4 Star Review GW500A-1V G-Shock Atomic Solar Men's Rubber Watch

Strengths:

Nice display; easy to set

Weaknesses:

watch band; instructions booklet is very, very small

Posted Apr 7, 2006 - Nice solar and atomic combination watch for the price. Easy to use and set. Great value for the price. Display is easy to read. Like the ability to easily move from one time zone to another.

5 Star Review GW500A is a Very Nice Watch - Black Rubber type

Strengths:

Very Reasonable Price, accuracy due to atomic and solar that should eliminate batteries.

Weaknesses:

I hope that Casio has fixed the problem of the Battery Replacement CTL1616 Battery can be pricey to replace. I think that they have fixed the previous problems with this battery!

Posted Apr 9, 2008 - I bought the SS version at Costco which is much cheaper than this one ... strange isn't it????? Both are the same directions and both use the same battery to charge by solar. I know that Casio had problems with earlier CTL1616 batteries but they seemed to have fixed the problem of getting a long life out of these recent models. The manual you get with the watch is such small print so you might want to download a free copy at the Casio Web site under the module number 2638 SS and 2688 black & enlarge it on your computer. Here is the link for both: ftp.casio.co.jp/pub/wo... I like the black plastic one for work and the Stainless Steel for dress ... both here in San Antonio, Texas have to be left in a window to update the time nightly. Otherwise, they do not update. I LOVE both watches ... take your pick ... the SS was $20 less at Costco than the black one. Have a Great Day! John San Antonio

3 Star Review The Problem with Atomic Solar watches...

Strengths:

Great time keeping.

Weaknesses:

Short battery life.

Posted 1 year ago - The problem with solar watches is that they are not truly solar operated. They contain a rechargeble battery (ex. CTL1616) that is solar charged. By the way they don't charge under any light. They require light with some ultraviolet content such as fluorescent lighting or direct sunlight. In any case, after 2 or 3 years of use the rechargeble battery starts to lose its ability to hold a charge. When this happens its just a matter of time before you either have to replace the battery or buy a new watch. Battery replacement on Casio solars is something that has to be done by a Casio authorized repair center at a cost of approximately $25.00 plus shipping and handling...

5 Star Review GW500A-IV G Shock Atomic Solar Mens Rubber Watch

Strengths:

Iincredible product for the money. Great for people who travel through several time zones and people who wear watch while working out

Weaknesses:

Appearance leaves a bit to be desisred. Not a dress watch

Posted Jan 25, 2007 - I recommend this product for the active person. This watch was first brought to my attention by a radio talk show host who raved about it for every day use and his needs as a small plane pilot. After that several callers also commented on the quality of the watch and its features.

5 Star Review Awesome

Strengths:

I love the sleek design and styling of the watch. It is very comfortable, and can be worn both formal and casual. I like the solar battery and automatic time setting features.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Dec 5, 2006 - I have owned three Casio watches and by far this is the best one yet. I plan on buying some for holiday gifts. Some watches with the same features are bulky and uncomfortable, this watch is just the opposite.

2 Star Review Great on Paper - Not so much in real life!

Strengths:

On paper: solar & atomic combo - awesome!

Weaknesses:

In real life: many posts (see Google) about rechargeable battery dying in 2-3 years. Often doesn't find a signal to sync the time.

Posted Jul 2, 2007 - I have a cheap Timex 1440 Atomic, which syncs from the Colorado signal anywhere and everywhere you put it. The Casio, not so much. It has a really hard time finding a signal - I suspect this is why it's been factory programmed to try for a signal four times per night. It's a bummer. Nice price, love the idea of atomic and solar. But with reports of batteries dying within a few years, and my experience with the signal quality, this one is going back. Oh, and... the $30 Timex keeps more accurate time when not in range (Timex makes their own Quarz crystals in house unlikes Seiko), and it's a FOUR BAND receiver - so it works in Europe and Japan too, unlike the Seiko which is U.S. only.

4 Star Review Casio CW500A Solar Watch

Strengths:

Solar Power, automatic time setting

Weaknesses:

Some display information is too small

Posted 1 year ago - I bought this watch because I got tired of paying for replacement batteries. Over the life of my watches, the batteries were costing more than the watches. Styling is nice for a sports watch although it is thicker than a typical watch. The solar power seems to be working well so far, it is always fully charged. I live in NJ and the auto time setting usually works, but it does need to be placed near a window. You don't really need the auto time setting anyway since it keeps excellent time, but it will be useful for daylight savings time changes. My only real complaint is that some of the diplay information in the 3 little round dials is too small for older eyes to read. A minor complaint is that the alarm is not very loud. Overall I am very happy with this purchase, a nicely styled watch with excellent features at a reasonable price.

4 Star Review Great watch

Strengths:

Durable, easy to read, multi-functional, water resistant, solar-powered so I don't need to change batteries.

Weaknesses:

Larger face than most watches, so I can't wear it for formal occasions under a shirt cuff.

Posted May 27, 2008 - This watch serves those with an active lifestyle best. No worries about the watch lasting through arduous conditions, such as heat, cold, or rain. The G-Shock is designed for the worst you can expose it to, and it won't succumb.

4 Star Review Works and looks great.

Strengths:

Date/Day/Time nicely displayed. Atomic time synchronization. Solar cell.

Weaknesses:

Solar cell needs replacement.

Posted Oct 6, 2007 - Atomic time synchronization keeps this watch accurate within 1s. No problems syncing this in Texas every night. No indication on how long the solar cell will last. The manual indicates a long time but doesn't go on to state the actual expected life span. Non-solar watches are already advertised as 10-year battery so I'd expect this to last more than 10 years.

Strengths:

Great looking, wonderful features for the price. Waterproof for swimming.

Weaknesses:

Does not have countdown timer.

Posted Jul 11, 2007 - The info windows are a little small for these 66 year old eyes, but I love it overall. Probably the last watch I will have to buy.
