Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Nice multimedia support. Fast and reliable once set up correctly.

Weakness: Security Flaws. Backdoors..

I exclusively run WinME on all my machines because it was the last version of Windows that give the user a choice of installed components. I've read some of the comments about WindowsME and most of them are cause by a poorly setup PC.

WinME installs best on a blank PC.(freshly formatted) HDD. Furthermore adding a partition for the SWAP file increases stability on *ANY* Windows platform. If you run Windows with all your apps and OS on the C:/ it will never be stable. Instead partition your HDD like Linux.

C:/ OS install only (4GB)
D:/ SWAP (1GB)
E:/ Software (Whatever)
F:/ Games. (Whatever)

1. Turn off Auto Update. (yea.. I've never updated my WinME)
2. Config Recycle Bin individually. Turning off the RecycleBin on C:/
3. Point your Virtual Memory to D:/ (Put nothing else here)
4. Don't use.. IE, Outlook or anything else by Microsoft.
Sorry, but everything they produce has security holes.
5. Install a firewall.

I'm using an 800MHz AMD PC for a Multimedia & Gaming System. I have a digital projector attached to this thing that projects my screen on the wall 10feet diagonal. I love it!

FYI - WinME has a comprimized Distributed COM and Kernerl32.EXE They attempt to go out to the internet. (A firewall is needed!)

But for the XP lovers.. XP is much much worse.. WinXP had 72 security patches in the year of 2002 ALONE.. (WinME has about 8 total) I'll never buy another copy of Windows after WinME. XP is riddled with security flaws..

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Best of the DOS based Microsoft O.S.

This is like Windows 98 on steroids.System restore like XP.
I haven't had any problems with it. I think some of the reveiws that say it's trash wouldn't be happy with any o.s.But that's just my opinion. You know if your computer isn't configured properly or you try to get by with minimum system requirements you'll problely encounter problems. At least with system restore if everything was working up to a certain point and then gets screwed up because of something recently loaded you can get it up and running again much easier. Is there an o.s. that's IDIOT proof?

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: none

Weakness: everything

I purchased a computer with this OS and let me tell you, I have never been so frustrated, disgusted, and dissappointed with a product in all my life. The straw that finally "BROKE THE CAMEL'S BACK" for me was when my explorer crashed 3 weeks ago. I started experiencing freeze ups and having to shut down my computer by turning off the power every time it froze, that was maybe once or twice a month, now I can't use my PC for anything without it freezing up. I've even had to restore my entire system once I can't believe that microsoft would sell such trash, and even worse I can't believe that any computer company would sell computers with this me OS. I would advise anyone looking to use this OS, please don't waste your time, money or anything else with this. I was told recently that there are patches for fixing most if not all problems, but I find that hard to believe. Any how the heck can I download patches if my explorer is crashed.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Features like My pictures, slide show and Image preview. ME has many more than 98. Actually, other than the MANY diagnostic tools, and the stronger stability of WIN XP, ME is the same damn thing.

Weakness: Yea, ME crashes… but so what? If you know how to compute, you wont lose anything if you are careful.

It’s all about memory. If you have enough RAM, you are good to go on this OS. As far as XP goes, if you crash your Hard drive, YOU’RE SCREWED! You can only load XP once. Then the almighty Microsoft gods will deny you to reload XP! If you reconfigure your OS too many times by adding or deleting hard drives or disc drives XP shuts down. Do you really want that? I know I don’t! I love my ME. I understand how MS wants to cartel piracy and all that but if you pay $179+ for XP only to have MANY holes in the security of the OS and now you cannot reload it? What good is that? Note: I only do normal things on my OS. I do not play games at all so maybe if I did, I may rate ME differently. I don’t know about gamming so I couldn’t tell you about that. My review is that ME rocks. Good luck in your search.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Not many. It looks cooler than 98se

Weakness: Millions of weaknesses. Crashes and freezes all the time. Continously gets the windows blue screen of death.

