D-Link, the industry pioneer in wireless networking, introduces another performance breakthrough in wireless connectivity ? the D-Link AirPlusTM series of high-speed net working products capable of data transfer rates up to 22 Mbps. And with the AirPlus DI-614+, D-Link once again sets a high standard for wireless broadband routers. The AirPlus DI-614+ combines the latest advancements in 802.11b silicon chip design from Texas Instruments, utilizing their patented Digital Signal ProcessingTM technology, and D-Link's own robust firewall security features. The DI-614+ is ideal for those creating their first wireless network, as well as for more advanced users looking for additional management settings and policy-based content filtering. Filters can be set based on MAC address, IP address, URL and/or Domain Name. minimize

Strengths:

Strong Connection and Good Range. 256-bit WEP. Easy to Use.

Weaknesses:

N/A

Posted Sep 11, 2003 - I like this router because of how easy it is to use. It also does an excellent job of keeping a solid connection with our flaky ISP. Plus the Wireless portion of this router works wonders. My mom uses her laptop like it is going out of style and I set her up with a wireless card and this router and she can't get over how fun a laptop is when it isn't tethered for internet access.

4 Star ReviewBought w/ a HP ZE4365 laptop w/ integrated 802.11b ...

Strengths:

MAC filtering- WLAN and LAN side; good firewall options;

Weaknesses:

lousy manual/CD

Posted Jun 11, 2003 - Bought w/ a HP ZE4365 laptop w/ integrated 802.11b. Set right up, no problems. I was online at full speed (w/ an older DLINK cable modem to my ISP) in 30 min with all machines right out of the box. I noticed after installing Zone Alarm on the laptop that I could not access the internet after 10min or so, both wired and WLAN sides. Thought it was the router's DHCP. Not. If I reset the laptop I was ok. Turns out it was Zone Alarm, not the DLINK. All of you who have had access problems with the 614+, make sure you enter the router's IP (default 192.168.0.1) in the 'trusted zone' on the PC firewall software, otherwise it blocks your connection and you can't even get to the router page on your LAN. That explains why if you bypass the router and connect the PC right to the modem you are ok. Also, turn down the Tx power from 17 to 12 or 15 dBm- you may get better reception, especially indoors with walls and steel beams (reduces multipath strength).

Strengths:

Ease of use.

Weaknesses:

Have to "tune" for best reception.

Posted May 23, 2003 - After purchasing this item I was greatly pleased to find that it immediately saw my laptop and coupled this with the other pc's on the router side. As I used the 614+ more and more, I discovered that setting the internal encryption and filters was of tremendous benefit. My signal strength was greater and was more consistent. I notice that you can also use VPN with this but I don't seem to have need for it right now. I recommend that anyone buying this router use the software help menu and set the security levels rather high. I certainly got better results in my house. Don't use the default settings!!

Strengths:

Ease of setup, good rebate when I bought

Weaknesses:

Lack of tech support, no access to routing rules, horrible firmware updates

Posted Feb 21, 2004 - 02/04 ***** It has died!! Yeah! I am waiting on Buffalo's new 125mbps router. EEEEeek! I thought this was a great product. It worked pretty good and then.... I downloaded a new firmware and it crashed the router. It took 2 days to fix. Tech support, better make that tech unsupport. Definitely a HUGE language problem. Finally I have resorted to using email to try and get some small amount of support. Consider the following snippets of email.... Beg. email--- I got this as an answer but it is not correct. I know what NAT is and that's not what caused the dropped packets. The bottom line for me is I want to set up my own rules. If this product doesn't allow that, which product does? I'd hate to have to get a Cisco for my house! Thanks. Also make sure for the VPN if you have to open any ports for example PPTP or IPSEC or any other ports for authenticating with the vpn. Strengths:

The D-Link 614+ is a good product. It provides we with good reception through my 3 story house.

Weaknesses:

Customer Service is terrible.

Posted Apr 6, 2003 - The D-Link 614+ is a good quality router. I have decent reception throughout the house. It did take me a few days to set it up. I called customer service serveral times to aid in the setup process. They were useless and uninformed. The usual answer I would get was to reset the router, make sure all the wires are connected, and the router is defective. My average conversation with them would lasted 45 minutes, with the majority of the time being on hold. The worse part of my dealings w/ customer service was this lady that made the comment that she is wasting her time helping people set up routers. Realizing the customer service was of no use, I decided to set it up on my own. After serveral trail and error experiments, I got it started. I am happy w/ the router, but very disappointed w/ the customer service. It's the worse customer service department I ever dealt with. My feeling of the customer servcie department is consistent w/ other review of the 614+.

Thank you for the valuable feedback!

Strengths:

Don't know. I don't have it working since I purchased it three weeks ago.

Weaknesses:

Tech support very poor. When they could not figure how to get it working they told me to send it back. Very poor service!!!

Posted Sep 19, 2003 - From researching D-Link they are considered a fine company and product. They just need to hire some Knowledgable Tech support technicans and get rid of the dead wood. As at present I am using this router for a paper weight.

Weaknesses:

very poor wireless range.

Posted Mar 15, 2004 - I have had very poor wireless reception unless the recieving computer was in the same room. Read some review and bought the extended range antenna, $30+, that didn't help. Bought the dlink dwl-800ap+ wireless repeater for $80. Wireless performance still sucks. Dlink web site and telephone support are very poor. Instructions on setting up the wireless repeater are very poor. I suggest you buy a Linksys or Netgear wireless unit. I can pick up a Netgear wireless network across the street and down 2 houses better than I can in my own house.

Strengths:

Weaknesses:

Posted Dec 6, 2003 - This router is pretty good for the price. But, I would still prefer a linksys router anyday. This router had no problems for me except that it sometimes would drop packets spontaneously. All in all, a good router for the price. If you've got some extra cash, spend it on a Linksys.

Strengths:

strong signal, good looks, fairly easy setup.

Weaknesses:

their tech support sucks, I called on three different occasions and ended up getting it fixed by myself and long hours of troubleshooting. They seemed to wanna just get to the next call.....

Posted Nov 15, 2003 - After last night I am really amazed with this router. My friends girlfriend is in the same apt complex and she has been dealing with dial up for a long time. He suggested we try one of my D-link wireless cards (DL 520+) down the other side of the apts at his girlfriends apt. I set the card up in his new computer I built thinking it was a waste of time. Boy was I wrong!!! this puppy has some range!!! And now I have probably talked them out of paying for dial-up and getting their internet thru me!!!! I might be able to do my whole apt complex!!! kirby @kirbyflys2@hotmail.com

Strengths:

Very easy to setup. Accept any kind of CAT5 network cable. 256 WEP security. Very powerful antenna. Stable.

Weaknesses:

None.

Posted Oct 13, 2003 - A very powerful router even with the WEP encryption. It was a choice between a Linksys and a D-Link but I have problems setting up my friend Linksys and the encryption is bad.. 128 max. Signal strength for the Linksys is crap while I am only using 25% of the antenna's power for the D-Link and I am getting clear and stable signal. I could have use a lower setting but my area have alot of 2.4GHz cordless phones, so I boost up the power to compensate. I was a believe in Linksys before but now I just think that all Linksys is crap. My D-Link USB wireless unit could detect my friend's Linksys router, mine and a couple more routers but my friends Linksys USB wireless unit could not even detect my router, or even detect my friend's Linksys router from my place. Looks are decieving.
