Canopus ADVC100 Advance Digital Video Converter

Strengths: Superb quality video and sound synchronization

Weakness: Moderately expensive. No bundled software.

I preveiously owned a Dazzle Hollywood Bridge for converting analog to digital video. It worked reasonably well until it died. I then discovered Pinnacle bought out Dazzle and does not support the Hollywood Bridge. I now have an anchor for my toy boat.

The Canopus ADVC-100, while slightly more expensive than the Hollywood Bridge, is a very high quality piece of equipment. I do not expect Canopus to go out of business, and I am covered by a three year guarantee. The qualilty of video capture is even better than the Hollywood Bridge. The unit has worked perfectly, and my only regret is ever having purchased the Dazzle Hollywood Bridge.

Canopus ADVC100 Advance Digital Video Converter

Strengths: Easy to use and easy to set up.

Weakness: Doesn't seem to lose copy guard on DVD movies.

For a unit of it's cost and size, the ADVC100 is great! I was set up and ready to digitize within 10 minutes. The heavy duty firewire cable that was included in the package was a big surprise and came in handy.
I am not too happy that the unit doesn't get rid of the copy guard on DVDs which is a problem for me because some of my work needs me to utilize previously recorded material for presentations.
All and all, the unit seems to be worth it for sure!

Canopus ADVC100 Advance Digital Video Converter

Strengths: The advc100 can capture your video with zero dropped frames.

Weakness: The price is a factor.

I have used other video capture cards to convert old hi8 and vhs videos to dvd. The ati card I have used in the past dropped frames badly. The advc100 has not dropped a single frame. The picture is as clear as the tape you convert.

Canopus ADVC100 Advance Digital Video Converter

Strengths: Compact, easy to use, provides excellent quality capture.

Weakness: None noted. Unit does get warm.

I have only used this to capture analog so far. It does the job excellently and maintanes excellent quality. I use a 1 foot high quality S-Video cable along with RCA cables for sound. The unit measures 4.5 x 6 x 1 inch; very compact. Highly recommended.

Canopus ADVC100 Advance Digital Video Converter

Strengths: Easy to use, no complicated hookups. Compact and solidly built.

Weakness: No composite cables included (a minor complaint).

I haven't tried other video converters, so I cannot make a comparison. However, reading the many positive reviews and opinions on afterdawn.com convinced me to buy it. It is about the size of a thick slice of bread, and can sit atop a dvd or vcr and hardly be noticed. Using it is a breeze. There are two bonus uses of this unit, one of which you can read about on afterdawn.com that makes purchasing an ADVC-100 a great investment. The other benefit I discovered for myself is that you can use this unit in place of an RF modulator for those of us that still have an old TV set that only has a cable-in connection, and cannot view DVDs without such a unit.

I have used this unit to tranfer DVDs and VHS tapes to my PC harddrive. One of the VHS tapes that I transferred was a second generation tape of a Hi8 tape. I was pleased with the quality of the DVD that I burned of this tape. It appeared to have better video quality than the VHS tape itself.

Canopus ADVC100 Advance Digital Video Converter

Strengths: "Plug and Play"

Weakness: None encountered as of yet. The unit is a little pricey (paid $255 @ ecost.com), but in this case you get what you pay for (a quality Video analog-digital video converter)

I have read many good things about the Canopus ADVC-100 from various DV discussion boards. I was primarily looking for a unit that would allow me to preview video on an external NTSC video monitor while editing in my NLE editing package (Vegas). I had been using my DV video camera to do the Firewire=> analog video conversion, but wanted to give my camera a rest (I was not happy about having the camera out on the desk all the time).

The ADVC-100 works as advertised in Firewire (PC) => Analog video conversion. I'm using composite video (RCA connector) to connect to the video monitor. S-video is also available.

The ADVC-100 also performs DV pass-through, so I can connect my DV camera to the 6-pin Firewire port on the ADVC-100, and it passes the DV signal through to the Firewire cable that connects the ADVC-100 to my PC's Firewire input. So, for capturing DV from my DV camera, I can just connect the camera to the ADVC-100 and it is passed through to the PC.

I have not used the ADVC-100 to do analog-to-digital conversion (say a digital/capture of a VHS tape), and hence I only gave it 4 out of 5. I'm sure this feature will work fine, I just haven't tried it.

You rated it low because you did not use it ??? Ridiculous.

I would like to let you know that my business with Henry T Kirk c/o 4 Video Equipment has been very good, they have been very helpful to me and gave me a very fast refund. I would definetly recommend this company.
