The Best of Seven

Started Nov 27, 2006

Strengths: Great Picture

Weaknesses: weak 'Toshiba Digital Community'

Toshiba didn't stand out in one of the megastores, and the advice was either confusing or geared towards specific brands.

What to do? I followed the advice in the Dec. 2006 issue of a well-known consumer evaluation magazine that rated the Toshiba as the best of seven 26" LCD TV brands.

My experience parallels their conclusion: the Toshiba 26HLV66 has an excellent HD picture, and is very good for DVDs and standard-definition programming. Good blacks! Sound is also very good, and the remote is excellent, among the best I've seen.

On that remote is a mode select switch between TV/DVD and VCR. When you forget to switch back after looking at a tape, as I did, the remote appears defect. I had to read the manual, and learned that I should restore the Factory Default settings if the recommended solution to make my remote working again would not be successful. But you can not enter the required PIN number without a properly working remote! This 'problem' -at least for dummies like me-, and the underwhelming 'Toshiba Digital Community' are my only complaints about the 26HLV66.

I ordered the TV sixteen days before writing this review on the morning of Cyber Monday, 11/27/2006, and it cost $80 less than it costs now. Is there a lesson to be learned? Finally, the price difference between the TV with DVD and without DVD is such that I wonder why anyone would consider the latter.

Today is December 8th... if you ordered it on Cyber Monday, that would have been 11 days ago... anyways, when did you get the TV, and what kinds of things have you watched on it so far?

Have you heard of any problems on these vertical slot loading DVD players? I had heard something a while ago about them not reading certain DVDs, but I don't know if that was on this model or an older one.

Thanks
