The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect both screaming fast Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. Once your computers are connected to the Router and the Internet, they can communicate with each other too, sharing resources and files. All your computers can print on a shared printer connected anywhere in the house. And your computers can share all kinds of files -- music, digital pictures, and documents. Keep all your digital music on one computer, and listen to it anywhere in the house. Organize all of your family's digital pictures in one place, to simplify finding the ones you want, and easing backup to CD-R. Utilize extra free space on one computer when another's hard drive starts to fill up. minimize

5 Star Review Good

Strengths:

3rd party firmware, good performance with optional firmware.

Weaknesses:

Linksys firmware

Posted Apr 3, 2008 - The wrt54gl is a good router with ok performance. The good thing about wrt54gl over wrt54gs and wrt54g that it can be flashed with 3rd part firmware without complicated procedure. I ran some test on speedtest.net with qos enabled router got 8ms ping compared to dlink dir655 7ms. Though router doesn't disconnect itself like dir655. Some people like wireless N router so don't. Compared to dlink dir655 wireless N router and wrt54gl with custom firmware, both have about same range. Dir655 has higher throughout rate but wrt54gl is more consitant.

5 Star Review Linksys WRT54GL Router

Strengths:

Very easy to set up.

Weaknesses:

None so far.

Posted Jul 13, 2006 - This router was very easy to set up. I have 2 laptops and a desktop running off of it, and no problems as of yet. I understand there is some third party software that will extend the features of this router. Going to try that out when I get a chance.

4 Star Review Excellent Router

Strengths:

This router is easy to setup! The one-step button on the front of the router is exactly that - ONE STEP! I decided upon this product after reading other reviews outlining the product's reliability.

Weaknesses:

NONE

Posted Mar 11, 2006 - The Linksys WRT-54GL is an excellent product. The one step set up button works just as proclaimed! I am not a techie. It took me about 15 minutes to go through the included CD, and complete the set up. Truly an easy product to use, just right out of the box. If you want a product that is reliable, and easy to set up right out of the box, you must consider this product. This product was my first foray into wireless networking, and I am pleased with the results.

5 Star Review Rock solid reliability, linux-based software make GL the better brother

Strengths:

Essentially an older sibling of the WRT54G (v4.0 hardware under the hood) offering the versatility and reliability on which the Linksys 54G router built its reputation over the years.

Weaknesses:

Effectively paying a premium for older (better) hardware.

Posted May 31, 2006 - After hearing reports of connection drops with the WRT54G, it was an easy choice to go for the sure bet in the WRT54GL. They'll both do the job, but the Linux software upgradability and steady wireless connections of the GL at a few dollars more make it the better buy. The software might not be the easiest for beginners, but that's just a result of all the options and features it puts together in one product. It's targeted toward the Linux community, but everyone can benefit from its advantages. Linksys, owned by Cisco, is the best compromise between price and reliability for the home user, definitely stick with them over cheaper brands - especially if you are attempting to maintain wireless connections over distances/throughout larger homes, where you'll appreciate the large dual antennae.

5 Star Review Easy set up or lots of options, the choice is yours.

Strengths:

Best part about this router is the ability to flash it with new firmware from the linux community.

Weaknesses:

None.

Posted Aug 9, 2006 - The router is easy to set up with the included instructions. Just install the software first then plug the router in. Additionally, for those that want to do more with this router there is so much information about the upgrades, but I like this link for beginners to get started: www.lifehacker.com/sof... The reason I got this router was for the ability to adjust bandwidth according to priority. I wanted the sunrocket gizmo to get priority over the downloads. So far, so good.

5 Star Review Great router, linux-based 3rd party firmware makes it even better.

Strengths:

Great performance, very reliable, 4MB flash that can have 3rd party (linux) firmware installed.

Weaknesses:

Linksys downgraded the flash on the WRT54G, so people wanting a full featured linux firmware image need to get this model (WRT54GL).

Posted Jun 6, 2006 - I'm not sure how the default firmware works (it supposedly has QoS and stuff now). Installed 3rd party firmware (dd-wrt) without issue, works flawlessly. Great speed, great reliability, great range, great router for linux enthusiasts.

3 Star Review Linksys CABLE/ DSL RTR 802.11G W/ SWITCH

Strengths:

3rd party firmware upgradeable

Weaknesses:

More expensive than other brand.

Posted Sep 30, 2006 - Actually, this is an old model of Liksys WRT54G (version 4 or lower) which has more capacity for the firmware than these day's model (version 5). You can upgrade the firmware with 3rd party firmware.

3 Star Review Satisfied

Strengths:

Set-up was not too difficult.

Weaknesses:

Some of the instructions are ambiguous and confusing at times. The $10+ premium compared to WRT54G.

Posted Jul 20, 2006 - I am using it in conjunction with my Bellsouth DSL service and Westell modem. Overall, I am satisfied with it. The "SecureEasy" setup was not quite easy and ambiguous. I wish the printed manual was provided in the box along with the documentation on the CD-ROM. However, I am not sure if this Linux based product is worth the premium compared to WRT45G unless one were to take advantage of some alternate (warranty voiding) firmware.

1 Star Review Doesn't have an advertised feature

Strengths:

Basic functionality works. Web-based config tool is easy to use.

Weaknesses:

Linksys's product guide for this router describes the ability to set "inbound traffic" access restrictions, based on source and destination IP addresses and ports. No such ability actually exists.

Posted Feb 2, 2006 - Continuing the "weaknesses" thread, the "access restrictions" panel does not actually offer the capability to set inbound policies, even though the help bar for that panel mentions it (as well as the product guide). This is with the initial firmware (v. 4.30.0) as well as the latest one from linksys, v. 4.30.2. Linksys technical support also claimed the feature does not exist.

3 Star Review They need MAC Support

Strengths:

Performing well, I have a MAC and a PC both hooked up.

Weaknesses:

'Easy One Step CD' does not apply to MAC Users. Took several hours to make it work.

Posted Sep 3, 2007 - Now that it is working, I like it. However, would it hurt them to add MAC setup to their CD? My scanner has it.... My digital camera has it.... It took several hours to make it work right. On screen help was not all that helpful, and the phone support was not all that pleasant. The best thing I can say about it was that the wait was very short.

5 Star Review Excellent Router for the money!

Strengths:

Upgradeable with firmware, All-in-one Internet-sharing router, 4-port switch, and Wireless-G (802.11g) access point.

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Aug 29, 2006 - This Linksys router is the best router all time. You will need this router, since it has WPA ability. Since WEP 128 is almost useless for protecting against specific attacks to your network I strongly recommend using WPA. I found it easy to set up with security and easy to connect to wireless devices. Reception is good all over the house. This router is rock solid with the Cisco branded Linksys. Excellent buy!
