Posted Nov 10, 2001 - This wireless router has been nothing but a pleasure to own. I replaced two boxes with this one combination unit and it works great. I've also owned the Linksys equivalent and this is much better as the Linksys periodically 'pauses' in wireless mode for ~30 secs at a time - even with the latest firmware etc. Great value, great features, easy to setup. What more could you want? Well, actually, a detachable antenna would be good ... so I can extend the range even further :-).

Posted Apr 18, 2002 - I held off writing a review until I had my wireless card so I could test all aspects of this product. In short, this has every feature I wanted, and was easy to work with!!! I did not encounter the connectivity problems that others have experienced. I believe there was a bad run of chips that were suffering from an overheating problem. That's why wireless connectivity died after a while. As I write this, my wireless connection has been going good for more than an hour now. The only time I've dropped signal was when I stepped out of the house to test the range of the signal. That makes more than 100 feet and 3 walls before I lost the signal (I'm using DLink's DWL-650H wireless card. Look for the H for "high power"). Even at the outer edge of the signal, my Internet connection was much better than 56kbps. This product was a snap to set up with the cable modem. Basically connected it, and it found everything just fine. There is MAC address control so the casual person can't just attach to your network. You can specify packet filtering; you can do DHCP or fixed addressing; it has a print server; it even has a serial connection for command line configuration or a backup dial-up Internet connection. What other features could you want? This one does it all, and it's easy to use too.

Posted May 9, 2002 - After spending a long time reading reviews from various sites including this site, amazon and practicallynetworked.com, my choice came down to DI-713P and SMC 7004AWBR. Although the SMC unit received much higher ratings from users, I chose the D-link because the two antennas in the back are detachable and can be replaced with an external antenna. I read about potential distance problems especially if the unit is located in the basement where my desk top connects to the DSL line and I wanted to use my notebook computer in the master bedroom which is located two floors up from the basement and on the opposite corner from where the D-link unit is located. Because I was paranoid about the distance problem, I also got the Orinoco card because it can also connect to an external antenna. The hardware set up took about 10 minutes and the software set up took another 10 minutes or so. It was very easy to set up with my DSL provider, Verizon. The orinoco card installed itself under Windows XP home edition, although I updated the driver from D-link once the card was up and running. It had no problem talking to the D-link unit. Overall, I am very happy with the set up. My worries about the distance proved to be unfounded. Right from the start, my notebook connected right away from the master bedroom. In the status screen, I get two or three bars out of five and it connects at 11 Mb/s. If you have a big house, get the same setup I have. Otherwise, get the SMC7004AWBR.

Posted Apr 6, 2002 - So far, I'm satisfied. Wired and wireless speed is extremely sufficient and so far I haven't had the lockup problems others have had. I will update this entry if I experience any problems. Print server function works fine with Linux even though it isn't documented. Just point the printer to ldp://192.168.0.1/lp in the printer setup (using CUPS.)

Posted Oct 17, 2001 - Plug it in and it worked. Latest firmware upgrade adds mac address authentication virtually locking out users who bother to decode SSID and encryption key. Throughput good enough to keep up with my cable connection.. no lockups.

Posted May 21, 2002 - I am a technology product testing enginner, and formally tested this unit. While it doesn't quite make the grade for the corporate market, it performs quite well in the home-based environment. I have personally owned it for a month, installed on XP clients (wired Compaq desktop and wireless IBM Thinkpad 600E) with acceptable results, and would recommend it.

Posted Oct 14, 2002 - I purchased my DI-713p near the beginning ($200+) and combined with an ORiNOCO PCMCIA for the notebook and D-Link's DWL-120 USB clients for the kid's computers. The Print Server was abandoned after adding my HP OfficeJet K80 because it lacks bi-directional control needed by most all-in-one devices like this (and supplied software). Previously, the Print Server would frequently get hung, needing power resets and computer reboots, using an Epson Stylus 850 printer, so it did not do that well. As a wired and wireless router it is pretty decent. Still, there is an occasional network hic-cup that renders the LAN disconnected. Hangups require a power cycle of the router and a reboot or re-connection of other wireless hardware to get it talking again. This problem is more likely to occur during large data transfers between machines combined with Broadband Internet access (a loading problem?). Overall, the networking is pretty robust between wired and wireless clients and the shared WAN. It is too bad, D-Link seems to abandon firmware fixes once a product is superceded by an improved model in their product line, because I believe a lot of the quirks and ills many have experienced could be resolved with better support from the vendor. Only one firmware revision was released early on for this device!

