Strengths:Reasonably priced, energy efficient, clean design.
Weaknesses:Does vibrate quite a bit in the spin cycle. Pedestals are outrageous ($200 each).
Posted Dec 17, 2007 - I purchased this washer to replace an old top loading one that was past its prime. I had read that front load washers were more energy efficient and used less water which is certainly true. But not only does this help with the energy efficiency of the washer, but the dryer as well because the clothes do not come out nearly as wet as they did with my old washer so therefore take less time to dry. And since the dryer is one of the most expensive appliances to run this results in some nice savings. The only downside versus the old top load is that you can't just decide to throw in a couple more things when its filling or you will end up with a pile of water on the floor.
It is recommended you use high efficiency (HE) laundry detergent with this washer which could be a downer for some. We only use All detergent because of some sensitivity issues and it is the same price per number of loads for the HE and regular kinds.
The only real downside to the washer so far is like most other reviewers have said the spin cycle can get a little out of control. Its virtually silent until then, but once it hits the laundry room does start shaking and we've had a few things fall off the shelves around it. I've heard some various recommendations for stabilization that I have not tried yet.
I have also read about some mold issues with the washer so it is important when you are done washing you do not seal the door so the leftover water can evaporate. You also should use the cleaning cycle with bleach as recommended to prevent this.
