D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Router/AP

Strengths: Small size, Configurable by a switch as either an Access point, Router or client mode. Reset button resets only the active mode and other modes. Will run off of USB power source.

Weakness: Configuration requires user to manually set a static IP address on PC. Only 1 ethernet port that switches to either lan or wan functions based on mode. Cables are a little bulky and not retractable.

I'm very pleased with this product. As someone who travels it is very versatile. I can use it as an access point at hotels that don't have wireless in the room, thus freeing me from the desk. I've used the Client Access mode to attach to wireless networks, then plug my Vonage voip phone device into. Then I've got my voip phone even at wireless hotels.
The option to power from a USB plug is great especially when hotel room outlets are scarce.
The reset button only resets the active device mode. This is nice so that you don't have to reset all 3 modes if a problem arises.

I wish it had 2 ethernet ports for both a WAN and and a separate LAN port. The one ethernet port changes to either a LAN or WAN port depending on what mode it is in (WAN in Router mode and LAN in Access Point and Client modes). If it had 2 ports you could have a wired connection simultaneously when switched to the Access point and Router modes.

For this to be the perfect device it would need the following:
Retractable cables and a smaller power transformer or even an integrated one would be nice.
Both WAN and LAN ethernet ports.
A stereo out port would be nice (like the Apple travel router).
Easier first time configuration software that could configure the device via something other than a static TCP/IP address (which requires a user to setup manually Not every enduser will be comfortable doing this task.

All in all a very powerfull little package, albeit not the simplest. I still recommend it.

Small, Cute, and Good Value

Strengths: Small size, mobility, has client mode funtionality

Weakness: users manual not very informative

This is a cute little thing and it works well too! USB power capabilities are a plus and the equipment seems pretty sturdy for the tiny size. Definitely a winner!

D-Link Wireless-g Pocket Router Review

Strengths: Compact design, easy to set up and strong signal.

Weakness: none so far

D-Link wireless-g pocket router is a much better choice compares to the similar one provided by Netgear. It's easy to set up and the signal is strong with little interference. I think this is really a good buy with proper price.

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router

Strengths: small size. easy setup. can run off a usb port only, so you don't always need the ac adapter.

Weakness: cables would be better if they were retractable, so you wouldn't have so much clutter.

I found this product very easy to install and use. It is small and easy to carry around. Plus it can function as a router, or as a client to connect to existing network. This comes in handy. It comes in a nice carrying zippered case. The only thing i would change, would be to make the cables retractable to reduce clutter.

D-Link Pocket Router

Strengths: Small size; could be used as either a router, an access point or a bridge; up to 54g; backward compatible with 802.11b

Weakness: not 108 or 125 mbps; coverage not large enough if too far from source

It is the best small size pocket router/access point/bridge on the market. You could connect any device with ethernet port wirelessly usind this D-Link pocket router set as a bridge. It could be powered from either a usb port or an AC outlet. I used it to turn a printer server,a web server camera and a Linksys PAP2 VOIP phone adapter into wireless devices. Highly recommended!

Pocket Router!

Strengths: Small footprint. Can be used as a router or access point or client mode

Weakness: none

I purchased this product for me to use while I stay in hotels. Overall it is a great travel router. It can also be used as a wireless access point or in client mode. The option to power the router from a USB port is great and saves time looking for a wll socket. Overall great router for the price I paid of $20.00

D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Router/AP

Strengths: Good design and thought just can't configure

Weakness: Poor support

Purchased 2 for use in my hotel. Couldn't get either to configure. My SMC adapters set up in 2 minutes. I tried 3 different computers and 2 different adapters. Then I let a guest from GE who sets up net works try to configure. He couldn't get it to work either. I'm taking them back tomorrow. Tried calling support. Got cut off after holding for 40 minutes.

Compact, full-of features, and works great!!

Strengths: Most compact travel router, can be powered via USB, easy setup

Weakness: none

This product is the top of its class for a reason. The accesories (USB power cable, flat ethernet cable) are well thought-out, not just generic stuff thrown in. Everything is included in a nice case so this product looks professional when you pull it out to use. The "getting started" guide is easy to understand, and the CD with software and setup information is also simple, for those that aren't computer techs by occupation, but still want something that has lots of features.

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router/AP w/Client Mode,...

It's small (including the case), easy to pack and simple to setup. It also allows you to use it as a wireless extender and even a Wireless NIC. Plus it can be powered from a USB port on your computer. I recommend it

Nice and compact and does the job.

Strengths: Extremely smal, good speed. Nice travel case.

Weakness: None so far

This is a great little travel access point. I used it with my laptop no problems. Set up was relatively easy and pain free. I like the fact that you can switch the mode from AP to Router to Client. The travel case makes it a little larger for travel than it really is, but it keeps all the pieces together and handy. Overall it is a good product for the price.

Portable, versatile, and powerful

Strengths: Works as an Access Point, WiFi Rtr (NAT), or as a WiFi client. Mode selectable using physical switch. Compact and durable. Includes AC and USB power cords. Carrying case for device and all cables.

Weakness: Seems like it might have slightly less range than a router with an external antenna, but it's never been an issue.

I bought on of these for business use years ago and I'm going to buy one for home, now.

I've found the Access Point useful on many occasions when I need to share a single wired connection with one or more WiFi clients (or don't want to have to sit near the wired connection at the hotel room desk with my laptop). On other occasions, I've used the WiFi router when I wanted multiple addresses (for phone and laptop) when the wired connection only allowed one. I've used the client mode for VoIP phones (crummy network, but it worked) and other devices that were happier with a wired connection.