Posted Dec 25, 2001 - This product has just about all the features you need for the home networking: router (w/DHCP), wireless gateway, firewall, and printer server. With the price I paid ($169 after a $50 rebate), I was pretty happy - until the firmware incident which halted the unit. I tried to use a Cisco PCMCIA wireless LAN from a laptop. However it caused the router to reboot about every minute until it crashed the firmware. Eventually I have to send the unit back to D-Link and fortunately I got it back in a couple of weeks. Overall, DI-713P is a good product, but D-Link got to work on a better fail safe firmware.

This was after 3 weeks of talking to their service department and getting the run around. I finally had to get mad to get any resolution. Should have just returned it in the first place. I am trying to find a functional replacement.

Posted Apr 17, 2002 - MY RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT BUY DI-713P (new model), spend a few more bucks for an alternate (vendor)! I purchased the new, sleek, silver-polished, version. It was a complete disappointment. The wireless connectivity did not work. I trobleshot thoroughly before calling the D-Link support. After a painful discourse, I was escalated to 2nd-Level (BTW, 1st-level is 3rd party provider), who also assessed the unit as malfunctioning. I returned the first piece for a replacement, attributing the problem to random chance. The wireless access in the replacement worked for a few hours, before dying out. I believe they are using very unreliable chips for wireless functionality, perhaps from a cheap source. DO NOT BUY IT.

Posted May 4, 2002 - Hi, I have owned my 713-P for 48 hours now, and it has worked for two of them. Setting up and configuration of my hardwired LAN was no poblem. I'm still waiting for my telco to connect me to DSL, so I plugged in mu 56K modem for the time being. Modem operation was temperamental. Since my ISP requires I define proxy server settings in IE5, it made switching from Internet and local IP addresses (for setting up the 713P) a pain - if when told not to use proxy for local addresses! Anyway, once the modem was operational I was at least able to get a connection. The problems began however when I tried to configure it to work with my Cisco Aironet 350 PCMCIA card. I had wanted to buy ALL D-Link equipment, DSL-Modem, Router, Wireless PCMCIA, but they don't have the necessary drivers for Windows CE (Jornada 720). Cisco do. Starting up the Cisco often caused the 713P to freeze. Now I have both M1 and M2 lights on which suggests I must return it to D-Link for servicing! I cannot ping the the unit now either. Yes, it is a dead plastic box!! I am very disappointed about all of this. It is now the weekend so I must wait till Monday to call - I have called D-Link tech support before and found them to be quick and helpful (I am in Australia though!). I keep hearing bad stories of US tech support, so you might be better off calling to Australia! I guess the bottom line is that this technology appears to be fairly new, and is still suffering from big problems.

Posted May 22, 2002 - D-Link tech support is terrible! My print server worked well for five months, but in the last month it no longer allows me to print more than one page at a time and frequently and consistently drops wireless connections. The environment has not changed and I am pretty sure the unit has just crashed, but the D-Link tech support folks won't help because they stated that this product does not support any HP printer in the 800 series and if your computer is using an ATI video driver they again will not support any of the functionality of their product, even though "it appears that the unit is malfunctioning". I used to recommend their equipment, but after four phone calls to their tech support line, I will never buy another D-Link product again.

There is some kind of Firmware issue and there latest versions make the problems worse, they had me step back four versions for firmware and still broken. Second unit in Two months and its broken again, Tech support is great but there products Suck !

Posted Oct 16, 2001 - Excited about the great functionality and low price, I purchased the DI-713P, fired it up over Ethernet, upgraded the firmware, and had it working perfectly with my DSL modem within minutes as a WIRED router. When I turned on my Windows 2000 laptop (with an 802.11.b wireless card inserted) the wireless router worked perfectly. But then it seized up after several minutes and could not be reset-- not even by unplugging it! D-link tech support (very hard to get hold of) confirmed that the box was dead (because the M1 & M2 LEDs were on solid). They told me to get a replacement from the retailer, which I did. But the new one failed the same way! After the second one failed, D-link tech support admitted a design flaw. Both the DI-713P & SMC 7004AWBR use the same networking chipset (& core firmware) from AMIT. I have personally seen the exact same failure on both. The user reviews on PracticallyNetworked.com are littered with similar complaints of units dying. These two routers offer such a great feature set for such a low price that everybody is hopeful that they'll release firmware that will fix the problem, but several firmware updates later, and they still have this fatal flaw. So I'm going to get the Netgear MR314 which lacks a print server and is a bit more expensive, but actually works! I'm an electrical engineer. My two wireless laptops work perfectly at the office and with my Orinoco RG1000, so the fault definitely lies with D-link (or actually AMIT) on this.
