2 Star Review Integrated Not Great, Select Separate Components Instead

Strengths:

Eliminates Wire Clutter, Relatively Inexpensive

Weaknesses:

Dropouts, Stalls, Loses Settings if Power Out, Difficult to Configure Secure Network, Cannot Return for Refund

Posted Oct 22, 2006 - I purchased this product one year ago. Since that time I've experienced adequate performance from the WCG200 with a 5Mbps connection from Time-Warner Cable in North Carolina but there is still some significant downside to this product. First, the WCG200 experiences intermittent stalls and dropouts that do not appear in its log, such as when the unit spontaneously resets itself or the connection suddenly halts, typically when I'm streaming video or downloading a large file. I believe some of the dropout is due to Time Warner Cable ("Roadrunner") in my area of North Carolina, but they've never admitted that, and my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I just received a replacement from Newegg (can't refund, only replace) and this unit just reset when downloading a large file. It would not self-recover, either, until after I had turned the unit off then back on. Second, if the power is out (I'm not talking about the switch on the WCG200 being in the off position, but the cord yanked out from the wall or a power outage occurring) for more than five minutes, some of my programmed settings for my secure network change and I can no longer connect. My SSID and "infrastructure" settings remain, but something else involving my WEP configuration is lost and I have to hard reset (paper clip) my WCG200 to reconfigure it. It has happened three times this year when lightning storms rolled through and I had unplugged the modem from the wall. Third, when you're working in the integrated web browser and you want to make your network secure, the SAVE button does not work across all pages you are editing -- you have to SAVE, reconfigure your Windows network settings and then get back into the WCG200's web browser to configure the next items. They should have made the SAVE button work across all web pages or at least have all settings configured on one page -- lame. Please be careful purchasing this product for a Toshiba laptop and if you're connecting to TWC in North Carolina.

5 Star ReviewI've been holding out on buying a wireless access ...

Strengths:

Great all-in-one package, excellent firewall features, easy set up

Weaknesses:

Can't use it if switch to DSL or BPL in the future

Posted Mar 13, 2004 - I've been holding out on buying a wireless access point for my home for quite awhile, more because of laziness than anything else. However, when I saw that this product was a 802.11g access point *and* cable modem in one package, I ordered it immediately. The product is very easy to set up and has a lot of features in the firewall, especially settings for gaming. I've had no problems with signal strength when using my Proxim 8470 wireless card or my Sony Clie Wi-Fi card. Though it still uses WEP encryption to protect unauthorized users from using the connection (WEP encryption can be hacked), it will allow you to limit which MAC addresses that can have access, providing a little more security. One feature that I wish was added is a "WAN" port like access points without an integrated cable modem. If I choose to switch to DSL or BPL (broadband over power lines) in the future, I won't be able to use this product due to the missing WAN port. However, as long as I'm using broadband over cable, I have an excellent product and no longer have to pay the cable modem lease fee from my cable provider.

Strengths:

All-in-one! Cable modem/gateway, routher, wireless connectivity.

Weaknesses:

Didn't work right away with Comcast. Had to deal with the cranky cable guy leaving their rental modem and then setting the WCG200 up myself.

Posted Jul 27, 2004 - This is a great all in one package with very useful tools (hardware firewall, wireless encryption, etc.). The wireless and router features worked perfectly without any fuss on my home network. The cable modem feature took a while to get working, but I blame this wholly on Comcast (the cable company). Thankfully I'm slightly savvy with this sort of stuff, but beware if you aren't.

Strengths:

Easy to Install Wireless or Wired USB or Ethernet Modem, Router, VPN and Firewall All in one

Weaknesses:

Userguide is Adobe Acrobat File (I would prefer a hard copy)

Posted Nov 28, 2004 - I purchased my Linksys WCG200 yesterday and went directly to the house and installed it. The most dificult step in the installation was calling my ISP to have them delete my current MAC ID and register my new MAC ID of the modem. Currently I am using one connection to my PC through USB (10 Mbps) and one connection to the wifes PC (Ethernet) and one connection to the Xbox (Wireless). All connections maintained prvious download ratesand there has been no conflicts. The Linksys WCG200 comes with VPN support, a Firewall (You can lock down individual ports) and it also supports 802.11b or 802.11g wireless. You can enable or disable the wireless Channels. Website blocking is another great feature of this gateway. You can block sites that you may not want your children or others to visit from your PC or any other PC on the network. You can block a MAC ID (on your network) from accessing the internet on certain days and certain times. i.e. You can block a MAC ID from a childs PC after 8pm everynight until 12 noon the next day. Receive email alerts from the router when an intrution is detected. This gateway has many features that most wireless or wired home networking routers do not have. I would recomend this product to a beginer or advanced user wanting to set up a home or small office network.

Strengths:

All in one solution (less wire clutter): modem, firewall, router, wireless access point, 24/7 customer service, reputation.

Weaknesses:

Instruction on configuration.

Posted Oct 29, 2004 - Did a little bit of research, this product was highly recommended, found a good price on an Amazon retailer (use rebates if possible). With little knowledge on gadgets, was apprehensive about self-configuration. But took me a little over an hour after opening the box. Read other reviews that advised on hooking up the gateway before the wireless card. Also made sure to call the cable company to transfer service from the old modem to the new. The configuration instructions weren't entirely clear. Used the Windows XP wireless connection wizard which helped. With a little luck, I got it to work. Still trying to figure out the security encryption settings though. Using a budget laptop, this gateway coupled with a WPC54GS wireless card w/ Speedbooster exceeded my expectations. The speed is just as fast as a direct connection.

