Strengths:

Doesnt crash period. Ive run battlefield, doom3, and others but it cant get better than this. XP Pro is slower and less stable.

Weaknesses:

none it is a little boring to look at though

Posted Apr 15, 2005 - Ive read the reviews of the other users and I have to say that of all the MS OSs 2000 is the best. Ive built computers and Ive tested every os since 98 on my machines and 2000 is the most stable. I use it on my main office server and that computer has run for 4 years without crashing once. It takes up less space and system speed than xp and it beats the hell out of me

Strengths:

Based on NT, Stable, NTFS (no chkdsk on crash, but no crashes either), SP4, not slower than win98SE

Weaknesses:

system resource consumption

Posted Aug 20, 2003 - Win2K is at SP4. Very stable. It still wont fix or work around H/W problems; newer systems are a must; System consumes 128MB memory, 2G HD space (with no bells or whistles) and takes upto 5% CPU. Fix all ur h/w problems first - like get the latest BIOS for MB, dont mix up AGP8X board with 2X board etc etc. WinXP is not as stable, but has better features (commentary of some reviewers not withstanding). NTFS is better with XP, large disk support better, better defrag, better MFT location, upto 15% faster (if you believe MS) etc etc. 2K will be phased out in 2 yrs but XP will coexist for a while with longhorn, so base your decision on that too... lastly, for a novice, ignore comparisons between Win & Mac. They support distinctly different Hardware. Have a PC, use Win; Have apple H/W, use MacOS. Unix for PC is for computation intensive applications, not much consumer application support yet.

Strengths:

Stablity, Security, Levels of access

Weaknesses:

NOT VERY MANY, Microsoft Product

Posted Feb 3, 2002 - I have been using Win2KPro for about 7 months, I play games, run my network, and listen to music and watch DVDs. It works great with my NEW RADEON 8500. In short this is a very stable OS that has very few compatibility problems. I had no problem upgrading from 98SE, however, with all Microsoft products a CLEAN install is HIGHLY recommended. All my software except Audiocatalyst 2.1 works well with this OS. Uses much less system resources than Win98 SE. No problems with games, Starcraft, Mechwarrior 4, Janes USAF ... Highly recommend that you use this instead of Win XP. Later if you decide that XP has enough support to work well you can easily upgrade, even if you have converted your drive to NTFS partition. My business network works EXTREMELY well with WIN2kPro. FINALLY a Microsoft product that works as it should. PS DO NOT TRY XP. It is garbage.

Strengths:

Relatively reliable

Weaknesses:

Slower than Windows ME Insecure, and occasionally crashes

Posted Oct 15, 2002 - I tried to develop software with MS-ME, but had too many crashes, so now I use Windows 2000. I use it vanilla style, and avoid some of its extra features which are Microsoft centric. There is a feature to help recover lost files. I avoid that one, since the software of that feature contracted a virus on my system.

1 Star ReviewI found this website because my computer came with ...

Strengths:

None that I did not find in Windows 98 SE.

Weaknesses:

Very unstable; constantly crashes; would not select text before SP3; CTRL ALT DEL does not work since SP3; incompatible with many devices.

Posted Aug 7, 2003 - I found this website because my computer came with Windows 2000 Pro pre-installed and I am looking for another OS to put on it instead. It is hard to believe some others gave it such a good rating; my own experience with it has been incredibly bad. I used Windows 98, then 98SE, for years before getting this computer, and had no trouble with them at all. When I got my Tecra 8100 with Win 2000 and found it would not select text, it sat in its case unused until my 98SE computer crashed from a virus. I have tried installing the service packs and am finally giving up on Windows 2000 Pro. For my work, a computer that won't select text is virtually useless. This was supposedly corrected in Service Pack 3, but after installing SP3, I found it still would not select because the user.exe file was not updated. I installed a hotfix that includes the new user.exe, but now CTRL ALT DEL does not work - and with this OS, it is needed constantly because there is one crash after another. Most recently, the index entries for two drivers were spontaneously deleted, and now it will start in normal mode only after it has been started 5 or 6 times in Safe Mode. It seems to me that Win 2K was badly designed in the first place and Microsoft has been tinkering with it ever since, fixing one bug only to introduce new bugs. They will never get it right. I am going back to Windows 98 SE, and only wish it were still supported.

