Linksys Is Now On My NEVER-BUY-FROM-THEM List

Strengths: You tell me

Weakness: Providing a working device without customer hassle

I helped a very hesitant relative pick out a wireless router for his home and we decided Linksys was the most inexpensive on the shelf providing the needed capabilities.

Now you can change the word "inexpensive" to "cheapest" with all the connotations that word has about product quality.

The WRT54GS stopped working after 2 months, which was 1 month beyond the distributing store's return policy and of course, 10 months or 22 months? before the Linksys warranty ends (depending on whether it was a year or 2-year warranty).

Once the tech support verified that the device was beyond user servicability---no LED lights at all came on when the power was hooked up...we didn't know if it was a dead AC adaptor or a burnt-out board in the device----they issued a return merchandise authorization (RMA), which itself was hard to get because the first tech support guy apparently did not register the RMA number---and it did not help that he barely knew how to speak intelligible English----and it took a 2nd call to get a new RMA. When my relative learned he would have to print out two RMA labels---which were not made printable in emails from Linksys----and that he would have to pay for shipping before Linksys send out a replacement---which he assumed would be just as defective, my relative told me that he has a simple policy on NOTHING-BUT-HASSLE warranties: and that is that if the product is defective and breaks within the term, he eats the cost but will never buy a product from the maker again. He said even if he got the replacement and it ended up working without defect for years, he would probably never buy from the manufacturer again and would warn others from doing so.

And I agree.

At least there are companies out there who warranty their products against defects and assume all the costs associated with replacement.

Linksys is not one of them.

If a company will NOT assume the costs of replacing their defective products (with the exception of the time and hassle of the user in doing shipping and handling), then their products better work and work perfectly at least through the warranted period. Otherwise, you can write off another customer of that manufacturer and all whom he has influence over.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Works - Works well!

Weakness: None I've come across

What can I say, this router was easy to set up and works like a champ. I've always had good experiences with Linksys and will continue to purchase their goods.

I recently purchased the Linksys WRT54GS router with SpeedBooster and 2 WMP54GS PCI adapters w/SpeedBooster cards for my 2 desktop pcs. In short, they work great. I get connection speeds from 54 - 125 MHz on both computers, one on the same floor, one upstairs. I use the router to connect to my DSL modem which came with my Earthlink DSL subscription. I knew almost nothing about the wireless security so I was a little hesitant to go wireless - not a problem at all. Linksys has a great tutorial on their website which explains the different types of encryption. Instead of the old WEP, I switched to WPA-PSK which is much more secure (my old wireless card, SMC 54Mhz would not support the new WPA standard). When you logon to your router (much like a website) it even has its own tutorial info if you need it. I got the system up and running right away. I did take me a couple hours of reading up on the encryption stuff to get up to speed on that though. Summary: It works great. I highly recommend this product.

easy, no idiots guide needed

Strengths: has install CD and also the quick-setup option, ease of set-up

Weakness: same as any wireless, if you close the doors in your house, your signal goes down.

take your time, read the instructions, used the CD and also the quick-setup option, go to router website, there are lots of help options to click on. I bought matching pc card. Had no conflicts with xp/sp2. One is a Dell desktop pc with 10/100/1000 ethernet and win XP/sp2 Media Center, the other has 10/100 ethernet with XP/sp2 that I built myself, also a desktop.
Install CD first on Main PC, then install router. I then installed card in other PC, then CD for wireless card. Use quick set-up button, had to try this three times, but did work.
Then open up windows xp control panel and use the network wizard for wireless setup, or go to linksys website and use the quick setup feature.
Alot of people say it only took 10 minutes, (sure it did). Im being honest here, including installing the wireless card it really did only take about 45 minutes from start to finish and this is the very first network I have ever tried.
Don't be afraid to try it yourself, it really is a simple project with little skills needed.

UPDATE I have been using this system now for almost 7 months. It still works great. Every once in awhile, you might have to press the reset button on the router. I have cable internet, so I unplug the cable from the modem for about 2 minutes and also I unplug the power cord for the router, same amount of time. Then plug in the cable, followed by the router plug. On the front of the router, the flashing light is the reset button, press it. This will connect the two computers. To avoid all of this, I went to the Linksys website and used the easy connect feature and my system is running just fine. It has been three months since I had to unplug and reset since I used the website. You can also saved the program for the easy connect to your desktop so you don't have to keep going back to the website. I hope this update helps and enjoy your wireless freedom.(UPDATED DEC 30, 2007 ) Almost 2 years now and still working perfectly. I have added a laptop to my Network also. Just use your windows Network Wizard for easy install. I would buy this product again without a doubt. I am sold on linksys products.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Easy to use, Good security features.

