Anonymous - (March 23, 2007) bought because it's silent, works as it should. To the people who comment about the higher per port price compared to the 8 port version: switching processing power is not LINEAR per port, but by the SQUARE. A rough approximation is (8*8)/(16*16) i.e. a 8 port switch requires only 25% of the processing power of a 16 port switch. Enclosure and other costs are more or less constant, but the electronics and power requirements are not. This is why you won't find switches above a certain number of ports, because the costs would either go up astronomically, or the processing power would exceed currently available technology.

5 Star Review XE104 85 Mbps Wall-Plugged Ethernet Switch/Bridge

lauchman - (January 04, 2006) Ok, so here's the situation: I'm in a 4-story townhouse with one computer in the basement and one in my office on the 4th floor. The cable comes into the computer in the basement. Connection down there works great. To connect up in my office though, the cable company has two options: (1) install a wireless network or (2) put another cable modem on the line up on the 4th floor. Oh yeah, if I go the Option 2 route, the cable company charges me for TWO internet accounts each month. That option's out. So, I agree to let the cable company install a wireless network. They do, I go upstairs, sometimes the connection works, sometimes not. There's a kitchen with flourescent lights between the base

mgilbertphd - (November 18, 2004) This is a good switch. It's too bad the above review didn't realize that no crossover cable is needed. Most new switches and all (AFAIK) gigabit switches have autodetect ports that work with straight- or crossover cables automatically.

5 Star Review Cisco SLM2008 Switch works great

pgrosdidier - (08/30/2009) Very easy switch to manage. Good speed. Has full Qos and VLAN support. Can be powered using one of the ports. Does not have PoE to actually power any other devices.

3 Star Review Great but does not last too long

adlisita - (03/09/2009) I had this unit for over 3 years and as long as it worked it was great. I used it within a home office network with mixed 100 and 1Gbps connections. Computers running on 1Gbps they really transferred files at this speed (some do not understand that in some cases computers are not able to transfer at such a speed). In spite of some reviews, I do not think this unit has any fan inside, at least I don't hear or see any and I was quite wondering but it does get warm (I would not say hot). Using it 24/7 with 4 computers connected all the time plus the router it lasted 3 years. What bothered me was how it died because it was not a suddened death so until I understood what happens I bought 2 network cards. In other words, some connections died completely while others were still running at 10Mbs. I am not sure how to rate this product because as long as it worked it was great but eventually dies. From what I saw in other products reviews, nobody expects such a switch to last more than 2-3 years.

5 Star Review Netgear Gigabit Switches are Great!

mstexas - (02/11/2009) This Gigabit switch as well as the other Netgear Gigabit switches work great! I have replaced a few dozen Linksys Gigabit switches in the past year and will never buy Linksys again. They are dropping like flies! Thankfully I found these fantastic Netgear Gigabit switches. My customers and I thank you Netgear! If you want to see a picture of about 10 Linksys switches that I replaced over the last few weeks just click the link.