1 Star Review Caveat Emptor

Strengths:

Modem and router comes in one unit. Instant hookup.

Weaknesses:

Weak signal, constant drops.

Posted Jul 26, 2006 - I had this unit for almost a month. The cable connection would drop constantly. Sometimes, it stayed up for a while, and other times, it would drop every few minutes. I had to turn the power off and on numerous times. I noticed that it tended to drop the cable connection during heavy file downloads. Finally, I couldn't even log onto the access point even though I can see it on the survey. I finally got rid of it and bought the WRT54GS(broadband router with speedbooster). I hook this one up to a cheap cable modem (webstar) the cable company gave out for free. This set up worked like charm. I have much great signal strength as well. With this setup, I have not had any drops for the last two days of constantly running and downloading. My wireless PCI adapter is a Linksys WMP54GS with speedbooster.

4 Star Review Great Cable modem/Router/Switch

Strengths:

Easy setup and connection

Weaknesses:

None found so far

Posted Sep 28, 2005 - Setting up the Cable model/Gateway/Hub was incredibly easy. In less than five minutes I had removed the NICs from my computer and installed a wireless USB network adapter (WUSB54G) and connected to the network.

2 Star Review Big Problems w/ WCG200 v.2

Strengths:

All in one - really nice concept

Weaknesses:

Had Bad unit - constantly dropped connection. Wireless should be faster than regular "g" (Speedbooster would be nice)

Posted Aug 8, 2006 - I have had my WCG200 v.2 for about 2 months. About a month ago, I noticed that my connection was CONSTANTLY dropping. This is a REAL pain when you have Vonage and your phones are going down all the time. Sometimes I would stay connected for most of the day, other times, 5 minutes would be all I could get. Optimum Online came to my home twice, changed connectors at the curb and even installed a new undergroud cable - still, I was losing my connection. I went to Optonline's store and got a replacement Modem and used my old Linksys Wireless Router and my connection hasn't gone down in over a week. Conclusion... WCG200 is at fault! So, I just got a replacement from Linksys and I have yet to hook it up. The odd thing is that they did NOT ship me Ver. 2. They shipped the original version with older firmware and TWO antennas. Version 2 has only one antenna. I called Linksys to complain and they told me that this is all they are shipping now (the original version - 2 antennas). Does anyone know if there is a real difference between the original and ver. 2?? Maybe ver. 2 was causing all of the problems? I will install later this week and will let you folks know if this replacement unit solves my problem.

2 Star Review Real problems with this Gateway

Strengths:

All in one unit, simple setup

Weaknesses:

Weak signal, drops connection, WEP security did not work with all my devices

Posted Nov 18, 2006 - I used this gateway for 2 months and finally gave up. When everything is working with this unit it performs great, my problem was it never consistently worked. The wireless signal was great if I was no further away than 100 feet, past that the signal got weaker and weaker and at 500 feet away I received no signal at all. About once a day the connection was dropped and I had to wait while the gateway re-established the connection, sometimes this took 2-3 minutes. I could never get WEP security to work with all my devices; I had to move to using WPA security on all my wireless devices. I went back to using a reasonably priced cable modem and a good wireless router.

1 Star Review Terrible Product

Strengths:

All in one, that's about it..

Weaknesses:

Bad compatibility, confusing errors, and slow reconnect.

Posted Oct 1, 2006 - I'm a bit confused at this thing. I bought it origionally because it sounded convient only having one modem/router. The wireless connection drops me randomly, or whenever I run sustained bandwidth programs. It took comcast 3 hours to get it working because it would only support dsl line speed of 8mbps (the other modes apparently didn't work.) Several times my settings would dissappear, making me reenter them again. Additionally using the ports made the wireless signal even more unstable. I get 50-70% signal strength when it's about 20 feet away.. compared to my old DSL Actiontec modem/wireless hardware that had ~98% with NO drops. I'm sincerely dissappointed with this product, and the $150 price tag. Only the wired ports work reliably.. Linksys, you should know better!

5 Star Review Good quality

Strengths:

This is a great all in one unit. It cut down on my wire clutter and freed up an outlet on my power strip. I have a rather extensive home network and this product hasn't let me down yet.

Weaknesses:

WEP is a little hard to get working with no linksys products.

Posted Jan 20, 2006 - This is a great all in one solution. It handles the 3 computers on my network with ease. I have one wired desktop and 2 wireless PC's (one desktop on notebook) I haven't been able to get the WEP To work with my none linksys network card yet and after about an hour of messing with it I finally just gave up for the moment.

5 Star Review No Complaints here

Strengths:

Easy set up

Weaknesses:

None that I can find

Posted 4 weeks ago - I purchased this to replace a Motorola modem, so that I could use my computer anywhere in the house. It works just fine. Have not experienced any dropped signals that I have read about from other posters. And it was a snap to set up. Just plugged it in, called my cable provider with the MAC address, and retieved the security password and put it in my laptop. Total time elapsed, 10 minutes.