Weakness: Range could be better

This router is very easy to use, The range could be better. With a "speedbooster" card for your notebook ($80 at bestbuy) you can get better range and use the speedboosting. I highly remend this router for the price. This is my third Linksys product, I am very satisfied with the line.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Great signal strength, have 80% signal 4 rooms and 1 story away.

Weakness: 802.11B doesn't support many "high security" levels, so devices (PDA's especially) which don't yet use 802.11G will require you to bust security down to 128 bit WEP.

I really like this router, I bought it the day it became available at BestBuy (April 2004); in fact I bought this about 2 weeks before I bought my wireless card for it ;)...

The built in router is definitely nice, I myself reserve the ports on the router for daisy chaining to other devices (switches and my Vonage router).

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a high security wireless system, and even those running Personal Telco. It's powerful where it needs to be, and easy to use where it's needed.

My only beef is that you only get to forward 10 different port ranges.

Linksys WRT54GS version 2.0

Strengths: Easy to setup. Reliabe. Speed and range are very good. High security wireless. No interfence with other wireless devices.

Weakness: none

Just put in a CD and follow its instruction to setup the router. The router gives excellent signal strength and fast speed for wireless. Just put it in higher ground for more range. It has WAP high security for wireless. Just remember to change the router's password and activate WAP (new firmware 4.70.6 makes it easier to do this). It doesn't interfence with other 2.4 GHz devices like phones. My wired LAN works great too. No wonder that Linksys still gets a major share in router market.
I really like this product. It is very reliable. It is the high grade product that money can buy. I will buy from Linksys again.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Good Signal Strength.

Weakness: Little bit expensive.

Installing was very easy. Wireless range is excellent. Network speed is high. I use different cards including Cisco Aironet, Linksys and Netgear PC cards with this router. All cards works great with this router. I can get 95% of cable modem bandwidth on the note book computers even if I use 128 bit encryption on my router. I would recommend this to anyone.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Very fast speeds, and strong signal throughout my 2000 sq/ft house. Works great with my Netgear b/g pc card. Nothing beats working from your backyard. =)

Weakness: Strong security not enabled by default. No complete list of updates for their firmware, only incremental.

This wireless router is great. I was able to install it and have it connected to my laptop wirelessly in about 30 minutes. It would've been 2 minutes, but I'm security conscious and made sure to immediately 1) change the default password 2) enable 128bit WEP encryption 3) update to the latest firmware 4) set port forwarding for ports 80 and 443 to redirect to a non-existant ip address. The last step was to guard against a weakness in the admin security with remote administration. It may have been fixed in a firmware update, but I found no mention of it, and better safe than sorry. Wireless is great, but know what you're doing!

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

I recently purchased the WRT54GS and found quickly that I needed a stronger signal if I intended to download a PDF file..Sound advice from those who know wireless (this is my first) advised me to try high gain antennas first. So I added the Lynksys HGA7T.It still only receives 11-18mbps but the transfer rate tripled.I am now going to wall mount it using the Linksys SMO1.Go to Linksys.com,ckick on products>accessories. My laptop is in a building about 80ft away and reception is perfect!!!

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Runs Linux, easy to upgrade, strong signal coverage, fast

Weakness: The default web UI could use a little more work, but custom firmware solves this for the most part

This wireless router is a dream. The main reason I bought it is because it runs linux and is highly configurable, especially if one installs one of the custom firmwares available on various websites. Just like the WRT54G, this router has a huge community and following, which I value a lot. Despite not having a "speedboost" wireless card, wireless connections are still very fast. I'm also pleased with the security settings available on this router, which is very important on a wireless router.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Great speed- I can't even tell I'm not hard-wired into my wall outlet!

Weakness: Setup instructions leave a lot to be desired.

This product works like a charm! The speed is incredible and there is no interference with other devices in my apartment (i.e., cordless phones). Very impressed with performance.

Setup disks did not work at all- they could not detect my active internet detection. Manual, step by step installation from the instruction card was necessary. Also, be advised- the router has to be installed before the card, or else your computer will not pick up the signal!