It locked up on my once in client mode, when I had it buried under some other papers and stuff on my desk. It seems like it got hot after several days of constant use. But, that was only once and it hasn't given me any other issues.

Seems like the best price point for a WiFi to Wired client functionality, as well.

DOA

Strengths: None

Weakness: DOA - Dead on Arrival

Well, I've read the reviews on the DWL-G730AP, and really liked it's features, but the apparent QC problems seem endemic with this D-Link product. But, I took a chance because its design and features were exactly what I needed. It's really a very well conceived product, but evidently its manufacturing and QC checks fall short of the mark. Mine's DOA, and now I have to first contact D-Link regarding the warranty, before Provantage will exchange this DOA unit for another hopefully good one. Perhaps I should have listened to what others said, and bought another brand, regardless of the superior features of this item.

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router

Strengths: 54G; Could be set to either a router, access point or bridge; small size; usb powering option; simple set up; comes with nice zipper case

Weakness: None

Get this D-Link wireless pocket router instead of a standard wireless usb card since this unit offers more features with three different use modes, as a router, an access point or a bridge. In bridge mode, you can add wireless connection to a web server camera (D-link DCS-900), a VOIP module (Linksys PAP2), a printer server, a network A/V receiver/player (Kenwood VRS-N8100) and any device with an ethernet port incuding a PC. Yes, you could do all of these wonders with the pocket size D-Link wireless pocket router with the additional option to power it through a usb port instead of the AC/DC adapter.

Small and delivers!

Strengths: Very portable, ideal for travel, works with 110/220V, supports WPA

Weakness: None

OK, I took this little router with me for a few weeks-long trip abroad. It served me better than I expected. I have only used it in the router mode, but you can also use it as an access point or client modes. The wired ADSL connection was on the 2nd floor and the WiFi coverage on that floor was excellent to very good. Quite frankly, I didn't expect to get any signal in the 1st floor, but, alas, there was signal there (ranging from poor to very good!) I like the fact that the small AC adapter it comes with is universal (110/220 volts), which is excellent for international travelers. Also, it can be powered off a USB port (comes with the USB power cable.) And to top it all, it comes with a good looking travel case (6 x 4.5 x 2 inches approx.) where you can carry the router itself (which is VERY small, you'll be surprised!), the AC adapter and the USB and ethernet cables. Keep in mind that you have to first establish a wireless connection from your PC to the router in order to configure it while working in, you guessed it, router mode. All in all, I am very happy with this product.

Wireless Utility

Strengths: Compact package All the tools you need in one package

Weakness: Poor manual Poor product support

Overall, this is a decent product and a good overall package. The manual really needs to be improved, as does vendor support. The technical support reps who I worked with at D-Link were not the friendliest, and not very helpful. I had to make the product work myself, and I really enjoyed it once I got it working

Small, convenient

Strengths: Small size; different modes(router, client, etc.)

Weakness: NA

This pocket router is very small. And it comes with a small adapter and a padded pouch. It can also be USB-powered. It can work as a wireless router, and can also as a usb adapter to connect to a wireless network. Very convenient.

This item works like a charm. Worth the money!

Strengths: compact, portable and convenient

Weakness: Not so far

I used this for a recent trip. The hotel I stayed only has wired internet. I was able to hook this router up and surfed the internet anywhere in the room. I didn't test the diameter for the signal, but no problem for the whole room. I will recommend this to anyone who has the similar needs.

Nice all rounder: works well

Strengths: small, compact, well designed, easy setup, usb powered

Weakness: documentation, cord.

Very easy to setup and use. comactness makes it easy to carry around. Brought it to use at work to get wireless and it has worked well. It function as router, access point and client. Which are very handy.

Carrying case came with the product which is quite useful and well thought. Better documentation could have been very useful.

excellent product!

Strengths: versatile, functional and TINY!

Weakness: weak documentation, support

This product will work as a wireless router (connect directly to broadband modem), an wireless AP (connect to a router) or as a client (connect to a PC to serve as a wireless network adapter). This versatility makes it worth every penny. It even worked right out of the box in the router mode. However, it was tricky getting it to function as a client, and the documentation was too poor to be of help. After the bottom line is that it works as advertised, if you have the time to figure it out.

D-Link Wireless Pocket router DWLG730AP

Strengths: Compact, easy to configure, multi-mode + 802.11b and g

Weakness: Won't function as bridge like Asus; could be cheaper; fixed management address (192.168.0.30)

A nice contrast to the usual boxy designs from D-Link, this sleek little number (about 3/8" 2 1/2 x 3 inches) comes in a nice carry case with a slim ethernet cable, power supply (110-240V) and a cable that allows it to be powered from a USB port.

It works as advertised - as a access point, router, or client. This last mode was an unexpected plus: I purchased it with the intent of using it as an router/access point in hotel rooms, but with the client mode I can also use it as a wireless with the LAN port, instead of a PCMCIA wireless card.

Configuration was straightforward except for the need to wire-in its subnet for initial configuration.

Strengths: Small & Easy carry. Good for travel

My reason for buying this was to use it interchangably between my xbox & my media center PC. It works like a charm. D-link DWL 730AP is the best product out there and at this price its a steal. 5 minute setup and it works like a charm. Much cheaper then those xbox gaming adapter which are twice the price and half as useful. Bottom line if you are looking for AP this model is a must buy!!!
