The D-Link 8-port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch (DGS-2208) provides an excellent solution for expanding your Gigabit network. Gigabit speed is 10 times quicker than 100Mbps Fast Ethernet connection, enabling you to save time transferring bandwidth-intensive music, video, photos, graphic, and data files. By sharing the Internet, your users can check e-mail, browse the web, chat with friends and family, and play online games using their own computer. To increase the functionality of your network, you can also add other Ethernet-enabled devices such as a print server, Network-Attached Storage (NAS), and Internet camera. minimize

4 Star Review good value 8 port switch

Strengths:

works fine, well packaged

Weaknesses:

N/A

Posted Sep 28, 2006 - This switch seems to work fine in 100BT and 1000BT modes (I haven't tested 10BT). It's a nice small size and is also easy to wall mount; the penalty for this is that it uses an external wall wart. I appreciated the 2 status LEDs for each port, although you have to get close to read them. Like all 1000BT switches, it runs hot, so you probably wouldn't want to stack something on top of it. It takes quite a while to boot up, but I guess most people will leave it on all the time.

5 Star Review As Easy As It Gets

Strengths:

Tiny, light-weight, Easy to Install

Weaknesses:

None.

Posted Dec 28, 2006 - I'm very much a network newbie. I bought a router about 10 months ago and now had to buy a switch to add a couple more PCs. I was pretty nervous because I know nothing about this stuff so I brought it home, plugged it into the router, and plugged a couple of PCs into it - it worked! It's really that easy! I did some experimenting by taking the router out of the network. All the PCs could still talk to each other but, even when I connected the modem, none could access the internet. When I put the router back in the network the internet was there for all of the PCs. Now my kids are all playing networked games and I can't get any chores done...

5 Star Review Easy to work with gigabit switch

Strengths:

It just works. Gigabit speeds, classy exterior, lightweight, has holes on the bottom for wall mounting.

Weaknesses:

Power adapter angled to the side so you have to plug it in at the end of your surge protector / power strip.

Posted May 24, 2007 - If you are building a simple gigabit network in your home or small business, this switch is for you. It simply works, just plug your router and computers into the back and you have a nice speedy network with internet connectivity at a relatively inexpensive price. So far I've had no problems with connectivity or speed between desktops. One nice touch is the different lights for varying speeds on each port. Another is that the wall-mounting angle they use is able to position the switch either horizontally or vertically. My only negative is that the power adapter was oddly shaped and angled toward the side so you can only plug it in at the ends of your surge protector / power strip. Overall I highly recommend this product. It's stable, very easy to work with, and it makes home networking much easier.

5 Star Review Handled our LAN party fine

Strengths:

Plenty of ports for a home network, good price

Weaknesses:

Not 16 ports:-) Haven't had any trouble with it so far.

Posted Dec 6, 2006 - I bought this primarily for a LAN party that I help organize that usually draws 40-50 PC gamers and runs for 24 hours. During that time the switch never caused any problems (which is more than I can say for some of our other equipment), and performance seemed in line with what you would expect from a gigabit switch. I've read that some people think it gets too hot, so I was curious to see how it would handle all 8 ports in constant use for over 24 hours straight, but I didn't notice that it got excessively warm. Some reviewers have also said that it doesn't properly handle a mixed 100/1000 environment, but we had one person with a 100 meg connection on and were still getting speeds well above 100 meg, so I don't believe that is a problem either. My only complaint would be that I need about half a dozen more and maybe a couple of 16 port switches so everyone can have gigabit next time.:-)

5 Star Review Good desktop gigabit switch

Strengths:

Good value (w/ rebates); easy setup; compact

Weaknesses:

Should be nine-ports; power-supply adapter could be smaller

Posted Jan 2, 2007 - I have gigabit ports on my computer and network attached storage device (NAS). I wanted my computer and the NAS to communicate as quickly as possible, to speedup backups. I stopped using the 4-port switch on my Linksys router, and am not using this instead. It worked out of the box, without any tweaking. My computer immediately reported a gigabit connection. I tested out a few large file copies, and they were indeed faster compared to using the 100MBit switch on my router. There is still a 100MBit connection to the internet, but that did not slow down the rest of my home network. My only knocks are that there should be 9-ports, not eight, as one gets used up to make the connection to the other network device (in my case, the router). When you buy the four-port router from D-Link, it actually has four usable ports. As a result, that device might actually be a better value. I also didn't like that the AC adapter was so bulky. But overall, I am quite happy with the product, and it worked as advertised.

5 Star Review Giga Great

Strengths:

Plug it in and go....

Weaknesses:

None

Posted May 14, 2007 - There isn't much else to say than plug in the power, plug in the ethernet cables and you are connected. I have a Gigabit LAN connection on my desktop and it was instantly connected at 1000mbp when I installed the switch. Running constant for one month, no restarts and no dropped connections. Supports jumbo and Qos, different LED colors for connection speed, but they are hard to see from a distance.

4 Star Review Sweet little switch

Strengths:

Relative small foot print, ease of setup and supports Jumbo frames.

Weaknesses:

Power supply is large.

Posted Apr 28, 2007 - Purchased the switch when I setup my 2 TB network attached storage (NAS). Jumbo frame support was paramount for large data (excess of 75 MB) transfers. Supports my 1 Gb systems as well as my older 100Mb connections without a problenm. Very easy to configure and looks nice with it's various colored status lights.

4 Star Review Great Switch

Strengths:

No set up, looks good, fast

Weaknesses:

no up-link port

Posted Apr 24, 2007 - This is a great switch. The switch works as advertised and it's a quick way to bring gigabit speeds to your network. I have had it working for about a week and have not found anything wrong with it. I especially like the way it looks it can easily fit in with other electronic components and will not leave the room it is placed in looking like a data center room. The only down side is that there is no up-link port so if you connect this to a router you have to use one of the 8 ports not a big deal but it might be something to consider. Overall this a great product.

4 Star Review Slick Switch

Strengths:

speed, smooth data transfer, asthetics,

Weaknesses:

slight off-balance once multiple cables plugged in, lack of positions

Posted Mar 6, 2007 - So far I've been very pleased with the switch. Its regular use is in a home network, with 3-5 PCs at any particular time. I use a D-link wireless router for DHCP, and sitting on top of each other they actually look pretty nice on my desk. It doesn't run as hot as a lot of other 8+ port switches, even when stacked with my router. I used it over the weekend for a LAN party as well, and it ran very smoothly. About half of us had gigabit cards; nobody could detect any lag even when daisy chained with another 8 port switch. The only complain I had was that it didn't balance well if I wanted to set it up on its side, and once you plugged in more than 2 or 3 cables its center of gravity shifted far enough back that the front would tilt up (until I stacked my router on it). Just a small annoyance that a lot of other boxes share, but I have had a few that for whatever reason seemed weighted differently to stay down even when all jacks were being used.

5 Star Review Solid 8-port Gigabit switch

Strengths:

Great performance for the price. Lights in front/cables in back make it easy to monitor and neatly run cables.

Weaknesses:

Mounting can be awkward (2 screws, weird angle)

Posted Feb 15, 2007 - I have been very impressed with the performace of this switch for HPC applications running on a cluster of 7 PCs. The applications put a huge load on the switch, but it handles it just fine. In fact, I've purchased 2 more of these switches.

4 Star Review DGS-2208 8-port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch

Strengths:

No installation problems, plug and play, Jumbo frames, had no problems with mixed speeds

Weaknesses:

neds clearance to keep from running hot

Posted Feb 2, 2007 - The switch was an easy setup. Plug and play. Unit was chained with two other switches without problems. This was in mixed environment. Unit is attractive-wires plug into back. This is an economic product that does its job.