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: - Strong clear signal - No interference with 2.4GHz phone - No problems with connectivity - Connected VoIP phone without a hitch

Weakness: - Would not play with Asante wireless card - Had to use Linksys brand card

I have had no problems with the router and the connectivity thus far. Only time will tell if things will get ugly. I am not sure if the Speedbooster is actually boosting anything.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: signal, ease of use, style

Weakness: none

I'm a huge fan of Linksys products, and the takeover by Cisco doesn't seem to have damaged them in any way. This product is pretty much 100% advertised for Windows users, but I also use it for my Apple computers (Airport/AirportExtreme enabled) and have no problem whatsoever. It's very easy to install, and the web-based administrative interface is full of features that you can grow into or just ignore. I already had a Linksys router for years with the sambe stackable design, but added this one to it so I could start my wireless network. The connection speed is very fast, and for simple things like email or web surfing, there is no noticable difference between this and my wired computers. Even with downloads, it's very fast.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Reliability and great price

This linksys router is very reliable. I just ordered an additional one for my home after using it successfully at the office for several months. For the price, this item really can't be beaten.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Easy to setup, strong signal.

Weakness: none

I had a d-link DI-614+ wireless router before this one. The DI-614+ sometimes stop working when I use eDonkey for a long time. Had no problem with this linksys router at all. Signal is strong and I can go online with my laptop in my backyard. Setup up is very easy if you did that before. Highly recommended.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Builds on the strenghts of the WRT54Gv2 by adding SpeedBooster (Broadcom's Afterburner technology for 35% father throughput on 802.11g) and twice the Flash and System RAM.

Weakness: 12V power supply makes it incompatible with Linksys WAPPOE Power over Ethernet kit.

This highly flexible router is great for both networking novices and home networking gurus. For the power user there are TONS of features that can be added through 3rd party firmware (www.linksysinfo.org for Linksys Users Group & firmware info). For the novice, the router is plug and play. I purchased the WRT54GS to complement my current WRT54G v1.0 in a WDS network. So far, the GS only seems faster and more stable - a great evolution of an already great product!

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Speed boost really is noticable. Once the router is set up all my wireless devices connected up with ease.

Weakness: During the CD setup it asked you for IP information from your ISP and it would have been much better if they were more explicit as to the info needed. After a few tries I finally got the right subnet

I've been using a 2WIRE home node for about three years and I always had problems loosing my internet connections through the wireless devices. This year we moved into a new house with a few spots that have a really weak signal. Although all of my Wireless adapters where all Linksys they still only worked off and on with the 2WIRE. I thought if I finally upgraded to a Linksys wireless router all would be fine. Boy was I right not only are all my wireless PCs and notebooks operating flawlessly using DHCP the signal strength has almost doubled. And those rooms that were so bad in the past that I couldn't even get a connection are now 50%+ connection strength. I couldn't be more pleased now that I've gone totally Linksys from end-to-end. I heard that the WRT54G had some performance problems and since I know I had some dead spots in my house I went with the WRT54GS (speedbooster) --- it was worth every penny.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Inexpensive, parental controls, easy setup

Weakness: Poor technical support, parental controls didn't work at first.

I was using a Netgear 802.11b router and wanted to move up to a 802.11g router. I was going to buy another Netgear router until I read about the parental control feature of the WRT54GS router. This feature requires you to pay a subscription but I thought it would be well worth it. My son has his own computer which I had parental control software installed on. This software worked great but when he used the computer in the familyroom there was no protection. With this Linksys router whenever he opens a browser he has to sign on to the account I set up for him; he's protected no mater what computer on the network he uses. This worked for about a week then it quit working. It works by somehow using Netopia's server which evidentially goes down a lot. The router is very easy to set up and the parental controls is very customizable; I just wish it would work all the time. Tech support is no help. --- They must have worked out their problem with the Parental Controls because it works great now.

Linksys WIRELESS G BROADBAND ROUTER WITH SPEEDBOOSTER

Strengths: Reasonably easy to setup and configure. Option to prevent management of the device via wireless link.

Weakness: Wireless signal keeps cutting out

I've had my unit for a month now. Downloading of files over 5MB ran at 16Kbps! An upgrade to the latest firmware fixed this.

Every 5 days or so I have to reboot the device because it completely looses its wireless signal.
Linksys support advise changing the channel and positioning the unit well away from the phone and if that fails upgrading the firmware.

I have the latest firmware and the unit is not near a phone, so my only hope is to try changing the channel.

My friend has the non-speedboost version and says he has had no problems with the wireless signal dropping.

I don't know how Linksys can continue to sell such a heap of junk.

