D-Link, the industry pioneer in wireless networking, introduces another performance breakthrough in wireless connectivity ? the D-Link AirPlusTM series of high-speed net working products capable of data transfer rates up to 22 Mbps. And with the AirPlus DI-614+, D-Link once again sets a high standard for wireless broadband routers. The AirPlus DI-614+ combines the latest advancements in 802.11b silicon chip design from Texas Instruments, utilizing their patented Digital Signal ProcessingTM technology, and D-Link's own robust firewall security features. The DI-614+ is ideal for those creating their first wireless network, as well as for more advanced users looking for additional management settings and policy-based content filtering. Filters can be set based on MAC address, IP address, URL and/or Domain Name. minimize

Strengths:

Easy setup, switch router and wireless access combo, works great with my DSL

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Feb 13, 2003 - This product was very easy to setup, I ordered it online and when it arived I just read the little intruction book that came with it and did it step by step. I have two computers through a wired network and have one wireless laptop and one wireless palm pilot. I have yet to try the palm pilot but the two computers on the wired network and the wireless laptop work great. It took me about 30 min to setup the network and so far no problems.

Strengths:

256 bit WEP, MAC filtering, Great Range

Weaknesses:

Posted Dec 13, 2002 - This is the second WAP that I have owned (my previous one was a netgear). I am very impressed with this WAP. It has the ability to do URL and Domain filtering, in addition... Contrary to previous reviews, you CAN limit association by filtering MAC addresses. This WAP also allows you to disable SSID broadcasting. I would HIGHLY recommend this product.

Strengths:

Price, Features.

Weaknesses:

Expect no support from Dlink, unless your lucky.

Posted Dec 11, 2002 - My office is downstairs, I've been through a half dozen cordless phones trying to find one I can get upstairs without drop-outs etc. I was leary that any 802.11 product would work in my particular situation. I un-hooked my Linksys 4 port cable modem router and hooked the DLink up. I ran the wizard. I think the interface is a jumble of mess, unclear, terrible manual. I went to manual setup and started from scratch putting in my settngs (no DHCP). I have static settings from my broadband provider. After a few resets, something happened right - my IBM Laptop chirped at me, it has built in Wi-Fi it was connected. Without any WEP Keys installed yet I trucked the IBM upstairs, and had in my opinion great reception all over the house. (I was in disbelief) this product worked. 100% link quality - according to the IBM utility even out on the deck. I installed the WEP Keys (64bit) IBM max's out at 128. Then I went to the filter area's to only allow MAC Address's to be accepted on the network that I put in. Every Network Card - Wireless card is assigned a unique address. I put in the Main PC's Mac Address first - if you don't do this the main PC you use to interface the Dlink Admin Panal from will cease to work, you'll have to go for a full reset. Once I put the main PC MAC in, I hit reset, the IBM squaked it lost wireless connection. My other PC's also dropped I had hooked up with CAT5. So apparently the MAC filtering does effect both LAN-WAN and Wireless. (Great Secuirty Feature).

Strengths:

Is capable of connecting computers for file sharing in a house of few walls, and no cordless phones.

Weaknesses:

Does not work with a dial up internet service. Tech support knows very little about the product.

Posted Dec 8, 2002 - After 3 days of almost constant work and 4 calls to tech support, I was finally told that this device can't share an internet connection from a dial up service. One of the support people hung up on me when he realized that he didn't know what to do. I did my homework and even called for pre-sales information before I bought the unit. No one there seems to know that it doesn't work with a dial up internet service except one person. After 3 totally frustrating days, I hope that I can return this garbage for a refund.

Strengths:

Quick setup with the shape of an "L" on it's forehead. Makes a nice wireless coaster.

Weaknesses:

File transfer and email account problems. If I run my CAT5 cable directly between my ethernet card and my DSL modem, eliminating the D-Link 614+, everything works perfectly.

