Korg TR-88 for home studio use
Ease of use, USB midi connectivity, abundance of sounds and samples, very reasonable price
Requires updgrade for sampling card, a little heavy to move around for gigs
Posted Oct 25, 2007 - I recently purchased my TR-88 to use for recording in a home studio and for limited live performances with a band. I haven't bought a new synth/workstation in several years so was looking for one that had robust capabilities, was not too hard to use, and was reasonably priced. The TR-88 fit the bill. I've been able to get up and going on the keyboard with a minimal amount of spin-up time. The unit is a little heavy for moving around (approximately 53 lbs for 88 key model) but it is very well built and I feel comfortable transporting it without fear of it being too fragile. I may purchase a wheeled soft case at a future date for easier keyboard transport. The weighted hammer action of the keys provide a very piano-like feel. The sounds are full and there are ample selections of programs and combinations straight out of the box to get going immediately. From reading the manual, it seems straightfowrard to tweak or create unique programs and combis---but haven't given that a go just yet. Built in sequencer is simple to use with ample capacity for recording your music---and I like the SD storage card feature because it is simple, small, and very reliable. All in all, the TR-88 has fulfilled my requirements for a workstation that is user friendly, capable, and reasonably priced.
