helpful in sharing files from work to home. I can only hope that Office 2008 will be even better.

Great overall
Strengths: Organized user interface. Offers features not available in Windows version. Great price with Academic edition.
Weaknesses: No Access. PowerPoint is slow to render preview images of slides.
Summary: The Student and Teacher Edition of Microsoft Office for Mac offers all the features of the Standard Edition at a much more reasonable price. It includes Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Also included is Microsoft Messenger which is available online at no charge. Plus, you get 3 product keys which allow you to install Office on up to 3 Macs in your household. The user interface is much more organized than the Windows version, using a separate Formatting Pallette window on the side that includes all the toolbar buttons organized into sections that would normally clutter the toolbar at the top of the window in Office for Windows. Another included feature not found in the Windows version is a built-in PDF converter. The only downsides would be the lack of Access as well as Office not being quite as responsive as you would expect, especially on a Mac. This is not a big problem, however. Overall, Office for Mac is a great software package for any Mac users who don't want to use the X11 version of Open Office or those who are tired of opening Word and PowerPoint files in iWork.

Not Bad!
Strengths: It seems to be well integrated and functional. The various apps work well together, for the most part, and it is the best professional office package to date.
Weaknesses: I think the apps are sluggish on intels and the templates made available from the disk are lame. Microsoft needs to build some wizards into student edition to help folks learn formating.
Summary: My only complaint is that it's not intel native (Universal) and I'm not sure about the upgrade path offered by microsoft. I use this package for school, and it works pretty well. It gets the job done if you take time to read the docs.

Student & Teacher Edition
Strengths: No difference between this version and the full retail version.
Weaknesses: Rosetta emulation on Intel Macs.
Summary: This is the most robust office suite you can get for your Mac. The only application lacking is a database. The 2008 version from Microsoft was released this year and besides additional features and suites, it is a fully Universal app; meaning it will run natively on your Intel Mac. This version runs in emulation on your Intel Mac. Since this is an end of life product from Microsoft, you may want to consider the newer 2008 edition for future enhancements and support from Microsoft.

Microsoft Office 2004 Student and Teacher, Great choice
Strengths: Improved a lot from OFFICE X. Solved the issue of transitional compatiblity between PC/MAC. Provide a lot more great features.
Weaknesses: Occupy a lot more system resource than its previous version
Summary: If you buy your Mac computer within two years, you can take advantage of this new version. It gives you a lot more freedoms and convenience to finish your work/study. Don't bother if you are still using your old machine, you will spend most of your time on waiting.
Great product with affortable price. I enjoy having it.

Good overall package
Strengths: Three licenses, reasonable cost, has the basics
Weaknesses: A few quirks when working cross-platform, a bit sluggish, some menus not very intuitive, not the full Office suite
Summary: This is still the best office package available for the Mac. It is a pretty good way to work on office documents and share with the PC world, but occasional cross-platform glitches can occur, though not detrimental. A few PC features are left out, but that\\\'s to be expected. Overall, a good package for a reasonable price. ***Note: I highly recommend buying this before Jan. 14, 2008 and redeeming the Super Suite Deal rebate which provides a free upgrade to the upcoming Office 2008 for Mac. See the Microsoft website for details.***

Still the best way to work with those poor people stuck with Windows
Strengths: Allows you to easily open and exchange files with Windows users. More intuitive for a Mac user than Office 2003 for Windows.
Weaknesses: No Microsoft Access database application. Reportedly a little slow on Intel machines.
Summary: Whether I like to admit it or not, it's still a Windows world. Having Microsoft Office, or a suite that easily exchanges Office files, at hand is a necessity. Microsoft office is the obvious choice, even though other suites from Apple and others can work with many Microsoft file formats, although sometimes not as fluidly or with as many features. This is a reduced-price way to get Office on your Mac without paying through the nose for the standard version, if you are eligible: this version is legally licensable by teachers and students only; hence the name, and the price. It is identical to the Standard version in other aspects.