Posted Dec 5, 2002 - I feel that I have been sold a bill of goods here. I have patiently submitted tech support request after tech support request to resolve my file transfer and password protected account disfunction, but to no avail. If I run my CAT5 cable directly between my ethernet card and my DSL modem, eliminating the D-Link 614+, everything works perfectly. In my effort to plod along and work with D-Link, trying everything that they suggested, I have unknowingly allowed my 30 day refund or exchange period to expire with the on line store that I purchased it from. Now I have a worthless piece of garbage in exchange for my hard earned money. How cool is that? My advice is, if the d*** thing does not work with all of your internet activity in a seamless fashion, ship it back immediately. Do not take the "Maybe it's me." position. Trust me, it is NOT you. D-Link has obviously mistaken their customer base for their Quality Assurance Department, having stuck me with a real lemon. Avoid this very premature product. A better wireless network can be achieved using the SneakerNet method. Walk a Zip disk back and forth between computers.

Strengths:

Configuration is very easy using the Wizard. I setup encryption to 128 along with a different channel and in just a few minutes was up and running.

Weaknesses:

Insufficient detailed help either on the CD.

Posted Nov 9, 2002 - Installation is a snap. Despite the thickness of walls in my building, range is very impressive, out to about 300 ft and connection is constant through out the day. Manuel could be much better explaining the many options. I especially like the ability to hide the SSID broadcast. I use it also with an AirPlus PCI Nic and indeed, speed is a little bit faster vs the standard 11MPS

Posted Oct 19, 2002 - After purchasing the router, I needed help setting it up and configuring. I called the Tech Support department and got right through! I spoke with a well informed individual who had my entire network installed and configured in less than twenty minutes. Everything works great, I love my D-Link products and would not hesitate to purchase again!

Strengths:

Wireless, Advanced Router features, Acceptable wireless range, updates are frequent.

Weaknesses:

I haven't encountered any yet.

Posted Oct 16, 2002 - I have had this for about 2 weeks, but it has been plenty of time to play with some of it's features and test the everyday use for about a week or so. I have had acceptable performance as far as range within my home goes, although some spots in my home aren't able to get good enough signals. They are little spots though and I am betting things like my refrigerator, microwave, etc are getting in the way, but I can't be certain. I am also pretty impressed with the features that are accessable with this product via it's web based administration. Things like the advanced security, scheduled times when PCs can access the internet, trigger ports, etc. are all things that I was impressed with. I haven't used them all, but the features I did implement have worked great. The setup was also very easy to do. It basically works out of the box and all you have to do is configure it to communicate with your service provider.

Strengths:

Higher speed network connection, apparent longer range opperation (compared with other DLINK DI-713P -- returned) products.

Weaknesses:

Seems to reboot itself periodically dropping the wireless netwrok link and DSL conection. Unexperienced technical support

Posted Oct 11, 2002 - I have been trying to get my DI-614+ acess point to work reliably with a DLINK DWL-650+ PCMCIA card and several PC's connected via ethernet. The router periodically seems to reset itself. When this happens, the wireless link drops. The DSL connection is broken and usually takes several minuted to re-establish itself (seem much longer when the system dies while you are sitting there browsing). Unfortunately, when the router dies, it clears the internal log and resets the time so troubleshooting it myself has been impossible. I have called technical support on several occasions. They suggested that I upgrade to the latest firmware (I have done this several times with the same version 2.03). Tech support lacked any technical depth. Every time I have called them (after my 20 minute hold), I am told the same things that I have already tried followed by, well I don't know and a cute email that tells me they have solved my problem. I am going to buy a Linksys BEFW11S4 and try my luck with it.

Strengths:

256-bit WEP, "Parental Controls", Easy setup, Good Wireless Range

Weaknesses:

Posted Oct 10, 2002 - This router/access point has been a blessing. I was able to set this up with my DSL connection within about 10 minutes. I had to get everything plugged in, and just to make sure everything was up to date I upgraded the firmware before configuring the router. Upgrading the router is as easy as downloading a file and then within the web based manager in this router you just point to the newly downloaded file and press update. It took about 30 seconds to upgrade itself, but after it's done it was time to set it up. All setup consisted of was running the setup wizard and choosing your own settings. Not leaving the default settings is a good step towards keeping your network safe. I have been using this for about a month now and it hasn't rebooted on me (as far as I can tell) or anything bad. My DSL is stable speeds, my games work and I am happy.

Strengths:

Decent aesthics.

