Although the Gitzo G1325 tripod is not inexpensive and not all that light (4.5 lbs.), it is one heck of a tripod. In fact, it has become the de facto general use benchmark tripod for both serious photographic amateurs as well as bird watchers. The carbon fiber legs are solid as are the twist locking mechanisms, and the tripod reeks of quality and substance.
Columns are available at an additional cost, but should not be needed for most work as the 58.3 inch height is adequate for most uses. Also, the addition of a good quality head will add another few inches even before the camera body or viewing scope is attached.
If you do a lot of backpacking with a tripod, you may want to look for something less substantial and ligher.

This tripod is a winner
Strengths: Solid, quality, and stable
Weakness: A little heavy and fairly expensive