excellent program to tide you over until office 2007
Strengths: it is ms office, it is has all 4 major programs (word, excel, powerpoint, access), you get 3 licenses
Weaknesses: it is not universal binary
Summary: this is a very nice release of office for many reasons. Some versions of office do not include powerpoint, but this contains all the major programs. not only that, but you get 3 licenses. This is very nice for those with a multi-computer household. having a legal copy for both a laptop and a desktop is very useful.
the major drawback of ms office is that it is not a "universal binary." When apple switched to intel chips in 2006, they created a new type of programming called "universal binary" that makes programs run faster on their new intel machines. Microsoft will not use this new type of programming until the next version of Office (office 2008). all this means is that office 2004 is not optimized for intel macs, but it is still 100% useable. most people won't notice the difference except when starting up the program.
i would whole-heartedly encourage the purchase of office 2004 until office 2008 comes out.

Good translation of the Word Processing / Spreadsheet standard
Strengths: - Microsoft Word and Excel work well
- Cost is fairly reasonable for this edition (3 licenses)
Weaknesses: - Entourage is noticeably different from Outlook
- Interface is a bit dated
Summary: If you've ever worked in any kind of office environment you're probably familiar with at least Microsoft Word documents, if not Excel spreadsheets. Office for Mac is a faithful translation of those standard productivity apps on Windows. Still more powerful than any other word processing or spreadsheet application for OSX (ie. iWork).
Word docs and Excel spreadsheets will probably continue to be the standard, so the Office apps will continue to be the most compatible for working with these file formats.
The interface is a bit dated but given that this product is from 2004 that's understandable.
This edition includes licenses for up to 3 computers which makes it a pretty good deal.

Lot left to be desired
Strengths: easy transition from mac to pc, formatting palette/toolkit can be vary helpful
Weaknesses: not written in universal binary (lag time), feels out-dated, powerpoint images do not always format correctly when opened in windows.
Summary: Office apps are essential for many of us who like to use macs at home but are required to use pcs at work, so buying this software allowed me the freedom of working at home. Bottom line...it gets the job done, but it isn't always pretty. The interface is similar to PC-based programs, so if you know how to use these programs, you can start right up. The fact that is isn't written in binary code is very annoying for us with Intel-based macs, and can cause significant lag time. I've found that certain images pasted in powerpoint slides will not show up on windows office 2004 powerpoint for some reason...I'm not sure what software is at fault in this case. The formatting palette is helpful to access tools quickly, but I know its even better in Office 2007. I would suggest (at this point) waiting for 2008 to roll around to obtain Office for Mac 2008, where many of these issues will be fixed.

Office 2004 for Mac
Strengths: Tons of features
Weaknesses: Not Intel native, not a significant upgrade from previous version of Office
Summary: Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac is a minor upgrade of Office 2001 for Mac in my opinion. I have used them both. Office 2004's look and feel is almost exactly like that of the 2001 version. I didn't notice any real changes to the menus or the palettes.
Office 2004 has some new hyped features that I think most users will never use. For example, Microsoft introduced a "Project Center" to manage all information related to a "Project". I tend to work on simple documents like a single spreadsheet or a Word document and I don't consider them to be projects that I have to manage with a "Project Center". Luckily this feature is optional.
One new feature that I like is that spreadsheets in Excel can now be worked on in "page layout" view like you can with Word documents. This is a handy view to work in when you know you will need to print the spreadsheet after you are finished with it. It gives you a WYSIWYG view of your spreadsheet as you are working on it.
Most people know (or should know) that Microsoft Office for the Mac is not the same as Microsoft Office for Windows. This is not a good thing for those who create Office documents on the Mac and hope to use or share them with the Windows version. Because of that, Microsoft introduced a compatibility checker for Office 2004 for Mac. Once you run a document through the compatibility checker, you can then make changes to the document so that it will be compatible with the Windows version.
Though Office 2004 will run on an Intel Mac, it only does so in emulation. Therefore there is going to be a speed hit if you run it on an Intel Mac. This was not a concern for me though since I use a PowerPC Mac. With a new release of Mac Office due in 2008, I recommend holding off on purchasing the 2004 version
