Posted Mar 23, 2007 - bought because it's silent, works as it should. To the people who comment about the higher per port price compared to the 8 port version: switching processing power is not LINEAR per port, but by the SQUARE. A rough approximation is (8*8)/(16*16) i.e. a 8 port switch requires only 25% of the processing power of a 16 port switch. Enclosure and other costs are more or less constant, but the electronics and power requirements are not. This is why you won't find switches above a certain number of ports, because the costs would either go up astronomically, or the processing power would exceed currently available technology.

Great

Strengths:

Small and quite. Great item. Best swtich for office use.

Weaknesses:

It gets a bit warm but that's to be expected since there isn't any fans.

Posted Apr 17, 2007 - I love this switch. Small, quite and very reliable. I haven't had any problems with it. It even supports jumbo frames. I have mine sitting on a shelf with two number 2 pencils under it for air flow. I haven't had a single probelm in the year that I've been using it.

Works Great

Strengths:

Easy to install and worked correctly right out of the box

Weaknesses:

Netgear 8-port GS108 costs less per port.

Posted Jan 17, 2007 - We purchased the GS116 to upgrade the Ethernet connections around a small server cluster from an older 10/100Mb Netgear switch. After the upgrade, server-to-server file transfers are faster, although I do not know by how much (it is less than 10X). The GS116, like other Netgear products, is housed in a metal enclosure, has an external power supply, and is wall-mountable. Indicator LEDs clearly show the status of each port. We paid about $180 after rebate at a big-box retail computer store. This is a little more than 2X the cost of the 8-port GS108, which was not available retail. I feel the 16-port should have cost a little less per port than the 8-port switch. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 only because of the price.

Neat little Gigabit switch

Strengths:

Works great, has no fan, wall mountable

Weaknesses:

To many extra $$ for the extra ports

Posted Feb 18, 2006 - I bought this switch for one specific reason, it is the only one I could find offering 16 Gigabit ports without annoying me with fan noise. Considering that 8 port Gigabit switches go for half the money or less it could be a little cheaper though.

Great Product, 16 Port and reliability.

Strengths:

16 Port, Gigabit Ethernet, Auto Sensing, Metal Casing, and Power supply is small, so it doesn't take up much room

Weaknesses:

Cost per port is high, espically compared to the 8 port gigabit switch.

Posted Mar 10, 2007 - Netgear hit a homerun with this product. I bought the 8 port switch first, which works wonderful, and looked up to see if Netgear had a 16-Port and low and behold, they did. This product is as solid as there 8 port switch. Netgear could have lower the cost a little, it more then double the cost per port. Also, the metal casing is solid, like something you would see with rack mounted devices. The best part I love is that its quiet, no fan. Just try to keep it in a vented area. Buy it and you won't be sorry.

Netgear GS116 Upgrade

Strengths:

Easy to install. Just plug it in.

Weaknesses:

A bit pricey.

Posted Feb 25, 2007 - I bought this switch to replace a Netgear modem and 5-port switch after I decided to run Cat5e ethernet wire to each of my kids rooms so they would stay off my computer. I also wanted a switch that would allow future connections if needed. Installation is a breeze and this switch DOES give gigabit speeds between computers on my home network. Unfortunately, Verizon FIOS is not this fast... yet. I have to knock it down one star because it is pricey (though less than most of its competitors) when compared to buying two separate 8-port switches.

Netgear 16-port gigabit ethernet switch

Strengths:

Quiet operation; just plain works; lifetime warranty

LED indicators need to be on front, versus next to cable plug-in; no rackmount kit

Posted Jun 4, 2008 - I was upgrading from two 8-port switches to a single 16-port. I was trying to reduce clutter and save some energy. Plus I'd get two extra ports, as one of the ports on each device is tied up connecting the two together. It worked like a champ first time! It does get hot, so keep this in mind by providing good ventilation. Netgear provides a lifetime warranty on this device, which is not documented here on pricegrabber. A couple of knocks, however. There is no rackmount kit. Perhaps this makes sense, as the thing is so compact, thus leaving a large gap on both sides. The one thing that does bug me is that all of the status lights are on the same side as the cable connection. FOr my setup, the cables are coming in the back of my cabinet, so if I plug them in with short and tidy cables, I cannot see any of the status lights as it's facing backwards! I'm sure this was a cost-cutting move, as the LEDs are integrated into the RJ-45 connector, but it's a major inconvenience when you are trying to debug connections.

Excellent unmanaged switch for a home/small business network with Gig-E nodes

Posted May 22, 2008 - I installed this switch as a replacement for an older NetGear 16-port 10/100 auto-sensing switch, which has been in trouble-free service for about 4 years. This device is used on a small network of 8 computers, 3 network-based printers, and a server. The server NIC supports Gigabit Ethernet and by installing this switch, I was able to significantly increase its throughput. The switch installed seamlessly picking up various network cards' speeds and supporting them without any problems. A few days later, I checked network cards statistics on the server and a few client PCs for any send/receive errors and found none. Overall, I am very happy with this device.

Nice little switch

Posted Sep 17, 2007 - I bought this switch because it was the least expensive 16-port gigabit switch that I could find. The fact that it was also the smallest, fastest (2 Gbps/port), quietest (no fan), and came from a major manufacturer was just gravy. Although I haven't really pushed the max throughput yet, I'm happy with it. I have mine sitting on a shelf in a rack, which works OK. It might be nice if Netgear included mounting ears that allowed this switch to be racked more easily, but this is good enough. The shelf gives me somewhere to set the power supply. It does run a little warm, as others have stated. The power supply is a "brick" that sits half way down the power cord. without this major heat generator inside the case, Netgear chose to eliminate a noisy fan from the case. Instead, they filled the case with vent slots and a heat sink that's about half the size of the case. As long as you can get decent air flow through those slots, cooling shouldn't be a problem. Mine runs warmer than I'd expect from a device with an internal fan, but it's not hot, and I don't have any concerns about its longevity. If it ever does get too hot, I may add my own small cooling fan to the to top of the case to draw air over the heat sink.

Yes the Jumbo frame support really works.

Strengths:

No fan. Silent. Jumbo frame support.

Weaknesses:

No VLANS, no SNMP. But that is not really expected for this price point.

Posted Jul 16, 2007 - One of the reasons I upgraded to this switch was it advertized Jumbo frame support. After swapping out the switch, I changed my adapter settings enable Jumbo 9014 frame size, and everything is working great.