Overall this os completey blows. It sucks. There aren't even any words to describe how bad this os is. Ever since the first week i got it on my dell system it has crashed and froze. It has to many bugs to count. The only thing it has going for it is that it looks neater and cooler than 98se and has a few more options. System restore is a joke. I had to use it a couple of times and then one time i used and it completely messed up my computer. I had to reinstall it once. It can't take any games. They just mess it up even more. After i reinstalled it i didn't put any of my games back on and it still crashes. i recommend xp pro any day. i have it on my other computer and it is awesome. i can throw anything at it. I put all my games on it and it stills runs smoothly. I have had xp for about a year and its only froze up once or twice and that was when i was playing a game. I cant even remember how many times me has froze. Even though me has a lot of bugs i think i still prefer it over 98 because it has a few more features and its a little newer. But now that xp and 2000 are out i wouldn't even touch me or 98. Take my advice and buy xp pro.plus xp looks cooler and has more options than me.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: many

Weakness: few

This is what 98 should have been, 98 was plaged by stupid things, like web view never really turning off and such, win me takes a couple steps back to the way 95 looked and worked while at the same time fixing the bugs in 98 and some new things as well. and to top it all off they finally stopped dos from loading first, kind of.the looks are shinyer, the network runs better, it boots and performs better and faster, it has more free stuff built in, and more then anything YOU CAN FINALLY TURN OFF THAT GOD FORSAKEN WEB VIEW.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: NONE

Weakness: Everything

Win ME is just Win98 with more bugs! It is terrible. ME is the single worst OS that I have used in my life. If you are going to use windows, you should upgrade to an NT based OS(such as 2000 Professional Or XP). Otherwise LINUX RULES!
Dos based operating systems are crap!

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Operating system is heavy on the hardware but worth it

Weakness: Upgrading from 98 causes some serious problems

This is a great operating system and I would recommend everyone upgrade. However if you upgrade from 98, I would recommend reformatting your hard drive and doing a clean install. I had some serious problems when running the upgrade from Windows 98 to ME. Performance suffered to the point of which you couldn't use the computer. A few other notes, in some instances backwards compatibility isn't maintained. In some other instances, you need to reinstall programs before they'll work properly. Overall, a good move, though more work than you originally think.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Smooth, fast and prettier than any previous OS. Handles high speed com good and easy to maintain.

Weakness: Must clean the reg after installing alot of new software and defrag weekly when playing games.

This OS is not as good as the XP Pro, but perfect for the general user. Like anything else, keep it clean and defragged and it will serve you perfectly.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: I don't know one!

Weakness: Crash, crash, crash and crash!!! It's the worst OS I had in my short life. Slow and buggy are good words to say about it.

Microsoft launched this bad product, I think, in full career, without a better previous avaluation in it. It is only buggy!
And more...so many unnecessary features, a lot of software have difficulties operating with or simply don't work. I regret to purchase this headache...it is the reason of my daily stress.
The last problem I had (after a lot!) the Internet Explorer hangs when I open a link in a new page... I tried all to fix it without succeed.
I think I'm the last of Moicans with this trash!

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Loads fast, shuts down fast, compatible with lots of programs and DOS based stuff. System Restore feature is #1 strength in this OS!

Weakness: Easily can run out of system resources and slow down. Easier to slow down system with lots of processes going on. Unlike Windows 2000 and XP.

I got the OEM version of this OS, Full version preinstalled in my current computer. I never really had a problem with Windows ME. I never did any networking with the OS, so maybe that's where the dark evil side is to this OS. I find it loads and shuts down faster than 2000 and XP. Both with the same amounts of memory too. Lots of programs will work with Windows ME since it's pretty much Windows 98, but tweaked a little bit. It is easier, however, to slow the system down quickly. What I mean is you probably won't be able to run as many processes/tasks while running this OS without getting a real slowdown. It's not all that bad of an OS though.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: What strength

Weakness: More unstable than Win98, same dos kernel, takes more time to boot and unable to use real DOS mode without a third party patch

Microsoft claims that it boots faster than win98 but they lie (and i used both on an intel 900mhz cpu w/256mb ram 32mb video memory) Windows Me has some features like internet board games and stuff that i managed to put on my win98 installation but I don't think that as a true upgrade. In other words, Don't waste your time on this piece of junk, stick to win98 if you like win9x or get WinXP. Windows Me won't do the trick.