Strengths:

Stability

Weaknesses:

None known

Posted May 4, 2002 - My work runs a package of several applications including streaming stock market data, real-time graphics updating, TV tuner, several open websites + 4 monitors. Struggled with W98 for 3 years. BSOD 1-2 times per week + other hangs requiring reboot. Had to defrag at least once per day. (A bad day would have me rebooting and defragging 3 times!) Could never have kept running without constant repair from a well-known maintenance utility. Using Win2000 for 60 days now with zero BSOD, zero reboots, and have defragged twice out of general principle. Solved my problems... seems to run smooth as a gravy sandwich.

Strengths:

Speed, stability, built-in features, security... every thing

Weaknesses:

The only weakness is that if you want to use it at home a few(only 1 out of my 27) games won't run in Windows 2000.

Posted Mar 14, 2002 - This is the best Microsoft OS out there! BETTER THEN WINDOWS XP!!! It is the most stable OS by Microsoft I have every used. The kernel is very small so you have plenty of CPU left to burn a CD, browse the net, and play a game ALL AT THE SAME TIME without messing up the CD your burning and with minimal lag. It supports the NTFS file system which is more efficient then FAT32 especially on massive hard drives. The NTFS file system also lets you easily compress your files to save disk space or encrypt your files for security. Windows 2000 is great for company networks because of its stability, which makes the IT department's job a lot easier. Also if your company currently has a Windows NT 4.0 network I would suggest you upgrade to Windows 2000 because of its improved security. Some of the great built-in features of Windows 2000 are the very easy to use Internet Connection Sharing, Download Resuming, drivers for just about any thing, and more. I have been using Windows 2000 for a year and I love it because it's so much more stable then Windows 98. I have also tried Windows XP Professional(just because it looks cool doesn't mean it's good) and I did not find it to be as fast or as stable as Windows 2000 Professional. I highly recommend this product to every one, especially company networks. P.S. If you think that Mac OS is better then Windows 2000 (or any other OS for that matter) then you should be shot!

Strengths:

Very stable. Excellent multitasking and memory management.

Weaknesses:

Has been replaced by Windows XP.

Posted Jul 8, 2004 - As with any OS, the proper hardware drivers are needed to make it compatible with your motherboard. Stick to name brand systems and boards. The negative commentary I have read here must come from inexperienced users. I have been using Windows 2000 with my clients since a year into its release. The only thing I'm sorry about is that it has been replaced by Windows XP, which is still less stable and hardware friendly. Re the MAC: yeah, yeah, yeah ... I've heard all the MAC whining before. The MAC is a nice system, particularly now that it's Unix based, but if it ever reaches 95% of the installed user base, it will become a target for virus authors, just as is Windows. Part of the MAC's security advantage is that at only a tiny fraction of the desktop market, it flies below the radar of the virus writers.

Strengths:

Low Overhead, fast and easy install (8-2004)version and nice features.

Weaknesses:

Lots of conflicts with my '97 Sony. But I got it to work.

Posted Aug 12, 2004 - I LIKE Win 2000 Pro. Its very '98 ish but it responds better than '98 even though I shoe-horned it into my pentium 200Mhz. I also run it with my AMD-64. Naturally that is a better fit, but to run at 200 MHz and 1800 MHz is a pretty versitile OS I'd say. Crashes are few. Usually its due to me running utility programs, and web surfing at the same time. Plus the normal collection of anti-spy programs, virus watchers, etc. What's a poor OS to do? Everyone should check out "NO-Nags" for competant software that is SAFE. Its all screened and free to try out. 95/98/and 2000 PRO are my reccomendations as that is what I've used. Sky

Strengths:

WIN2000 Pro 'IS' stable as a rock ... I have compared 2000 with XP in scanning photos, opening up photo folders, and making CD's of photos. XP has crashed several times for me, but 2000 does not.

Weaknesses:

Bland, but with Webshots I find that 2000 is as pretty as XP. Also, I seem to have trouble losing my ISP connection after receiving my email with 2000, but not with XP. It is not an ISP problem.

Posted Jul 18, 2003 - WIN 2000 Pro is a great OS!!! I recommend it to everyone searching for a new OS. Stable as a rock, 2000 has been alot more stable than my XP Home OS. XP has severe photo editing problems, but with 2000 these same problems are foreign to it. I use a 2-hard drive system with OS's on 2 separate drives, 2000 Pro and XP. XP is great for Web searching, emailing, and word processing, BUT 2000 Pro is 'far better' for photo editing, CD copying of photos, and simple photo-folder inspection. XP has crashed several times while inspecting even a 100MB photo-folder, and I have had several severe problems [crashes] with XP. I have 512 RAM, 800 AMD processor, 7200 WD Hard Drives, and a GeForce 4 MX440se 128MB Video Card. This particular video card may be the problem with XP, XP taking alot more RAM Resources than 2000 Pro. For those upgrading their hardware, alot of RAM, an expensive video card [$100-150], and a 7200 hard drive as a minimum is recommended for XP, but with 2000 you do not need all of this 'zoom'. My RAM and video card setup is not a problem with 2000 Pro --- I say hurrah!!! WIN 2000 Pro is highly-highly recommended even for the home PC buff. I do alot of photo scanning, and photo work --- WIN 2000 is very-very solid.

