Strengths:Impossible to determine
Weaknesses:Abysmal throughput
Posted Apr 13, 2003 - I took delivery of the following D-Link products a week ago:
- DI-614+ wireless router
- DFE-530TX+ Wake-On-LAN NIC
- DWL-520 wireless Wi-Fi adapter
I installed them yesterday. Today I boxed them up and am sending them back. The reviews on this site that refer to the Tech help at D-Link as useless are actually understating the matter. The story is so sad after six hours of both being on hold and talking to (a euphemism at best) tech support that I can't begin to describe it.
I have two Win98 SE2 systems, w/ a Comcast cable connection to one and a dial-up connection to another, one floor away. I set up the router at the box with the cable connection, starting with installation of the DFE-530TX+ NIC. After two failed attempts by foreign-language-speaking techies who also had hearing problems, the NIC would not install, so I re-installed my old NIC.
The router installed but throughput was in the 300-400 byte range (that's right, bytes, not kilobytes). Again another phone call to another tech person to whom English was a second language. Although Netscape is my browser of choice, the techie knew nothing about it and insisted I set all configurations and check all connections using Explorer. That was infuriating, but what the hey.
Finally, I installed the DWL-520+ wireless card in the remote system. Signal strength was great, 84-85%, but link strength was only 3%. Zero throughput. Another phone call. After waiting for 3/4 hour on hold, I gave up. Good-bye D-Link.