If you have Win98 you could get MS Plus! to get features includes in windows ME like the compressed folders and the games

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Microsoft Windows ME is the best operating system in the world!

Weakness: What! $80 bug? So many people can't survival with this cost!

Why not WindowsXP or Windows98, because I want my computer very clean, very fast and very comfortable. WindowsXP make computer performance become slow, Windows98 is ancient OS very slow in networking.

Windows ME is a piece of junk that should not be installed on any PC.. becouse holes in security. unstabillity and other crap.. My suggestion is Windows 2000 professional.. 2000 pro. is the best OS i have ever used and it's got that damn stabillity.. of course 128-256mb of ram needed.. OR. windows XP professional..

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Attractive package---cosmetically.

Weakness: Memory consumption ad nauseum; poor or non-existent support from Microsoft in addressing key bugs in ME; extraneous add-ons instead of stable core features.

Microsoft can afford to turn a blind eye to this black sheep of the OS flock---simply because they own the world in terms of market control. But this sad, ungainly product with the cute name is less a blemish on their product reputation than a shrill reminder that no upgrade is, in itself, compulsory. I run Windows 98 on my laptop and have less problems with it by far than with its bells-and-whistles successor. I will now fork over the shekels for Windows 2000 because I have verified it works much better than either ME or XP...but I was smart this time: I tested out 2000 and XP on different friends' PC's; a trial download, as it were.

Strengths: Plenty of help menus, very plug n'play compatible.Allows for larger Hard Drives.Speaking personally I have had no problems again,I may be an exception.

Weakness: Has a few too many extras and addon's for my taste.

I would recommend, many of my friends have upgraded and have had a smooth operation, sure like any program it had it's problems at first, hey look at XP,like that does not have any problems??

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: none

Weakness: Slow, buggy, too many features you will never use or never need

the problem with ME is that microsoft loaded it up with all of their "Newest" features and they all load at once. very buggy. the only reason users bought it was because it was new. another reason that users are switching away from microsoft products all-together. But the new XP is alright.

Microsoft Windows Millenium Edition Complete Product

Strengths: Works better than 98 alone. More stable.

Weakness: You will have problems if you install as an upgrade! I've had problems with ALL operating systems, installing them as UPGRADES! Do a fresh/new install. Think of an "UPGRADE" like trying to paint dirt!

I have both ME & XP Professional on my hard drive. I use ME for certain audio remastering that I do and older games that only work with 98/ME. If you plan to put on both ME & XP, partition drive for each os, FAT for 98/ME and NTFS for XP. This way, 98/ME will never write (or read) anything from the XP os, therefore it won't corrupt the boot files. XP will beable to read the FAT partition. NEVER install a program or utility from XP on the FAT drive. This will cause headaches. Oh yes, you HAVE to install 98/ME first THEN XP!

Windows Me

The last operating system from Microsoft that doesn't need on-line activation, ME is basically a suped up version of Windows 98. It is a must have for those older PCs you have hanging around to handle games that XP won't.

Have read so many opinions, pros and cons, some seriously critical. Any change in your opinion since you wrote it and presumably have used ME for a while? I'm considering an upgrade (actually a clean install) from Win98(not SE) for new hardware compatability i.e. I need more storage beyond the 13G hard drive that came with my Dell XPS R450(Pentiun II) back in '99. Most new drives are OK w/ Windows SE or ME, not 98. Dell doesn't recommend XP for this model though I have the RAM, memory and BIOS upgrade that'll support it. Eventually I'll have a new machine but the current one runs fine and will benefit from more drive space.

Thanx
