Posted Apr 28, 2007 - What do Mac users all over the world do since Vista made its public release? They lie about how superior Mac OSX is. Vista at its lowest level (Home Basic) smokes the Mac OS like like a Ferrari running against a Volkswagon Bug. Just load Vista to a system with comparable hardware to what Mac offers - you will see an immediate improvement in processing power and capability. Hey, even Windows users love to hate the latest versions - it means they have to re-acquaint themselves with the new version. XP users will find Ultimate offers all XP had and much more. They will have to become familiar with where common use items are in Vista, but the included "Help and Support" makes everything easier - occasionally making such as program setting automatic, by just clicking on a provided prompt. Vista Ultimate offers a voice recognition feature that works great for dictating letters and running applications. Many added softwares just became obsolete as Vista has so many more functions built in. The Media Center is just one application that allows users to enjoy a full TV media system with an added TV media card and offers a remote control function just like every new TV has. Internet streaming of shows is even easier with a broadband connection - and you can easily use your computer to perform PVR functions for free! DVD and CD burning are easier than ever, so storing those favorites, or needed items, is easier than ever before. Resource hogging is a myth. The system OS sees to proper management of all loaded programs and I am till yet to ever experience a "blue screen" or improper shutdown. Just install 2 Gb. of quality memory, be sure to use a video card with DirectX 9 compatibility and the proper amount of memory. Hey, the Online Advisor will notify of any problems, if you explore it, and offer advice on all of what needs to be done. If you have a PC with Vista rated hardware, all you will need is the signed Vista drivers. I ran Vista in "compatibility mode" for months until all my drivers became available from manufacturers. Now Vista Ultimate just runs faster - faster and smoother in the beginning than XP 32-bit, it is a welcome relief. Driver support for Vista is appearing like never before. In just a few months since its release, all of my drivers are now signed for Vista and all of my hardware is running at top performance. Even my old Logitech wireless RF and Bluetooth keyboards are fully supported! One suggestion - if you have a 64-bit processor, buy the Vista x64 version. It has a 32-bit folder that provides for all that the 32-bit version of Vista has. You really don't need the 32-bit version here unless you have a 32-bit processor. With a computer science degree from 35 years back, I found this latest new version of Windows with current Internet updates easier still than any other 32-bit software OS. (load it with Internet support enabled) Enjoy the best! Let the others rest - Vista Ultimate is excellent in Work or Home environments.

Vista Ultimate

Posted Feb 24, 2007 - I've got it for $45 only. The $300 pricetag is really ridiculous, wouldn't buy it for it, better to get XP OEM for $120. Looks nice, new start menu is very usefull, you can type any application, feature, link in it to start, instead of scrolling through pop-up menus. Almost every part of OS is configurable, so you can turn off some annoying pop-ups and etc. (of course you need to know what you're doing). All peripherals work, but some with limited configurations, software works too, even if it's stated as unsupported. Only one will not work (structural engineering application), waiting for patch. Bottom line - very nice OS if you get it cheap, but stick with XP otherwise.

Windows Vista Ultimate...

Posted May 28, 2007 - Windows Vista Ultimate is a very powerful version of Windows; it incorporates to a degree better security, very easy to learn new user interface, and better dual core management. The retail version also comes with a 64 bit cd included with the 32 bit. The only problem with it is its massive taxation of the graphics card and more importantly on the Processor. I have problems running it on my laptop because sometimes it runs the processor to 100% for long periods of time, and my laptop is a high end dell XPS from late 05' loaded with 2 GB ram, 256 mb ATI gfx, and P 3.4ee Intel processor. If you want to run this on your laptop beware, drivers are mostly non existent, most software although claming to be vista compliant using compatibility mode are not stable or do not even run. I still use it a lot but I have a separate hot swappable hard drive for it. As far as glitches "TrustedInstaller.exe" runs frenzy on the processor (100% for long periods of time), otherwise the minor "memory could not be read” errors occasionally happen. Otherwise, it is an excellent desktop operating system.

Win Vista Ultimate

Posted Apr 29, 2007 - Upgrading from Win XP to Win Vista Ultimate, you will be pleased with the graphic user interface and stability of the new OS. The features available in XP are now more robust on Vista Ultimate which also has Windows Media Center and Tablet PC built in. However, you will eventually notice the sluggishness of the whole PC system since Vista demands more system resources, especially from the CPU, memory and graphics card. Somehow, MS decides not to support PocketPC 2002 or earlier versions in its Win Mobile Device Center which forces me to keep using Win XP on another PC to install programs and sync data on my five-year old PocketPC to extend its useful product life. If your PC hardware components are not up to speed for Vista, it might be better to keep it running on XP. Otherwise, I would recommend Win Vista Ultimate OS for any new PC system.

Want or Need Vista Now

Posted Dec 9, 2007 - If you want or need to see the latest OS from Microsoft, get Windows Ultimate, but, if you can hold off, Windows XP will be adequate you for a while. I am sure Windows Home Premium will be okay as well, but you do not get the Backup and Restore feature that you get with Ultimate. Restore from Backup is relatively quick if you have a fast computer and External Drive as is the initial backup. Do not pay dollar for what ever OS that you buy. Compare prices online!