I certainly would not recommend this unit to anyone.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Point of comparison is a Linksys BEFSR41 v2 (The most popular wired Linksys router out there)

Here's something interesting that other reviews may not have covered:
The WRG54GS router's built-in software (when you type in 192.168.1.1 in your browser) has better visual appeal than older routers, has a better user interface, and loads faster too when you click a button.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Good performance when running.

Weakness: 1st unit died within 14 hours of initial installation. RMA process is terrible since it requires the customer to pay for shipping, when the faulty equipmet is the manufacturer's fault.

PLEASE do yourself a favor and only buy a product like this from a local store or a site that will guarantee shipping for RMA swap. These units are great when they are working, but they can easily fry; whether it be because of a power surge or even a heavy electrical storm. Do yourself a favor and do not skimp on surge protection on power AND rj45 ports.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: easy settings good processing power speedboost works but only under win2k/xp with speedboost enabled equipments fair supports (800 24/7) can be hacked w/ linux source code from linksys reliable

Weakness: not certified wifi equipments signal weakens quicker than others as getting far away from it ugly & big no speed boost for non xp/2k os

this is inexpensive 802.11g with speed boost which only works with other speed boost enabled equipments & quite expensive. fairly fast & reliable no crash for 20 days so far. 802.11b router from linksys crashed about once every 2 weeks not bad compare to microsoft routers
very ugly looking especially when it was setup vertically. not good coverage distance. no performance hit with encryption no printer server or usb ports for external hard disk drives @ same price you can also get printer server from smc or io gear without speed boost

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Takes up little space, easy install, straight forward instructions, great customer support, easy to read indicator lights

Weakness: none that I've found

I researched several wireless routers and found the Linksys WIRELESS G BROADBAND ROUTER WITH SPEEDBOOSTER the best one to fit my needs. Also, I found the test results at www.pcmag.com... rated the Linksys WIRELESS G BROADBAND ROUTER WITH SPEEDBOOSTER as having the best performance. This is the first router I've owned, and I was very pleased with how quickly I was able to set it up. Calling the customer support number, I was able to speak to a representative in a short amount of time and all of my questions were answered quickly and efficiently. I highly recommend this router to anyone in the market for a wireless router.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: The product works

Weakness: The customer service is completely incompetent

I can not believe the incompetence of Linksys's customer service. After setting up a wired/wireless network I called for help making it secure. 4 hours and 4 phone calls later my internet service didn't work, my network didn't work, my internet service didn't work, my router didn't work, and Linksys said it was a faulty system (it had worked before I called for help). I had to call Earthlink to fix the internet connection and then bought a Motorola. They had it fixed and secure in 15 minutes. I told a friend this story and she said she had a friend with a similar Linksys customer service nightmare. Beware!

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: easy setup - excellent tech support

Weakness: manuals

I have had the DLink superG for about 4 or 5 months now. It was working flawlessly with my old dell laptop. However, when I got my new laptop with XP Pro, it gave me some problems. I tried to suffer with it for a while before actually calling tech support. When I did call, the were extremely friendly and helpful. I actually talked to someone in California and not India or the Philippines. Nice to know they don't offshore tech support! The service tech walked me through the configurations needed to make the router work properly and gave me a case id number if I have problems in the future. Great support staff. I'd reccomend DLink to anyone.

Linksys WRT54GS Wireless Broadband Router

Strengths: Easy to setup

Weakness: Horrible customer service, looses signal to much.

I have been very happy with Linksys products until buying the router and supporting PCI cards with Speed booster. I have owned a few wireless routers and I have ever had problems loosing signals. I sent the first one back and I got the latest version back but it still drops it's signal when transferring or saving files over 2MB on the network. I will never buy another product from this company just because the customer service is completely incompetent and was unable to help me at all.

Strengths: EASY TO INSTALL, FAST

Weakness: DISCONNECTS FRECUENTLY

I USED TO HAVE A WIRED LINKSYS ROUTER AND WAS VERY HAPPY UNTIL I DECIDED TO GO WIRELESS!!...SURPRISE! TRIED THE MICROVAWE, CORDLESS PHONE, TV, EXCHENGE IT,EVEN THE GAS STOVE, YOU NAME IT, CANT FIND WHAT IS CAUSING INTERFERENCE.

