SlingBox Pro - Truly Awesome!
Does Everything it Claims to and more! WOW! Great Tech Support Too and it is located in the USA.
Not a weakness since they tell you, but you must have good internet connection and fast processor and video on your computer
Posted Jan 9, 2007 - All I can say is WOW! They are right it will truly change the way you will or can watch TV. I looked at the 3 units that are available and found the basic did not do digital cable and the AV did not have passthrough connections if you don't have enough outputs on your cable/DVR box so for a few bucks more went with the Slingbox Pro. Got it hooked up in a few minutes and was able to get it to work just fine on my internal network, but found the setup a bit more difficult with my NETGEAR FV318 business router and VOIP Router combination. I actually spent several hours trying to get it to work and just could not get the setup right. I tried their online support and it must have been before they opened in the AM so did not get an interactive reply. But when I called on the phone it was only a couple of minutes wait to get a person that is actually in the USA and I did not have trouble understanding the two people I spoke to. It was a very pleasant suprise and I hope they don't take tech out of the USA ever. The first rep I spoke with we spent about 30 minutes working with it and he was not able to get it to work with my router either. (they log onto my network and do the setup themselves very smart.) He gave me a couple of suggestions to try and said if that did not work to call back and maybe another rep would see what he was missing (great honesty here.) I still was not able to and called back. Spent about an hour with another tech and he was able to log in and finally get the settings right. Viola Presto amazing watching my DVR and Cable on my Computer in an instant. I tried it via my Cingular Wireless card to see how it would work and it did, but since it is only a G3 signal the video was a bit jumpy (not sure how it would look on a Smart Phone, but my guess is it would be a bit jumpy too. Wish it would work on a Blackberry, but maybe someday. I had my son try it from LA with his Mac and he was really impressed. There are some nice docking features that allow you to watch it on your desktop docked right or left so you can still work with your applications still in the same format you are used to, though they are just moved over a bit. You can also watch in several modes from Widescreen, Letterbox or Full Screen and more. Yhe on screen remote control simulates your own remote at home and there is also a mode that gives you faster and more acurate control of the on screen remote. I tried it from another location down south this week and found connecting it to my widescreen TV worked great too and piping the audio to the home theatre worked as good. The computer that I have there though is an older laptop and is not a fast processor so I was getting some lagtime on the video and audio. Next month will try it from Europe and there should be no difference in quality I am really impressed with this little gizmo and the really cool thing is there are no monthly fees to watch YOUR OWN home cable, DVR, On Demand and other premium channels remotely. For only $250 or less for the other models you have it all. I rate this a MUST HAVE if you are into gadgets and if you love sports (I don't) it is just for you and the reason why it was first developed. I found no drawbacks to it and everything they say about it on their website is honest and true. No Hype Just Fact!