The best version of Windows yet

Posted Nov 30, 2007 - This is Microsoft latest and greatest and is worth moving up to if you have a modern PC. If you have an ancient one, then you might not want to bother unless you are willing to upgrade it. Most people complain that Vista takes too many resources to run and that is true. But so what? XP used more resources than ME, 2000 or 98. This is how advancing technology works.

Windows Vista Ultimate

Posted May 18, 2007 - This OS has a great interface. Love the multiple pane abilities. The Direct X 10 inclusion will be a great addition once more games are made for it. I had no problems with the install, and the automatic updates are trouble free. I wish however that either Microsoft had waited a bit, or other software/hardware vendors were a bit faster at getting the updates for Vista.

Vista Ultimate

Posted Apr 9, 2007 - I got this primarily to test our software on Vista. The UAC asks the user to confirm all these actions, which makes our software installation not very smooth. We will have to provide a lot more documents to our users. I haven't encountered big problems with Vista itself yet, and I haven't seen any big benefit either. Anyway, will be using it from now on, we will see what's going to happen.

Function sacrificed for the sake of Form--If you own Windows XP, this is a downgrade!

Posted Mar 15, 2007 - This has to be the worst step backward an OS has ever taken. There are several things about Vista that really annoy me, these are just my top-rated ones. It's bloated! 15GB for just an OS? Just because hard drives are bigger doesn't mean that software code shouldn't be written efficiently in as little space as possible. It renders lost of hardware and software obsolete. It's going to force most people to open their wallets very wide to purchase new hardware that will support it, and to upgrade all their software. Many hardware products that were new or mainstream as recently as 2006 will not be supported in Vista. A lot of your existing software will not even install on it. Do your homework before upgrading! It's too pretty. Unless you have a mid-range ($130.00+) or higher video card, then you won't be able to effectively use all the system-performance-draining bells and whistles of the Aero Theme, which are little more than useless eye candy. System configuration features are scattered all over the place. Several "features" are really annoying, poorly designed, poorly thought out, or dumbed down to the point of being almost completely useless by people who actually know how to use Computer hardware and software. UAC has to be the worst computing idea I've ever seen. Have you seen the funny MAC commercial with the Security guy? That's right on the mark! File Backup software is a complete joke. The development team of this piece of $h!+ should be fired. The File Backup software doesn't let the user choose which types of files to backup (you can choose Microsoft's pre-chosen file types, all file types, or no file types). So what happens when you install application X with it's own file type? The Sidebar is a huge system performance drain. The Sidebar cannot be hidden, and it's transparent gadgets really suck up the system resources. Turn on the System Performance (gas gage) gadget with 40% transparency. Then hover your mouse over to watch the gas gage rev as Vista hogs nearly +40% of the total system resources to display this one simple gadget. And this is on a PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 CPU and 2GB of PC6400 RAM. Could the Vista Aero window borders and title bars take up any more screen space? Aero window borders are almost 10 pixels wide. Aero Title Bars are almost two rows when compared to the Windows Classic theme. If you like to see lots of information on your screen at once, the Aero theme is not feasible. The Upgrade version cannot perform a Clean Installation--a new installation to a completely empty hard drive. Microsoft claims it the upgrade CD can do a "clean install". But to Microsoft, a clean install is one where you already have Windows XP or 2000 installed on your hard drive and you launch the Vista installation program from within that running OS. What is clean about that? Windows Explorer has gone from Bad to Worse This is the one component that makes sense to bundle with an OS and Microsoft seems to castrate it more with each successive version of Windows. The new Search function is a serious performance drain. Like all the Search indexer from previous versions, it will still index files when the user is actively using the PC, instead of scheduling it's search index in off-peak times. It does lower the priority when a user is active, but it doesn't stop the index. So you hard drive thrashes. And the larger your hard drive (and its contents), the longer it will thrash while you try to use your computer. Disable the Search Index service before doing large file copy operations then turn it back one and leave your PC running overnight so it doesn't get in your way.

microsoft always releases too early

Posted Apr 16, 2007 - I ran Vista for about a month. It was fun to have the latest and greatest new toys but the lack of productivity forced me to reinstall WinXPsp2. With Vista being so new many hardware companies have not released drives (and many may not ever release drivers for Vista). This may someday be a great operating system. Keep in mind that even its predecessor Windows XP was a horrible, incompatible, error-filled, joke when it was released. Then came Service Pack 1 and that is when most people jumped on board and were able to get something done. Windows XP is finally a compatible, powerful, useful operating system. I expect the same experience from Vista. I will give Vista some time to grow into a real useable operating system and then I will install and use it daily.

Posted Jun 27, 2007 - "Easy Transfer" of settings wouldn't work. No driver for my radeon video card so it flickers. In its effort to be user friendly, some basic functionality, like a windows explorer, aren't there

It will depend on your computer configuration whether or not all your peripherals will work at a maximum level. Some with limited configurations if your PC is not up to date with the latest and greatest components on the market. Software works too, even if it's stated as unsupported with some exceptions. The fax/email capabilities is a plus with the ultimate edition. Bottom line - nice OS if you get it cheap, but there is not enough pros to support the additional money you have to spend on upgrading your computer to run Vista. Stick with XP otherwise unless your buying a new computer then you might as well have Vista.