WORST PRODUCT/COMPANY OF ALL TIME

Strengths: NOTHING

Weakness: EVERYTHING

THIS PRODUCT IS HORRIBLE, JUST LIKE ALL LINKSYS PRODUCTS, I HAVE SET UP MANY ROUTERS FROM LINKSYS AND BELKIN BEFORE, AND BELKIN MAKES SETTING UP A LINKSYS LOOK LIKE BIONUCLEAR CHEMISTRY. I TRIED TO SET UP THE WRT54GS FOR DAYS, TALKED TO THE STUPID FOREIGN TECH HELP, WHO ONLY TOLD ME TO GO ONLINE AND READ THE HELP THERE, WHICH DIDN'T HELP AT ALL AND WAS THE REASON I CALLED! VERY VERY VERY IMCOMPATIBLE WITH MAC'S AND EVEN CAUSED MY HARD-WIRED DESKTOP TO NOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. RETURNED THE LINKSYS-BOUGHT ANOTHER BELKIN ROUTER--2 MINUTES EVERYTHING WORKED GREAT, PERFECT COMPATIBILITY WITH MAC--IF YOU ARE NOT STEPHEN HAWKING, DO NOT BUY A LINKSYS UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO SPLIT ATOMS AND TRAVEL AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT EASILY.

Great Wireless Router

Strengths: Simple, and easy to use.

Weakness: Would like some monitoring software just for giggles.`

I had never done a home network and was intimidated at trying after reading some others' horror stories.

All of my worry was for naught. This thing is totally plug 'n play with my custom built Home Desktop and my HP Pavilion notebook. Desktop is running XP, laptop is running Vista Premium Home.

Some folks said NOT to run the CD first. I don't know why, all it does is tell you how to hook things up. My router is old. I had bought it a few years ago anticipating working more from home, but, that never panned out, so I just left the router in the box. I had thought about returning it and getting a newer N router, but, saw way too many horror stories about those.

I took the plunge and hooked this thing up by the directions on the CD, and wahla, no problems at all. It's been working for a week w/out a hitch. I ran the firmware upgrade and still NO problems.

Some others who have problems with this unit just have bad luck. This thing is just too simple to goof up. Really, no smoke, simple easy and works great!!

I think it is a great router...

Strengths: connection stability, i never loose connection in the entire office, and a great price.

Weakness: so far it has not worked as well with my collegues older laptop configuration. He occasionally looses connection.

I really don't know why all the poor reviews.... I installed this router in my office network when i was forced to replace an older wireless router that was damaged by an electrical storm. We had no prior experience with linnsys, but it came reccomended by a customer of ours. I am glad he did so because this router blows the old belkin away! everyone in the office has notice an improvement and a decrease in lost signals. In a few words, "A Great wireless G router, espesial for the price!" in fact, based on my experience here, I just purchased the new linksys wireless N router. I will be reviewing it soon aswell.

Linksys router

Strengths: Initial set up.

Weakness: Tech support

Mine died after 3 months. Spent many hours trying to get it going again with tech support. It was hard to communicate with tech people because English was not their first language. They replaced it twice, I had to pay return shipping. It still didn't work. In the end tech support would put me on hold and hang up.

Easy installation, very good working with XP Pro &...

Strengths: - Easy installation for windows XP & Vista - Easy upgrade firmware

Weakness: - Should have a ON/OFF button - powerful antenna should be provided instead of norma lones. - doesn't have user manual

First of all I intended to purchase wireless draft-N router. After taking a lot time reading user's reviews & technical reviews, I concluded just waste money to buy those stuff & anyway N-technology is just draft only. The draft-N might be considered is WRT330N. But this router's expensive. So I decided to go with cheaper WRT54GS at BestBuy (version 7.0). It works great from the first time installation. At present I'm running dual-boot (XP Pro & Vista Ultimate) so I have to do installation twice: full & complete setup at the first time (on XP) & just re-enter SSID & psw at the 2nd time (on Vista). My laptop is far away about 100ft from my WRT54GS, but it's still works great & the speed's quite good. Very highly reccommended this router for those just need 802.11g & 802.11b & note that you should choose version 7 (the latest from LinkSys).
One more thing I shuold say about user manual. Going together with WRT54GS is a CD (inluding driver & software), brochure, installation guide, & frequently asked questions (too simple). It doesn't have a user manual to show about trouble shooting so users know to go & find a solution such as how to upgrade a firmware, etc. I reccommend about an official forum on the LinkSys web-site at forums.linksys.com/... . You can find several useful solution from this.

Simply easy and good

Strengths: Easy to setup, logical

Weakness: I'm not aware of any

It gives you many different options. If you are not just a person who knows only how to press next, next, next when you setup something new, you can easly setup this router. With the product you receive manual which is easy and understandable. Can be compare with manuals for dummies. You don't need more then half hour and your network is running perfectly.

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster (WRT54GS v4)
