3-way - 100W RMS / 250W PMPO - Magnetically Shielded - MPN: NS555
Strengths: Great looking and sound exceptional with great definition and no added tonality.
Weakness: none
Much nicer looking and higher build quality than I expected - very impressive - and the piano black finish is gorgeous. It actually reflects surrounding colors so much that it seems "less black" than a matte finish would. They're larger! than the pictures suggest. Think about this when comparing the larger NS-777. I'm glad I didn't go with those just simply because of the size. Wife would've killed me. Packed very well and arrived in perfect shape. Setup was little more than screwing on the feet and attaching the grill. They allow bi-wiring but I think that's a crock. Sound is exceptional with great definition, giving great location in theater application, and no added tonality. No boomy bass - it's tight and controlled and there when it's supposed to be. These are my new fronts and replaced my old Dynaco A-35 speakers which I've move to the rears. I was amazed how similar they sounded in terms of flatness (in the good sense) and absence of coloration. But the increased accuracy and definition of the NS-555 over the old Dynaco is very clear. It's hard to describe. It's not like any frequency was missing before (althought the NS-555 certainly has a wider response range), and it's not like the Dynaco sounded like mud, but the Yamaha is just able to clear it all up. It's like the difference between SD and HD - the image is still roughly the same in brightness and color, but so much richer and more defined in HD. Same thing with these speakers. The "image" is open and clear. I'm very satisfied and have already recommended these to a friend. No qualms or regrets.

TopStrengths: Performs and looks like a $1500 system!
Weakness: I will let you know when I find one.
I have been auditioning a ton of speaker systems over the last 6 months. Martin Logans, Polks, Athena, B&W. It's been fun and very informative. I live in a medium to small size condo so I didn't want anything that would overwhelm my space in my living room. I had been leaning toward a pair of $600 a piece Polks. I figured twelve hundred a pair wasn't going to get me in too much trouble with my wife. And then I was struck by lady luck herself. It was as if the speaker gods themselves blessed my ears with the new NS-555's. I hope that anyone who is looking to buy a pair of speakers anywhere in the $2000 price range, gives this speaker system a listen. Firstly, these speakers are built with a quality and finish that is found in no other speaker in this price range. The NS-555's are ready for bi-wiring, which I strongly reccomend...the difference is more than noticable. Banana plugs are also welcome. The black, piano style laquer finish is simply beautiful. The sound quality of these speakers is world class. I very very serious when I say this...the NS-555 are amazing on both 2 channel music and surround sound. Imaging and sounstaging are truly top notch. Bass is deep, rich and tight. Vocals are smooth and sultry. These are speakers that make you listen to all of your music over again. I don't know how Yamaha did it but my hat is off to them. The NS-555 are of the true bargains in all of Audio-Visual

They Get Better with Age
Strengths: Quality Construction and components. Able to remove cross-over bridging clips. Best 3-way speaker bang for buck sub-.5k.
Weakness: none
Brought these speakers on Amazon in Sept 2008 and have had them for over a year. Just wanted to provide a simple review regarding their performance. They are a very good entry level speaker (pair for under 0.5K) with great sonic balance lows, mids and highs. The bass response has developed over time, at first I thought a subwoofer would always be necessary, although a subwoofer has its role in a home theater system; these speakers will hold their own in a stereo setup. I have removed the cross-over bridging clips and run separate amps to the bass and treble sections of each speaker from my Yamaha RX-V663. Highly recommended speaker. The piano finish luster still shines and presents a nice complement to your entertainment center. One will be very pressed to find a 3-way speaker pair of this quality and price.