Strengths:

Stability, speed, ease of use, and compatibility.

Weaknesses:

Some older applications and games do not work, and some older hardware is not supported.

Posted Jun 21, 2003 - Well, at first, Windows 2000 was a pain because I had an older 5400 RPM hard drive and it wouldn't install, but after getting a new 7200 RPM hard drive, it installed great. I am very impressed with Windows 2000. I have been a dedicated Windows 98SE user for years, and I still think highly of that product, it was relatively stable and ran well with everything you could put in it. After upping to 2000, though, i noticed a few key things. Windows 2000 is stable as hell. You can use it for days upon days upon days without any slow-down. I have only re-booted my machine a few times since I installed 2000 a week ago. Setup can be long, but once you get your hardware installed and all the service packs installed, things work wonderfully. It is secure, and manages data much better than any 9x product. The file system, NTFS, is more advanced than FAT(32). My network connection seems to be faster under 2000, also. All in all, I believe that Windows 2000 is the best OS that has come out of Microsoft to date, better then XP, even. It is great to be able to use Windows for a few days without a reboot and still be able to do everything at full speed. My advice is, if you are running Windows 98, 98SE, or God forbid, ME, upgrade. It will be well worth it, just DON'T FORGET TO BACK UP!:-)

Strengths:

Though as NT, easy to use, Plug and Play, works with USB ports, works with tons of MS applications (old and new).

Weaknesses:

BSOD, Eats too much RAM, need constant reboots after a long day of hard work, hangs ups like any MS product, if the Task Manager is used to close Internet Explorer the whole desktop goes kaput!

Posted Mar 10, 2003 - I am a used more Win95 and NT 4.0 Used Win98SE and freezed too much on me so I decided to chuck it! Used ME for a day and almost lost all my hairs! NT was greate but no USB support and "NT" drivers kills me. But the best feature was tough to break for a MS product, the best thing they did was add PnP features, USB, Defrag, better drivers and W2K was born! I always said that W2K is the best MS product ever created. Clean, easy to use and better OS ever produce by MS. The install is quiet easy. I personaly do not recomend an upgrade from any MS OS, I suggest a clean install from scratch better. There are better OSs than MS, but this is the best "MS Product" yet! I forgot, the OS is too barebones, you have to invest a good chunk of money if you want some wordprocesing or any other applications. But as is it is worthless, except for browsing the web. So be prepared to spend $$ for the OS and $$ for the other goodies that you might want.

5 Star ReviewWin 2000 PRO is the best MS OS for the home user. ...

Strengths:

Memory management. Doesn't crash because of memory leaks like win9.x. It's not complete garbage like ME or XP. I give it 5 stars only as it relates to other Windows operating systems.

Weaknesses:

Not many for a MS product. MS is already trying to shuffle us away from 2000 and get us to XP which is trash, just in time to then again get us to pay for the next upcoming OS.

Posted Oct 17, 2002 - Win 2000 PRO is the best MS OS for the home user. If you have the money, MAC OS 10.2, based on UNIX, is the cream of the crop. If you want to save money and have a great system, Buy a 1 gig system running a version of linux for around $300. Mandrake Linux 9 has just been released and has gotten rave reviews. It has the look and feel of Win98 but with one advantage. It's WAYYYY better. It has all the tools and software to accomplish all the functions of Windows with Office at a fraction of the price and with many times greater stability.

Strengths:

Stable, powerful, more secure than most other MS OS's, runs very well,

Weaknesses:

Some computers when doing clean install won't work due to old BIOS or a setting in there. It would help if this wasn't an issue with installing Windows 2000. Hardware not always compatible.

Posted Jun 21, 2003 - Windows NT OS is known by many to be very secure. It's ditched DOS base all together. Windows 2000 is very stable, secure, and I recommend this OS to all. I bought this because I was interested in trying out this OS, plus my college class we were troubleshooting computers with Windows 2000 installed. This OS is known for bad installs, some I found out I had to disable Shadow RAM in the BIOS Setup app to get around it. Overall, this OS runs great and it and the newer Windows XP are very similar, afterall, 2000 is built on NT and XP uses stuff from both those being another one of the NT kernel based OS's from Microsoft.