Weaknesses:

Obtaining a secure configuration, WAN speed w/ Optimum online Cable Service, Support

Posted Oct 8, 2002 - Stay far away from this modem if your cable provider is Optimum online, for no apparent reason when your cable modem is connected to this router your WAN speeds depreciate to the bytes per sec range. Tech support is also a joke w/ D-Link, prepare to be on hold for atleast 50 mins before receiving 'Bull Sh*t' help from there highschool support team. Take a look at this web.njit.edu/~ggf0482/... for an example.

Strengths:

22Mbps 256-bit WEP

Weaknesses:

NO Association Control!

Posted Oct 2, 2002 - Many of you bought this wireless router for the MAC Address control capability and falsely thinking that your LAN will be safe from the intruders. Now think again! For the WIRELESS part, this router only supports CONNECTION CONTROL to the internet, NOT the ASSOCIATION CONTROL which basically means although you stopped the unauthorized user from being able to access the INTERNET using wireless( your neighbor stealing your bandwidth ), BUT it will still allow connection to your INTERNAL LAN ( your neighbor poking your Microsoft network )! Before a wireless client can access your LAN or WAN through your router/AP, it needs to be associated with your AP. Their older DI-713P has the ability to reject the Association based on the MAC Address Allow/Deny list. (Heck, even my other unstable Compaq CP-2W can do this!) Without this capability basically anyone can associate to your AP! Hence compromising your internal LAN's security. Most mid-range wireless routers on the market will allow you to SEPERATELY control wireless portion and LAN portion of MAC addresses. This one combined them together. This is a bad thing! In most case, wired LAN is 99% safe from outsider. So putting all the computers on the MAC list will be a hassle, especially if you have VIRTUAL SERVERS which are not using DHCP. (You can¡¦t see them on the DI-614+ web interface, you have to either use ipconfig to figure the MAC out or check the MAC label on the card! )

Strengths:

Nominal 22 Mbps speed, 256-bit WEP, 4 Hard-Wired Ports, Psuedo-DMZ, Ability to direct incoming traffic to a specific system by port

Weaknesses:

ROTTEN TECH SUPPORT, cryptic manual, can't limit access to wireless LAN by MAC address. Be careful of new firmware!

Posted Sep 13, 2002 - I use my D-Link 614+ with a D-Link 650+ NIC and set up my network a half hour (mostly spent experimenting with generating keys for 256-bit WEP encryption.) Reception is good anywhere in our three story house and in the small yard. No complaints about speed. The browser-based interface was easy to access and use adequately organized. DSL side set-up was easy with well-labelled boxes for all normal data. The home LAN side was also easy to set up. The DHCP server was straight forward, so was disabling it (for security.) How to use the security settings was very sparsely documented. The Help in the firmware, the manual on the CD, and the D-Link web site contain NO information about writing rules for the firewall. I wanted to restrict wireless access to only the MAC address of my 650+. This precaution is recommended by wireless security web sites, but isn't possible on the 614+. E-mail to D-Link Tech Support took them two days to answer. The answer short with bizarre grammar. Upgrading firmware from the D-Link Web site deleted the WEP key generation feature without warning. The DMZ feature isn't a real DMZ. There is no firewall filtering to protect the DMZ system from the Internet, although the rest of your network is protected from the DMZ system as if it were any other internet system.

Strengths:

Easy to Install Easy to Use Fast Wireless Speeds Very robust in Features Detachable Antenna Looks Cool

Weaknesses:

None

Posted Sep 11, 2002 - This router was real easy to install, and configure correctly. I even upgraded the firmware quickly and easily. I like the fact that it has detachable antenna because I can later boost my range by adding a bigger antenna. (when I get the money) The wireless speeds are double that of the normal 802.11b/11Mbps networks and cost less than the 802.11a hardware. I haven't actually tried any other 802.11b networks, but after this experience I don't think I need to. The D-Link network I have now has faster speeds, easy to configure, and is ready for the future.

Strengths:

Ease of installation and configuration

Weaknesses:

Rear antennas are flimsy and subject to damage easily.

Posted Jul 27, 2002 - The product is very easy to configure and worked as advertised. Its capability in supporting both DSL and cable modem was part of its rich features. Overall system design was not bad because it includes extended LAN support using another AP which is helpful in establishing separate LAN in different rooms of the same building. I did not notice any significant degradation of speed when connecting to a AP 900+ from various distance at up to 50 feet.
