D-Link AirPlus DWL-810+ Wireless Access Point

Strengths: Easy to install; works BETTER than advertised!

Weakness: Cosmetics only; ugly design and color

I bought two of these bridges to use with older "legacy" PCs running Win 98 (1st Ed.) that would not support other wireless networking adapters. Not only did the 810+ install and run flawlessly with the Win 98 machines, but it also bailed me out of an unexpected problem with my laptop running Win XP PRO.

For some reason, my Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 exhibited problems with the wireless network (Linksys Wireless Access Point/Router) using either a Linksys Wireless PCMCIA card adapter or a Linksys USB Wireless Adapter.

However, simply enabling the built-in LAN port on the Toshiba and plugging the 810+ into the RJ45 port solved all the problems, and it runs fast and flawlessly on the network.

Thanks, D-Link, for a great, OS-independent wireless product!

D-Link AirPlus DWL-810+ Wireless Access Point

Strengths: Great reception and set up so easy a monkey could do it

Weakness: no signal strength meter

5 Minutes to set up. Doesn't take up a pci slot, Can give an entire group of ethernet devices internet access with a switch. It's way easier to set up than an internal card and

No indicator of signal strength, though this will pick up your wireless router anywhere in almost any house (billionares may need a repeater)

D-Link AirPlus DWL-810+ Wireless Access Point

Strengths: Setup is easy, works great.

Weakness: Large lights made me have to hide it so it doesn't interrupt my TV viewing.

The first time I ran through the setup the ethernet bridge was connected to my computer. I thought that the setup was too easy for me to have done it correctly and I thought I was missing. I decided to try out my settings and connected it to my ReplayTV console. Turned on my console and forced a connection. To my surprise, it worked!! Setup was easy and everything was working the way I wanted it to (128bit WEP enabled, IP address assigned correctly, no hassles).

I was going to put the box on top of my TV, but the orange and green lights are a little large and bright for movies in the dark. I had to place the bridge on my subwoofer behind my entertainment system so the lights won't distract.

Great product and easy setup!

Edit: Had it for a month and it is starting to lock up. I have to unplug it for a minute and then plug it back in to respond. It has done this 4 times since I purchased it. I e-mailed tech support and we will see how they handle it. Updates later.

Edit: Fixed and working.

Why did it lock? What was the fix? Great Review!

Also - can you tell me if the antenna is removeable, and if so, is it an RP-SMA or RP-TNC connection? Thanks again!

I am not sure why it locked up, it would just stop responding and communicating. Tech support did e-mail me back fairly quickly, but I think I already tried what fixed it which was to do a hard reset and clear the flash and then reprogram my settings in again. Yes, the antenna is removable and I believe that it is an RP-SMA connector.

mnemonicj - I'm also trying to find a bridge to connect my ReplayTV to the internet in order to download the program listings, since the internal modem failed. The Netgear WGE111 I bought is doing the same thing; it will work for a day or two, and then freeze up, requiring a reboot (unplug, and then replug), and then works just fine for another day or two. This unreliability defeats the purpose of the ReplayTV. Is your D-Link bridge working fine, or does it continue to freeze up? Thanks!

I don't have replay TV anymore because I moved and never hooked it up again, but it didn't give me anymore problems for the longest time. After I moved I did have a couple problems when trying to change the settings again, but it was over a year after I purchased it. My brother has a Linksys ethernet bridge that he has not had a single problem with since he purchased it. You might want to look at some of the reviews on that.

D-Link AirPlus DWL-810+ Wireless Access Point

Strengths: Easy to Administer, Small package, Good Range, solid connection, and fast enough for gaming.

Weakness: brown color

First off, this bridge was super easy to get set up and working with my XBOX. I just followed the instructions and was done in a few fleeding moments. Although all I could wait for was to play online with my XBOX. After configuring it right all I had to do was plug it into my XBOX with the cable provided and suddenly I could play XBOX online with no lag and play I did. My XBOX is in my room which is on the second floor. Our wireless access point is on the first floor, but I still get a good connection. I am Happy.
The only thing I would change about this is that it comes in a nice boring brown color. So I did just that, and painted it all black to blend in better.
